Hi I'm here to ask you about transitombs
THANK YOU. there’s this very cool thing that arose in the middle ages and became particularly preeminent in the last centuries of this period all around europe. the richest people would choose to make a statement about their condition as decaying beings and order expensive pieces of art (particularly sculptures in stone, though other materials and even paintings have existed) during their youth to have a luxurious tomb made by the time they kicked the bucket. these are, no joke, some of the most beautiful artworks i’ve had the pleasure of studying. take this transi of René de Chalon, at the Church of St. Étienne as an example.
the subject is depicted with utmost care in a glorious but melancholic pose, forever decaying.now this one i believe was the one i had the pleasure of seeing in person. it’s located in St. Peter’s church in Ireland and belongs to Sir Edmond Goldyng, depicted with his wife.
remember the middle ages were a moment of high mortality, superstition and a close relationship to the inevitability of death. it was all around medieval europe, they were constantly surrounded by it. and what did they do? turn it into art. i love transi and in particular transi tombs
