i don’t wanna say the other cherrys weren’t but hailey!cherry sounded genuinely concerned about ponyboy’s wellbeing. ponyboy staring at the blank tv screen not even stirring when she mentions johnny or the sunset, scared her bad.

ponyboy told her that he didn’t like fighting and that he wasn’t as much of a tough guy as he pretends to be. he told cherry that he likes reading and movies. that he likes watching the sunset and watching the colors blur together.

and then roughly three weeks later cherrys warily watching a that same gentle hearted 14 yr boy wear a hundred and ten bruises. he’s covered in bruises from fighting a rumble that cherry begged him not to fight, that he still fought anyways because he wanted to; he felt he had to.

ponyboy’s sitting on his living room floor staring at a blank tv screen breathily shallowly. (shallow like the breaths you take when oxygen is running low and it takes every fiber of you’re just to keep breathing.)

cherrys scared that by the time ponyboy returns back to school she’s never see that gentle hearted kid again. instead it would be another kid that takes his place. a kid who’s tough, not scared of anything, who stops finding joy in the little things because he’s afraid of it all getting snatched away again.
