Hi,I think your art style is pretty damn neat. I have a question do you have any tips on drawing scars?
thank you! unfortunately, i do not have any detailed or specific advice on that.
However, what i will say is to always always always look at reference images. no matter the style of art, it’s important to have an understanding of how the injury would appear irl. i often do not follow this advice and end up getting very unrealistic and overly exaggerated scars as a result lol.
a good thing to keep in mind is how the scar was formed and from what.
if it was due to any sort of weapon or object, then keep in mind how much force was required and in what direction. was it an accident? was it a clean procedure or done with malicious intent? was the scarred individual moving whilst this was happening? there are numerous reasons why someone could have a scar, yet it’s good to consider some of these questions (not all will always be applicable of course as some scars are created without weapons/tools/objects (i.e. burns))
once you have that down, you then must consider how the injury was healed in order for it to become a scar. was the wound cleaned and properly tended to? was it left unattended for any amount of time? who tended to the wound, was it a doctor or sloppily patched up by someone inexperienced? did the individual with the scar tamper with it during the healing process? do they pick or scratch at it even now? all of this is important of getting down how exactly the scar would appear in its current state.
the final thing to note is who is being drawing with the scar. is the individual someone who retains scars or do theirs fade easy with time? how prominent would a scar show on their skin?
i know you were probably looking for more specific artistic advice on how to draw scars and i’m just speaking the obvious here, but there are so many different types and so many factors that go into drawing them that it is ultimately best to reference reality then work that into your own style that best fits the themes of the character and the scar’s creation. always remember, there is no right way to drawing scars!
