People often struggle to conceptualize why sharks are important & why they are even worthy of existence. The primary reason why sharks and other apex predators are so important is due to the fact that they balance & protect marine ecosystems via complex predator-prey relationships. This checks and balances system in turn keeps the Oceans happy & healthy, and considering more than 70% of the oxygen humans breathe comes from the Oceans, it’s in our best human-interests to also help keep our sharks & our oceans happy & healthy. Sharks share some of the same behaviors with other aquatic and terrestrial animals, like Tonic immobility (TI). TI is a coma-like state that can be observed when sharks are rolled upside down, which can aid in minimizing a shark’s struggle and restrain during medical and rescue procedures (Henningsen 1994). A study conducted the first ever physiological effects of TI on juvenile Lemon Sharks (Negaprion brevirostris). The blood results showed a stressful experience for the sharks, which disrupted ventilation and heightened anxiety (Brooks et al., 2011). However, the study of TI remains largely open for further research not just for sharks, but for all taxa.
