#62 On Scenius
I completed the Walter Isaacson biography of Elon Musk sometime back and have been reflecting on the idea of the ‘lone geniuses’ versus what the musician Brian Eno calls ‘scenius’. While Eno is referring to artistic and creative disciplines when he highlights the power of community and the pyramid like structure he borrows from the formation of an orchestra, the idea that science and technology…

The Art of Doing Science and Engineering: Learning to Learn
The book is filled with stories of great people performing mighty deeds--but they are not meant to simply be admired. Instead, they are to be aspired to, learned from, and surpassed. Hamming consistently returns to Shannon's information theory, Einstein's relativity, Grace Hopper's work on high-level programming, Kaiser's work on digital fillers, and his own error-correcting codes. He also recounts a number of his spectacular failures as clear examples of what to avoid.
Originally published in 1996 and adapted from a course that Hamming taught at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, this edition includes an all-new foreword by designer, engineer, and founder of Dynamicland Bret Victor, and more than 70 redrawn graphs and charts.

Bandish Bandits... Another day, another musical! BANDISH BANDITS is a 10 episode serial on Amazon Prime. Panditji Radhey Mohan rathore (superbly acted by Naseeruddin Shah) is the head of Rathore Gharana of classical music. He's the Sangeet samrat of Jodhpur. His 2 sons have not been as successful in music , but his grandson, Radhey(Ritwick Bhowmik, a wooden performance, I felt) is a successful classical singer, playing bandish after bandish (classical composition) with great aplomb. He meets Tamanna (Shreya Chaudhary, little better performance), a pop music performer , and singer. They fall in love, first with the music of the other, and then with each other. For Radhey's family , any type of music except classic is blasphemy, but Radhey joins Tamanna , to create Bandish Bandits. The test of the story is about the Rathore family dynamics , and the clash between two very different music fraternities. The Star of the show is the music. Classical style , but very enjoyable, like the 60's and 70's Bollywood music. Shankar, Loy, Ehsaan have done a superb job and kept the serial going. Otherwise, the story was pretty slow, I felt 3.3/5 for me, but 4.5 for the music...
