MY 9 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN LESSON 639:

1) I did find it amusing that Takasugi was working so hard to save the Earth cuz he wanted to destroy it himself.

2) Kiheitai love. They looked so cool!

3) Takasugi’s words: “When I despaired and looked up towards the Heavens, the thing reflected in the clouded eyes was not some Heaven where you rested peacefully. It was simply the backs of my comrades, fighting there, just like I was. That’s why we’re fighting here. No matter how covered in despair the living world is, we have to fight.”

4) Takasugi looking actually happy and excited.

5) This was a shocking sequence. 

6) I couldn’t believe he was actually killed off...Batou pretty much reappeared just to be killed off. Even though I didn’t care much about him, I remember tearing up a little over his shocking death because I was so caught off guard by it.

7) I was seriously shocked and a little impressed that Sorachi-sama was killing off characters left and right because I thought Shokaku perished as well.

8) I knew it had to be serious since Henpeita actually lost his dead fish eyes.

9) I remember being a little disappointed that Matako had to be put in peril here because I didn’t want her to be the damsel in distress, nor did I want this moment to be a catalyst for Takasugi to admit his feelings to her because it was a bit of a cheap ploy and I thought she deserved more than that. Of course this was all before I knew how the whole thing would be resolved, but I still wished her life wasn’t endangered like that.

Disclaimer: Gintama is not only about shipping. Gintama is hilarious, clever, exciting, poignant, heart-breaking, loving, brilliant, and just so freaking amazing.  It is only due to Sorachi-sama’s generosity that I can enjoy Gintama on yet another level, the shippy level, and I am forever grateful for that.
