Myra Melford Trio â Alive in the House of Saints (hatOLOGY)
Pianist Myra Melford, who has spent the better part of three decades pushing jazz into new territories, studied under Henry Threadgill and apprenticed under artists like Don Pullen, so of course just a few minutes into her trio's Alive in the House of Saints performance, she references Vince Guaraldi and Peanuts. The move, surprising as it may seem, hints at the work that Melford, bassist Lindsey Horner, and drummer Reggie Nicholson do throughout the two-disc set (a second reissue of a 1993 recording). The trio moves in bizarre, almost combative ways, but their grounding in tradition makes for a thoroughly remarkable listen.

Even for the well-initiated auditor, the Braxton portfolio can prove a daunting prospect for discovery and catalog. Nearly fifty years of work funneled into a discography that registers well into the triple-digits and covers a multitude of directions and designs. Still, there are plenty of signposts and chapter-breaks to aid attempts at parsing the particulars of his creative pursuits. Braxtonâs performance work of the past several decades has skewed toward ensembles populated primarily by his numerous pupils first at Mills College and later Wesleyan University. Quintet (Basel) 1977 dates from a time when chosen colleagues in such endeavors could often better be described as direct peers and the frequency of recording was far more irregular.

Cecil Taylor exited this plane of existence on April 5th and the internet opened up in the aftermath with widespread reactions to his absence from peers and admirers who hold his extensive body of work in thrall. Matthew Shipp was predictably among that measure and his words posted on Facebook proved particularly candid and considered. Somewhat surprisingly, Shipp copped to harboring something of fraught stance toward Taylorâs music, particularly early in his career when the elder pianistâs shadow proved difficult to distance. As a dynamic improviser working in the same region idiomatically and geographically Shipp was regularly encumbered by comparisons both erroneous and reductive alike. Originally released on the No More label in 1996 and now accorded a fresh CD mastering, Symbol Systems signaled an early attempt to reconcile the perceived relationship while simultaneously pursuing a boldly independent path.
