“I have haptephobia. Meeting new people has always been difficult for me because of it. You have to learn to block out your surroundings - which in itself is damaging - and brace yourself in social situation. You kind of go into situation with a negative mentality and never quite recover from the confusion and disbelief on people's faces when you step away from them in panic when they initiate a handshake. And when a person happens to actually touch you, you freeze. And panic. I hate it.”
haptephobic anon here again >n< thank you that really helps a lot. I just don't know what to do with my mom because she touches me in all of my most sensitive places and then when i tell her not to she immediately says it's okay and she can do it because she gave birth to me. i thought maybe if i told her exactly why it bothers me so much maybe she would stop but i guess not. i'm just tired and frustrated with this and i dont even understand why this should be a problem for me
Ren says:
Absolutely understandable, friend. It's a phobia, and phobias aren't things that are easily overcome! I am personally emetophobic and I totally know what it feels like - you can sorta tell that it's probably irrational, but that doesn't mean it feels irrational. For us, the fear is very real, and it's disappointing and crappy that your mom can't respect that.
It may help if you're able to talk to a therapist about it - getting a diagnosis might be good. Not only might your mom be more willing to believe you, but you might also be able to learn new coping techniques and potentially even do exposure therapy.
(Admittedly, I tried exposure therapy and while I scored a few little victories, I just don't think I'm at that stage. So don't feel like you have to...but know that it's an option.)
I told my mom about my haptephobia and she poked my arm and said"I think thats actually called hypochondria" and she laughed at me and told her friend that I was trying to claim a disability bc hes autistic so he gets how it"really feels" I wanna die
Ren says:
I'm so sorry, anon. That's really, really not okay.
You're not alone, okay? We may not have your exact experience, but I'm guessing nearly every follower here, if not all of us, have been invalidated similarly before. We know this isn't all right and we're here to remind you that your phobia is valid and shouldn't be made fun of.
<3
(BTW, for those who are curious, haptephobia is a fear of being touched...which makes the fact that anon's mom poked them even more awful.)
