"living weapon!" handler shouts, trying to break past villain's guards. "living weapon look at me!"
they look up, arm still around henchman's neck. "handler? you got out?"
"let's get out of here." they look at living weapon, "i'm tired, let's go."
living weapon drops henchman on the ground and runs to them, villain's team jumping out of their path. "you're okay?" living weapon asks, hands on their shoulders as they look them over. "are you okay?"

Living Weapon stalks her prey, following him through dark alleys and crowded streets, always a few feet behind, just far enough so he doesnât see her. Her eyes never leave him, she watches him avoid bumping into people, jumping out of his skin every time someone brushes against him.Â
She smiles softly, he didnât used to be like that.Â
With one hand, she runs her thumb over the folds in an old, faded picture of him and her. His arm is wrapped around her, a small smile on his face as he points at her, beer in hand. Sheâs curled under his arm, trying to escape him. Thereâs no emotion on her face, but if you look close enough, and nobody ever did, thereâs terror in her eyes. Her other hand sits comfortably on her dagger, engraved with his initials on the hilt, hers on the base of the blade. She runs her index finger over the hilt, imagining the âHâ under the pad of her finger.Â
Handler turns suddenly and Living Weapon spins on her heels, looking at the ground next to her feet. She curses softly and tightens her grip over the dagger, praying that he turns back around, brushing off whatever made him turn so suddenly and go back about his day.Â
Slowly, she turns her head in an attempt to see him out of the corner of her eye. With one glance, she turns back around and falls back a few more feet, not enough to lose him completely but enough to fill in the space just enough so he wonât see her.Â
Heâs moving quicker now, thereâs an urgency in his walk that she hasnât seen in a long time. With a small smile, she takes longer strides. Unlike the dozens he made her go on, sheâs enjoying this hunt. And the terror in his eyes when he realizes sheâs caught him will be unmatched.Â
He opens a small gate, lifting the lever up and pushing it open. It creaks, loud enough that she can hear it from several yards back. He walks through the small âyard,â mostly concrete and weeds, and walk up a few steps. She watches his hands shake when he stands on his doorstep, keys in hand. The door pushes open and he walks inside, closing the door quickly behind him.Â
Living Weapon lets go of the dagger and steps over the gate. She looks ahead, knowing that if she looks back to see who saw her, sheâll blow her cover. For all anyone knows, she lives there and just doesnât want to listen to the squeaky gate.Â
Then, she steps through the yard, avoiding the patches of weeds growing through the concrete. She makes it up to the doorstep and pushes a buzzer for the floor above Handlerâs apartment.Â
âHello?â Comes a warbled voice.Â
âHi!â Living Weapon says, voice scarily happy for what sheâs there for. âIâm supposed to be feeding my cousinsâ fish, but I lost my key somewhere in her apartment last time I came in. Could you buzz me in?âÂ
âSure thing,â the voice says again. The door makes a whirring sound and after a second, Living Weapon turns the handle and pushes the door open.Â
Walking into the apartment, she exhales slowly and gives herself a moment to gather herself. She pulls the door closed and leans against it, closing her eyes.Â
âOk,â she whispers to herself. She taps each of her fingers against her thumb and tucks the photo into her pocket, then walks down the damp, mold smelling hallway.Â
She stops in front of Handlerâs door, wiping her feet on his painted coir welcome mat on the floor.Â
She exhales sharply and raises her hand to knock on the door, calling out, âMaintenance!â She lowers her face and pulls her hood over her head, before knocking again, âPipe burst in the apartment above you, need to make sure youâre not experiencing any leaks.âÂ
Handler grumbles, his boots stomping closer to the door, âAlright, alright. Iâm cominâ. Goddamnit, I just got home, couldnât even open a drink before someone comes to fuckinâ bother me.âÂ
He slides the bolt, turns the lock, and unhooks the chain before opening the door.Â
âI havenât seen any fuckinâ leak,â He says, stepping aside.Â
Living Weapon pushes her way the rest of the way into the apartment and closes the door behind her, âThatâs good.âÂ
Handler looks up, blood draining from his face. He shakes his head, stumbles back, and trips over a stray shoe on the floor.Â
Living Weapon smiles cruelly and re-locks the door.Â
âItâs kinda funny,â she says, sliding the bolt closed again, âAll these locks and you donât check to see whoâs at your door.âÂ
He shakes his head and pushes himself back until he hits the wall, âI killed you.âÂ
His voice is shaking, eyes locked on her like heâs seeing a ghost.Â
Living Weapon pouts and takes a few steps forward. She nods, traces over the scar on her chest and her smile falls. âYou took a stab at it.â She smiles again, faintly and chuckles softly, âPun intended.âÂ
Handler squeezes his eyes shut and shakes his head again, âNo. You stopped breathing. IâŠI buried you.âÂ
âLike I said,â Living Weapon snaps, kneeling in front of him. She lifts his chin with the hilt of her dagger, âYou certainly exerted yourself.âÂ
His chin trembles, âWhat are you going to do to me?âÂ
She tilts her head and smiles, baring her teeth. âDonât speak.âÂ
He nods furiously, shutting his mouth. His breath comes in short bursts, fogging up the blade of the dagger. Tears start to form in his eyes and Living Weapon rolls her eyes.Â
She falls back on her heels and lowers the dagger so it sits over his heart. It cuts through the fabric of his shirt and she pushes it into his skin. âStop sniveling. Itâs not a good color on you.âÂ
He takes a quick, forceful breath and nods. Snot falls out of his nose and he wipes it on his sleeve, âWhat can I do?âÂ
âI told you to shut up.â she snaps, pressing the dagger into his chest.Â
She watches as blood seeps through his shirt, just enough to make a small dime-sized stain. She blinks and takes a measured breath.Â
âFuck,â she whispers, pulling the blade away from his chest.Â
She stands up and puts the dagger back in its sheath.Â
âWhatâs going on?â Handler asks, eyeing her warily.Â
She glares at him, but doesnât remind him heâs supposed to shut the fuck up. She turns away from him and walks into his kitchen.Â
With feverish movements, she rifles through his drawers, tossing things onto the ground behind her.Â
âI came hereâŠâ she says, opening a cabinet and knocking spice jars onto the counter, âTo kill you.âÂ
Handler shakes his head and makes a small, pathetic sound.Â
âBut that would mean you were right about me.â She says, finally finding what she was looking for. She holds the lighter in her hand and clicks it until it lights. âAnd you werenât. Iâm notâŠâ she trails off and shakes her head. âIâm not like you. I'm nothing like you. So I'm going to leave.âÂ
She pulls the picture out of her pocket and holds the corner up to the flame. It catches and she watches as the fire climbs up the edges of the picture, engulfing it in its hungry blaze.Â
She drops the photo on the wooden floor and watches it burn, then stomps the ashes until the embers die.Â
âYou were wrong about me,â she says, voice breaking.Â
Handler stares at the scorched wood under her foot and then up at her. Thereâs still so much fear in his eyes. She almost chuckles, pulls her phone out and holds it in her hands.Â
âSmile,â She says, void of any emotion. The flash snaps and Handler flinches. Living Weapon looks at the screen and nods, then pockets her phone again. âNow I can remember how fucking terrified you are of me.âÂ
She squats down in front of him and leans in close, her nose brushing against his cheek. âYou shouldâve dug a deeper hole.â

Living Weapon resituates on the couch, tucking its legs underneath itself hoping to find a perfect position to fall asleep in. It lays its head on the armrest and watches the documentary.
Lights flash in the corner of its eye and its heart drops. The frosted glass around the doorframe lights up a few more times and Living Weapon stares hopelessly outside. It looks at Caretaker, the TV reflecting on her sleeping face. It blinks and looks ahead, counting the flashing lights in Caretakerâs driveway. By some miracle the flashing light doesnât wake her up and Living Weapon walks up to the door.Â
It slides the bolt over and cracks the door open. The flashing lights stop and Living Weapon steps out onto the porch. The concrete has been warmed by the sun and it relishes in the moment, closing its eyes for just a second. The car honks and Living Weapon springs to life.Â
It slides into the passenger seat and stares at Caretakerâs house. Slowly, it relaxes into the seat and looks at Handler. The lines on his face are more defined, softening him almost. Living Weapon bites the inside of its cheek until it tastes blood. It inhales sharply and looks at Caretakerâs front door.Â
âGlad you came out, I didnât want to break in.â Handler says, tapping irritably on the steering wheel.Â
Its breath hitches and it looks at its hands. Almost whispering, it asks, âHow did you find me?âÂ
âOh please,â Handler scoffs. âI never lost you.âÂ
Living Weapon nods solemnly and takes a shuddering inhale. âSo what now?âÂ
Handler huffs and reverses out of the driveway. He stares at the road and sighs, âNow youâve hopefully found out that everything I do is to help you. Not to hurt you. Now we go home and fix whatever Caretaker did to you.â
Living Weapon picks at its cuticles as Handler turns and twists and travels back to the cabin in the forest that he called home.Â
Blood beads out of Living Weaponâs nail bed by the time Handler parks the truck. He jumps out of the truck and motions for it to do the same.Â
Its feet sink into the mud and when it pulls its foot out of the mud, its sock stays. Living Weapon jumps to the small mat outside the door and wipes its feet, doing its best to get all the mud off of its feet before walking inside behind Handler.
He whistles and throws a bundle of clothes at it, âPut these on.â They fall onto Living Weaponâs feet and Handler seethes.Â
âWhat happened to you?âÂ
Quickly, Living Weapon plucks the clothes off the ground and smears the mud around, working it into the fabric. âIâm tired, I wasnât expecting it. Nothingâs happened.âÂ
Handler chucks his shoe at it, âI think youâre slow. I think Caretaker coddled the killer instinct in you and now you canât keep yourself alive. You rely on her.âÂ
Living Weapon spits and hurls the shoe back at Handler. âYouâre wrong!â it stomps up to Handler and hovers a hand over his chest. âShe made me stronger than you ever could.âÂ
It takes a deep breath and lowers its hand to its side. Handler exhales shakily and blinks a few times, forcing a laugh.Â
âThen why did you come back with me? If youâre so strong?âÂ
Living Weapon grins, its teeth showing, âTo do this.âÂ
Without a momentâs hesitation, it charges Handler and shoves him up against the kitchen wall, hands around his neck. Handler gasps, a hand flying up to his throat and he tries to claw Living Weaponâs hands off of him as the other gropes behind him, hopelessly searching for something to help.Â
Living Weapon pulls him away from the wall and slams him back, his head making a sickening cracking sound at impact. Handlerâs mouth makes a strangled sound and his head falls forward, nose brushing Living Weaponâs arm.Â
Living Weapon lets him go, his body falling forward onto the kitchen floor. Blood spills onto the tile and Living Weapon watches it spread. The blood reaches its feet and Living Weapon steps in the puddle of it, letting it get sticky underneath it. Slowly, it reaches into Handlerâs pocket and pulls the keys to his truck out.Â
It peels its feet up from the ground and walks out of the cabin. This time, it avoids the mud and climbs into the driverâs seat.Â
The music blares through the speakers, deafening Living Weapon to its thoughts as it drives back home to Caretaker.
