The mystery of the long-living (20 years!) family sourdough starter recipe has been solved (and found!). As it turns out, it was used primarily not for bread, not for buckwheat, but for sourdough pancakes - or hot cakes - as Grandpa liked to call them. 🥞 Tucked inside my mom’s cookbook was his original recipe that he had sent her sometime in the 1980s when the starter was living its best life alongside my grandpa. 🥞 In his everyday demeanor Grandpa could be a little stern and a little steely, but I like to think, based on this recipe and his notes, that he saved all his fun and all his joy for cooking. Happy Saturday! This is what storytelling looked like in the 1960s, kitchen style! From the land of a Southern fare comes this batch of 53 handwritten recipes. It’s a most interesting collection with five (5!) different variations for barbecue sauce, two Bloody Mary recipes, bird pie, French soufflé, soups, sauces, casseroles, desserts and even a chicken stir-fry recipe for 25 people suitable for “the club.” How fun! With the exception of Velveeta cheese in the Chili con Carne and a few canned mushrooms this collection features all fresh, whole ingredients and special kitchen notes all written out on looseleaf paper that has aged beautifully. A true kitchen character thankfully rescued from obscurity! He has many treasured books like this with things he wishes to remember. It's so sweet and I feel so grateful to have been brought into his world.
