How to Fade Acne Scarring in 30 Days ā Palmerās Skin Success Anti-Dark Spot Skincare
When it comes to acne, I had a pretty smooth ride as a teenager. I would experience the occasional red spot, slap on some concealer and think little of it. Heading into my twenties, however, came a different story. Painful cystic acne began to appear banded on my cheeks. As soon as one spot would start to settle, a new one would appear. Stress, I realised, was a major source of the problem, so I reigned in my lifestyle to give my skin some breathing space. 12 months since doing so, the painful lumps were now few and far between, but Iād been left with unsightly red marks and small areas of impacted skin where I had attempted to squeeze them in vein.
At this point, Iād succumbed to the belief these post-acne scars were permanent, and that covering them with makeup everyday would be my only solace. As a beauty writer, maintaining a discerning eye for skincare products comes second nature. Despite the countless lotions and potions Iād tried in hopes of fading my red scars, nothing had quite hit the nail on the head. Palmerās Skin Success line, however, was a game changer.
I decided to commit to the brandās four-week trial period, because I knew the longer I gave it, the better my results would be. Each morning and night, I diligently applied their Dark Spot Corrector serum on my face, concentrating on my scars, followed by a small dollop of their Fade Cream. I was certainly impressed by how my foundation would sit on top, undisrupted ā tick! And how despite the strength of the formulasā active ingredients, my sensitive skin experienced no signs of irritation ā BIG tick! By monthās end, I reveled in the undeniable improvement in the colour of my scars. Theyād faded from a stark tomato red to a soft-wash pink. To touch, my skin felt soft and smooth ā not unlike the effects of a lavish facial. This smart duo was one to write home about.
The range is designed to treat other types of skin discolouration too, including sun damage, skin trauma and melasma (common during pregnancy). I spoke to Palmerās Australia Brand & Project Manager, Kimberly James on how it all works. āExcess pigmentation occurs due to an overproduction of melanin which clusters together and appears as dark spots or patches on the surface of the skin,ā James explains. āThe amazing thing about Palmerās Skin Success Anti-Dark Spot range is that it actually works at a cellular level to reduce and prevent hyperpigmentation⦠[acne scarring] is just another form of excess melanin build-up.ā While weāre used to formulas promising to whiten the skin, Skin Success works deeper to target individual melanin levels, producing a brightening effect on dark complexions as well as light. Therefore, the range is suitable for all skin tones and types, as well as adults of all ages.
The productsā effectiveness boils down to their trusted ingredients - āSongyi Mushroom Extract to inhibit the production of melanin deep within the skin, Niacinamide to discourage excess melanin from traveling to the skinās surface, and Retinol to encourage cell turnover and exfoliate the skinās surface to remove existing pigmentation,ā James states. Together, the trio essentially generates new, healthier skin in place of older, discoloured skin without impacting healthy surrounding skin. James suggests that the older the pigmentation, the longer it can take to resolve due to the likelihood of further sun exposure, however Skin Success will make an impact regardless.
Whether the remnants of pimples gone by are weighing you down, or looming fine lines are cramping your style, the Skin Success line by Palmerās is worth a look in.

A Beginners Guide to Anti-Aging: New to anti-aging products? Ingredients, Routine, and Application Tips
The world of skincare is a vast and often overwhelming one where the process of purchasing the right products feels much like searching for needles in a haystack. By the time you hit your mid-twenties, your skinās needs change, and youāll likely find yourself tempted by bold marketing lingo that promises to āLift and Plump!ā or āFarewell Wrinkles!ā The truth is, much like our hair colours, body shapes and personalities, our skin types are unique and individually effected by internal and external skin agers. Therefore, the manner in which we approach our anti-aging skincare routines should be personal and considered.
Skin care expert and Founding Director of UW Collective, Annabelle Personeni has engineered anti-aging products for Johnson & Johnson, Yves Rocher and Aākin. Annabelle explains that while weāre incapable of changing our genetic makeup, we do have sway over a number of external aging contributors, such as exposure to the sun, lack of sleep, smoking and diet choices. According to Personeni, a good anti-aging product āwill contain high levels of antioxidants and will have a base which will deeply hydrate the skin and reinforce its barrier integrity.ā
Weāve cut through the noise and compiled a basic guide on how to develop your very first anti-aging skincare routine ā one suitable for all skin types.
Ā THE FIVE PRODUCTS YOU NEED
In the simplest terms, every skincare routine (especially one targeted towards anti ageing should contain: Cleanser (and a double cleanse at that), an Exfoliant, Serum, Moisturiser, and the biggest essential of all: Sunscreen.
Ā CLEANSER TIMES TWO
Cleansing contributes positively to our skinās natural renewal cycle. Gently cleansing the skin both in the morning and before bed counteracts the havoc numerous external aggravators can play at a surface level; aggravators including pollution, indoor heating, dirt and makeup. Immediate signs of neglect often include clogged pores, an uneven tone, and dullness. Personeni advises, āit is important to choose cleansing products which respect the skin lipids, the skin pH and the natural microflora,ā whereby the fewer additives your products contain, the better your skin will likely react. Opt for cream and oil cleansers in place of āsoapierā alternatives that tend to dry skin out (try Freshās Soy Face Cleanser or Dermalogicaās UltraCalming Cleanser). This first step will "melt" away the bulk of your makeup without stripping the skin. Follow up with a gentle cleanser, micellar waters work great, try Biodermaās Sensibio H20 Make-up Removing Micelle Solution or Sisleyās Eau Efficace Gentle Makeup Remover.
Ā TIP: Be mindful when cleansing your eye area. Skin is thin and your eyes are more susceptible to irritation if exposed to chemicals.
Ā AN EFFECTIVE EXFOLIATOR
Exfoliating the skin two-three times per week takes the benefits of cleansing to a deeper level (literally and figuratively). While we often pinpoint the earliest sign of aging to be the development of fine lines, Personeni notes that itās actually the subtle changes to the skinās structure and colour that really play a part, whereby āpores become enlarged, the skin surface doesnāt reflect light as well, and starts to yellowā. For a cleanse that is effective without being rough and corase on the skin, try exfoliators containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), like Glycolic or Lactic Acids, also designed to clear away dead skin cells for an evenly pigmented complexion (Chemical Exfoliants: Breakdown and Product Recommendations) AHAs are proven to shorten the skinās renewal cycle from 28 to 16-20 days, Personeni explains, thereby getting your skin fresher, faster. The trick is to incorporate an AHA-based exfoliator into your routine for a couple of months at a time only (for example, in the lead up to a special event), because eventually your skin will adapt and results will subside. Try Alpha-Hās acclaimed Liquid Gold or Wander Beauty Fast Lane Instant Facial
SUPER SERUM
Often misunderstood yet highly effective, serums are fine liquids designed to plump the skin and target unique concerns. Lighter in consistency than traditional creams and lotions, serums contain tiny molecules that penetrate the skin deeply, providing reparative ingredients to unexposed dermal layers. This process is especially effective when using thin water-based serums gently pressed (not rubbed) into the skin post-cleansing. There are umpteen serums available, so itās helpful to first identify what it is youād like to achieve for your skin before āAdding to Cartā. As a general starting point, Personeni suggests trying a serum containing plant extracts āwhich are rich in flavonoidsā as they are good āāfree radical catchersā and will help protect the skin against the effect of pollution and lightā. A great product for this is Innisfreeās Green Tea Seed Serum. Once you become familiar with how a serum works and feels, take your time to research what ingredients will respond best with your skin.
TIP: āTo me, skin care is a tactile business,ā Personeni says on her preferred application method. āOur hands know our face, and massaging the skin gently with our fingers and warm palm of the hand is a wholesome way to be in tune with our skin, feel the life in it, be one with it!ā
Ā MOISTURISER
Applying a moisturiser is often the first step we take in attempting to slow the skinās aging process. Weāre huge advocates of this, however it would be remiss to choose just any cream to apply. At the first signs of aging, Personeni recommends sourcing products rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory actives that āwill help neutralise free radicals and pathways involved in the damage of skinās vital structures.ā Ultimately, youāll see greater benefit from building the integrity of your skin at this early stage, rather than trying to reverse any pre-existing problems. Look out for moisturisers ā whether in the form of a cream, lotion or gel ā that contain any one or more of the following: vitamin E (to repair), vitamin C (to lighten), beta carotene/vitamin A (to divert UVA exposure), and Lycopene (to protect). āBy keeping my skin at its optimal health level, it is in a much better position to defend itself against environmental damage,ā Personeni explains. Try REN V-Cense Revitalising Night Cream to tick multiple boxes in one.
Got acne, but want anti ageing benefits? Itās also not uncommon to experience multiple skin concerns at once (particularly in your twenties while your body goes through varied hormonal highs and lows). If youāre one of many of us trying to stave off adult acne, search for creams containing Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3 required by the body), like Olayās Total Effects 7 in One Day Cream SPF 15 which is known to prevent acne while boosting hydration levels required to keep skin looking young. Alternatively, Personeni suggests tackling one problem at a time to allow skin to adapt to targeted products.
Ā TIP: While weāre a big fan of oils, moisturisers often contain particles that are water-soluble and are therefore easier for the skin to soak up. Instead, consider applying oil on top of your moisturiser for a dewy finish.
Ā SAVE THE BEST āTIL LAST, SUNSCREEN
Youāve heard it before and youāll hear it again ā there is no product more reliable to steer your skin away from the signs of aging than a sunscreen. This is essentially due to the fact that a trusty Broad Spectrum SPF containing protection against both UVA and UVB rays will deter light from infiltrating the skin. While a short kick of vitamin D is encouraged, prolonged sun exposure is not. Too much can disturb the reproduction of healthy skin cells like collagen and elastin (that keep skin firm), cause dryness and irritation, not to mention the risk of skin cancer development. While outdoors, choose products containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which work to physically block the sun. And while many of us work indoors and feel weāre exempt from requiring a daily SPF, youād be wise to opt for foundation and moisturising products containing even a small SPF rating, as light passing through windows and reflecting off screens can be just as damaging. āFoundation formulations are rich in particles to opacify and help cover imperfections,ā Personeni says. āParticles do help shield the skin from the sun, but unless it has been tested for SPF, the protection is unreliable.ā Again, consider products rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory actives, Personeni advocates, because they āquench free radicals generated by light, and limit damage to the skin.ā Weāve been using Ultraceuticals Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 50+ Mattifying for years.
TIP: āIn regards to storage, I prefer to store my products at ambient temperature rather than the fridge,ā Personeni admits, āas some actives can crystallize at low temperature. Best is to not buy too many products ahead of time!ā
Ā THE NICE-TO-HAVEāS (great additions to your skincare routine, but not necessary):
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Toner
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Oil
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Eye Cream
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Masks
Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Facials and Cosmetic Treatments
Ā LONG STORY SHORTā¦
Personeniās advice: keep it simple. āIt is best to have a regular skin care routine with low impact products rather than an erratic routine with episodes of high potency treatments.ā Ultimately, the aim of the game when it comes to anti-aging is to keep your skin healthy, in much the same way you do for your body. Opt for products whose brand youāre familiar with, whose ethos you align with, thatās ingredients correspond to your skin type, and all in all, youād be proud to house in your bathroom cabinet.
Perfect base makeup often involves a consistent skin tone and smooth finish. Layered between your moisturiser and foundation, primer is designed to do this by āfilling inā your skinās pores to reduce the build up of oil and to create a more even surface on which foundation can sit. Primers are also frequented for their ability to ālockā foundation in place, so youāre less likely to experience transfer throughout the day. Youāll notice they can come with other perks, such as a tint to mask discolouration, illuminating particles for a lasting glow, and nutrients to simultaneously heal and protect the skinās external and internal layers.
Carol Mackie, Senior Global Artist for MAC says that while all skin types will benefit from primer use, oilier skin types in particular āare more prone to make up wearing off more quickly so a primer will prolong the wear of foundation.ā The same goes for hotter climates, where primers are key to ensuring your foundation wonāt slide with sweat.
TIP: Ensure sunscreen is applied underneath your primer and thoroughly absorbed ā safety first!
Consider primer application prior to your foundation much like stretching ahead of a jog ā skipping step one usually means problems for step two. Wearing a primer will allow your foundation to work to its full potential, however choosing any primer off the shelf could be remiss. When cooking, mixing oil with water simply doesnāt work. The liquids are different in build and remain separate even when spun together. The same principle can be seen for oil and water-based cosmetics. While hard to measure definitively, your safest bet is to marry like-for-like base products for the most even, long-lasting foundation finish.
TIP: Primer neednāt be applied across the whole face, says Mackie. For those with combination skin types, best apply primer along the oiliest areas of the face only, avoiding dry spots where primer isnāt necessary.
Make Up For Ever boasts a range of primers that can be layered, depending on your desired end result. The brandās Makeup For Ever Step 1 Mattifying Primer is numbered one of eleven in this range, and is best worn alone as it doesnāt contain silicones. Instead, it contains silica that is a naturally occurring property that, like its synthetic sister silicone, is able to absorb moisture.
Other primer products that fit this bill include Too Facedās Hangover Primer a lightweight primer that feels divine on the skin, MACās Prep + Prime Natural Radiance that contains illuminating vitamins E and C, and cruelty-free brand BECCAās First Light Priming Filter. For a totally silicone and toxin-free option, try little-known brand Vapour Organic Beautyās Status Soft Focus Skin Perfecting Primer, which is ideal for those keen on exploring an all-natural, water-based solution.
TIP: āApply with a brush rather than your fingertips to avoid any natural oils in your fingers, and the brush will allow primer to glide on evenly!ā Mackie suggests.
The same is often said for silicone-based products that act similarly to oils in that they are both stagnant. In other words, silicones and oils alike wonāt penetrate the skin like water, but rather rest in our pores to create an even slate on which a foundation can sit and latch onto. These products work best for those with mature skin because such additives provide an exceptionally plump finish younger skins donāt need. Dimethicone, for example, is commonly used and acts as a conditioning solution for the skin, delivering a velvety, smooth finish while retaining water.
For the perfect everyday primer which hydrates the skin, helps foundation glide on smoothly, and increases wear (and works with a variety of different foundation formulas) you canāt go past Marc Jacobsā Beauty Under(Cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer. Its smooth, lightweight, water-based formula works for all skintypes and wonāt aggravate sensitive skin.
Smashbox PhotoFinish Foundation Primer and BareMineralsā Prime Time Original Foundation Primer are transparent gels that glide on and leave an invisible, powdery-matte veil. La Merās The Hydrating Illuminator does a beautiful job at delivering to its name. Work it overtime as a cream highlighter on top of your foundation, too. Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer is a fantastic all-rounder primer that truly doesnāt budge and will fill you with confidence on a night out of dancing, itās especially great for ultra oily skin!
Sisley has an exceptional track record of delivering effective skin and makeup products. The verdict is no different when it comes to their Sisley Instant Correct Color Correcting Primer. As one of two shades available, Just Lavender offsets dull pale skin and red undertones, while simultaneously softening fine lines. For a fraction of the cost, Rimmelās Insta CC Primers are also worth a try and like Sisleyās, its liquid is creamy and blendable, unlike the thick, pigmented colour-correctors weāve trialed in the past.
Napoleon Perdisā Auto Pilot Brightening Skin Primer, housed in a distinguishable pink tube, is also a decent all-rounder that soaks into skin leaving a dewy, hydrated playing field on which to apply your foundation of choice. We found it worked well under a variety of foundation types. If a two-in-one primer-foundation product excites you, have a go of Dermalogicaās Skinperfect Primer SPF 30. Itās been a beauty cabinet staple for years, and works wonders on minimal make-up days. Youāll reap the benefits of a broad-spectrum protectant, long-lasting tint, and airbrushed finish in one.
TIP: Post-application, allow your primer to sit and soak into the skin before adding your foundation; a good 60 seconds should do the trick.

If you write for a site called Makeup Tips, itās pretty much a given that you will be asked āWhat is your favourite makeup tip?ā on the regular. In this article our team of writers share their very best, top favourite, holy grail makeup tip.
āMix orange lipstick with your concealer on the back of your hand! This is my all-time favourite makeup tip. It makes your concealer creamier and the orange helps to counteract any blue tones underneath the eyes. I like to use one with a bit of shimmer in it for the very best results!ā
Evangeline Sarney
āInvest in a grainy (but gentle!) lip exfoliator to buff away any flakiness before adding a primer. Youāll create an even slate on which to apply your favourite lipstick. Heading into the cooler months in Australia, dry and chapped lips fast become a persistent beauty burden. For an added bonus use it after showering when lips are already softened!ā
Hannah Gay
āI always have issues with my eye makeup smudging, so I make sure to set around my eyes with a little powder. This stops everything being too creamy and melting together.ā
Olivia Henderson
āA makeup artist taught me to bend and fold strip false lashes as the glue dries before putting them on. This helps the false lashes sit more naturally when you apply them. It has made applying false lashes 100 times easierā

How to Pick a Top Trending Nail Polish Shade to Suit Your Skin Tone
Dialling up your digits with a swipe of colour is an easy way to add instant flair to any beauty look. Your skin tone plays an important role in determining just how a particular shade will size up. We narrow in on the top trending nail shades of the moment and how you can make them work in your favour.
Tip: When selecting a nail polish envision a colour wheel, keeping in mind that sometimes opposites attract.
FAIR & LIGHT SKIN
While the colour of our skin helps determine how well certain nail shades will suit us, the real clue is hidden (literally) in our skinās undertone. This is especially important for those with a paler complexion. Whether youāre veering on the edge of porcelain or working your way up to light beige, take a moment to liken your undertone to red, blue or yellow. Envision a colour wheel, keeping in mind that sometimes opposites attract.
This is certainly the case for those with cool blue or red undertones, so next time you find yourself torn between OPIās Big Apple Red and Amore At The Grand Canal, opt for a polish thatās base shade contrasts your undertone by sourcing lacquers with a deep blue base. Delve into a heavy plum shade like JINSOONās Nail Lacquer in Audacity, or consider Sally Hansenās Insta-Dri Nail Color in Midnight Drive
For those with a warm, yellow undertone, playing match is your best bet to a winning look. Consider a forest green shade like OPIās Infinite Shine 2 Lacquer in Olive For Green
Tip: Itās important to leave at least a millimeter gap between your cuticles and polish when wearing red polish, otherwise it may stain and look as though cuticles are inflamed or infected!
MID-TONED & MEDIUM SKIN
Flat, matte-look nails are still trending, and those with a mid-toned or olive complexion are in prime position to take advantage of powdery blue and grey shades at their next polish appointment. These shades are ideal as we head into the cooler months, and pair nicely with a soft Winter knit.
Get on the bandwagon with Essieās Nail Color in Lapiz of Luxury. Sally Hansenās freshly unveiled Color Therapy Moroccan Spice Collection comes in a moody grey-brown called Slate Escape. Otherwise, consider a pastel, earthy green with Smith & Cultās Nailed Lacquer Nail Polish in Bitter Buddhist
Tip: If you canāt find the perfect matte, use a matte top coat like OPI Matte Top Coat it transforms any shade into a modern matte.
DEEPER & DARK SKIN
While a lighter nail shade can often leave our paler-toned friends feeling āwashed outā, a classic white or beige polish against deeper skin tones has the opposite affect. Darker skintones can pull off most nail shades especially cool bright pinks and reds (due to the high contrast) but bright neon shades aside, thereās nothing bolder than a bright white to make an impact.
An icy snow-white shade really packs a punch, like MECCA MAXās Hot Tips Nail Polish in Bridezilla, or try a hint of pink using Revlonās ColorStay Gel Envy Longwear Nail Enamel in Up in CharmsĀ Want some luxury? Look no further than Tom Fordās Nail Lacquer in Toasted Sugar for the perfect muted beige youāve always needed.
Tip: A stark white polish is a nail staple, it can be used underneath sheer nail polishes to intensify their colour.
Nail Shades ā Q&A with expert manicurist, Jocelyn Petroni
Jocelyn Petroni is a leading manicurist & official nail expert for CHANEL Australia. Jocelyn has her own nail salon and spa in Sydney, Australia.
When it comes to wearing a particular nail colour, do the length, size and shape of the nail matter?
All of these factors are really subjective and people have all manner of preferences. In terms of the latest nail trends, nail length is remaining short and natural, however the free edges of the nail are now starting to curve so the nail is not such a blunt square shape, but slightly more feminine.
In this article we recommend: deep blue-based reds for pale skin tones, matte blue-greys for mid/olive skin tones, and stark whites for deeper skin tones as we come into the cooler months. Can you provide any further support on why these shades can work for individuals with these skin tones?
Deep blue-based reds are a striking contrast to pale skin tones, which makes the nails pop. Thereās something beautifully classic in the look of deep blood-red hues against a fair skin tone, I love how this look is so versatile and conveys feminine, bold, chic and sexy.
Any final tips on how one can achieve a perfect finish to their manicure, even if doing at home?
The best advice I always give my clients is that a manicure or pedicure is only as good as the time and effort that goes into the preparation and protection. It is crucial to prepare the nail bed and groom the cuticles beforehand. A base coat is just like painting a house, itās the foundation for the end result and when done well (i.e. with quality product that treats the nail at the same time), will give you a much better lasting effect on the finished job. Use a topcoat that is durable, and chip resistant to ensure you get up to a week from your home manicure. Another tip is to reapply the top coat every second day to stretch out the manicure lasting power. Ā I love Mavalaās Gel Top Coat, as it adds a layer of gloss and volume to protect your manicure.
