In the Original Hairspray there’s a scene where there’s a children’s edition of the Show, and Little Inez tries to try out, but she’s shooed out and told to come back on “Negro Day”.
I think that’s very interesting, and telling of something I’ve seen discussed; how black children aren’t actually children. As far as the producers of the Corny Collins Show are concerned Inez is not a child she’s a (forgive the use of the language of the movie) “negro” indistinguishable from the black adults
