Eighty years of stories, laughter, debate, fury, and layer upon layer of paint stripped away to reveal the original wood hidden away. I could have bought a new door that looked similar in style and painted it to blend in, but why interrupt such a great story or replace such a well crafted door? I’d say literally 90% of what I’ve learned about restoring or repairing doors I’ve learned from @thisoldhouse • I came to the trades as a college student in need of a way to pay my way (I have three degrees...🤦🏻‍♂️). Later in life when I needed to transition from one vocation to another I came back to the trades and did my best to self educate through back issues of @finehomebuilding and YouTube. Skills gap indeed... • We’re coming to the final phase of work at the palace and I tackled this door today which was rotted out on the bottom. It had slats for venting, which is necessary. I made two face-frames with oak to sand which a section of woven stainless steel mesh from @mcnicholsco • From there I pretty much just followed the inimitable Tom Silva’s technique for a Dutchman. How do you fabricate 45 LF of 5/4 Oak Bar-Rail that’s easy to dissemble@and store?? With @festool dominos. Thanks again to @t.ernsberger for the recommendation on domino sizing! Normally I would have built it as a continuous run, but we need to be able to remove abs store these when we move on the next phase of work @brooklynbrewery • I thought about trying domino connectors, but couldn’t find any locally (ahem... @gt.rentals) so instead once the two section slide together I’ll use two short cabinet screws through the plywood lap-joint easy to remove later on. • Still have to finish sanding before applying the first coat of shellac. • #builtinbrooklyn #buildthisbar #buildingataproom #brooklynbrewery #precisioninnovations #woodwork #nycprojectmanager #handsonprojectmanager #thefox (at The Brooklyn Brewery)
