This is definitely a valid concern. Horses are notoriously talented for injuring themselves on things when left to their own devices. If you absolutely must leave a halter on a horse when it is turned out, make sure to use one with a breakaway component, such as a thin leather crownpiece. Often on a solid nylon halter the hardware will break, but this still requires an immense amount of force which is more than enough to cause injury. Thin leather will tear much more easily and can be replaced without replacing the entire halter.
