Summary: Sometimes it’s easier to pretend that nothing’s changed. That they’re still the same kids who walked a thousand miles in battered sneakers, fighting bad guys and pretending that saving the world hadn’t caused them pain. Actual Palletshipping devoted to a specific @hashketchum since I really haven’t written the best OTP in a while.

Sometimes Gary will wake up to a strangled gasp in the middle of the night that he has to pretend he never heard. Sometimes, that’s okay, Ash just needs to reach out and wrap his arms around Gary, bury his head in the back of his neck and breathe him in.

Other nights, Ash will climb out of bed, pass him to the balcony, and flick on a light, burn a joint until his hands stop shaking and the glistening tears that Gary can see through half closed eyes in pale moonlight go away. Gary never allows himself to go and comfort him. These moments of vulnerability are Ash’s alone.

When Ash wants him, he will come to Gary, shake him gently until he’s ‘awake’ and offer Gary a half-burned joint to share. (If he feels like sharing at all. Sometimes all he wants is someone to remind him he’s not alone.) Sometimes he just wants Gary to wake up, a tiny bit grumpy and hair mussed so he can kiss him, softly and sweetly until he’s too dazed to be grumpy about it.

In the morning, Ash will bicker with him over breakfast, Gary will have to fight to keep his breakfast from being burned by Ash’s distractions. He won’t deny that he likes the kisses though. That’s definitely nice. It repeats. Every night, without fail.

well i think discourse mutuals can teach you stuff when they’re not... actually lost in discourse if that makes sense. at least im not too far gone and i have never done discourse sideblog and all that stuff, it doesn’t sound healthy and it isn’t worth it. some things don’t really... deserve that effort
