When Sunny Gets Blue - Jeanne Lee, Ran Blake The Newest Sound AroundÂ
Ran still performs and much prefers to play with all the house lights off. I must say that the dark has a way of galvanizing the ears, and I would love to hear more performers experimenting with this style of delivery. Try listening to this, and maybe even try it with the lights off!
2019 NPR Jazz Critics Poll: One Critic's Take
"Gender equality has been late coming to jazz, and it's not totally here yet. But its arrival is inevitable, if this year's standings tell us anything." "...this year's poll is that its Top 10 is almost certainly the youngest ever." It's rare that music polls or best-of lists give us an insight to where the jazz world is in a particular era. But maybe Francis Davis' years of listening have honed his analytical chops, and his take on the the 7th Annual NPR Jazz Critics Poll is worth a close read, particularly about the non-mainstream recognition of our current crop, the rise of women across the jazz spectrum, and the belated return of youth to the forefront. And, I'd like to highlight two of Davis' personal picks for the year, Jeremy Udden's's new Three in Paris, and the overdue reissue of the Ran Blake/Jeanne Lee duet, The Newest Sound Around. Â Â

Jeanne Lee and Ran Blake â The Newest Sound You Never Heard (A-Side Records)
Whether you do or donât already own a copy of Jeanne Lee and Ran Blakeâs classic duos The Newest Sound Around, youâre in for a treat. Half a decade after that classic vocal/piano release, Lee and Blake recorded two Belgian gigs, one in late 1966 and the other in early 1967. Itâs an absolute joy to have new music from this pair of originals. And there is very little as odd and yet immediately satisfying as the blend of Leeâs lush tone and unpredictable phrasing with Blakeâs arch harmonic sensibility and mischievous arrangements.Â
jeanne leeâs singing is very special, especially in her work with ran blake where the songs always have something of a haunting quality. i love her and thereâs something you can only get from listening to her
