11 days until Christmas and today I thought I’d share two books from Hanif Willis-Abdurraquib that I’ve been really wanting to read. I was first introduced to his work when I read his essay “On College” in an Advanced Writing class. Something about his work hit me, and I have ever sense really wanted to read more of his work. Thus, here are two of his books that I’ve heard are really good. The first is “A Little Devil in America: Notes in Praise of Black Performance.” I love Black art, even if I don’t come from a place where I can fully grasp it on my first read or watch or listen, but it is deep and complex and I want to learn more. I read the works of Chinua Achebe and George Lamming and August Wilson and listen to black poets read their poetry aloud, both for enjoyment and to understand a bit better. And this takes me to a field that I’ve known for a long time and yet don’t always think about critically: performance. Music and comedy. The things I loved so much growing up. To have a deeper, richer understanding of that would be wonderful. The second is a collection of personal essays: “They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us.” They just released an anniversary edition, I understand, and I’d love to have that on my shelf. His personal essay on how fast people will turn to stereotypes when it suits them, even when they’ve made it clear in the past that they don’t see you as that stereotype, was gripping, and I want to read more of these wonderful essays. Anyway, I’ll share some more texts I want tomorrow. This book left me trembling in tears this evening. Unable to speak or move as time stood still. I have protested in every unjust black murder since Trayvon Martin. Screaming for change and knowing that I will never know the pain and anger of the black people I was marching with. Wishing I could carry just some of their weight. Feeling guilty as a mom of two white boys, knowing I will never have to fear for their lives the way a beautiful black momma does. The world is SO VERY FUCKED! Me and my love met through music. We celebrate, move, & exist with the help of music. He is a force to be reckoned with when he plays drums. His beautiful black skin glowing with sweat, his eyes focused on the kill, his arms and legs using every ounce of energy a human can possibly harness! It’s fucking magic to watch! Lightning in a bottle! He’s been traveling time zones and living his dream of playing music live again. (Covid tried to steal it one too many times)! When he calls, he will ask in the sweetest voice that makes my heart swell…”what time is it there?”I feel his absence with every fiber of my being whilst simultaneously celebrating what he has accomplished as a musician. I’m so ridiculously proud of him. I also get worried every time he travels. “Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to a Tribe Called Quest,” Hanif Abdurraqib: Back in the days of CD longboxes (if you know you know), I picked up De La Soul’s Three Feet High and Rising, and my head exploded. From there, I dug and found Tribe’s Low End Theory, and forget it. It had everything, plus Q-Tip. It was fun, and deep, and new, and classic, all at once. “Go Ahead...” reads like a timeline of that unforgettable era, punctuated with a string of stream of conscious fan letters to the characters that made it come alive. If Q’s rhymes over an acoustic bass sample makes you feel ecstatic and weak at the same time, dive in.
