You could remember the moonlight shining down on your face as grass tickled your palms. Your eyes had been heavy but, you couldn’t find it in yourself to get up.
You could hear your brain screaming at you to go home, please go home. The night air just kept getting colder, and you could feel yourself begin to shiver. If it hadn’t been for the boy next to you, maybe you would have been cozy in bed.
   “I’m leaving.”
You swallowed hard, “Yeah, I should probably get going too.”
“You know that’s not what I meant.” Of course, you did.
Oikawa had been sitting next to you, the side of his hand just brushing yours. You couldn’t help but think he had looked beautiful that night. Radiant with a hint of sorrow in his eyes. You knew graduation would be difficult, but you didn’t realize it would be like this.
   “I’m going to Argentina.”
And with those words, you remember feeling as if your world was crashing down. As cliche as it sounds, Oikawa was your world. He was your best friend, if not more. You remember the feeling of your tongue going heavy in your mouth as you squeezed your eyes shut. You were hoping that when you opened them, things would be different. You would be back a few years prior, just starting high school. But the universe doesn’t work that way, and when you opened them, he was still staring at you with those wide, teary eyes.
But that was years ago. Years before, when you were terrified of your impending future. When you were convinced that you would never see your best friend again. Well, who were you kidding? You were a lot more than just friends.
And now you sat on the same hill under the same sky, the same boy next to you after years of strained contact. You didn’t even know if you would agree to see him when he texted you that he was back in town.Â
That was a lie, you knew you would always come back to him.
The night had been silent, neither of you knowing what to say. Neither of you wanting to go first.
“If you would have told me to stay, I would have.”
Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion, “What?’
“I would have stayed. All you had to do was ask me,” Oikawa’s voice was venerable. His hands seemed to shake as he scooted closer towards you.
“Oikawa,” he seemed to falter at the use of his last name, “it was your dream. I wasn’t going to stop you from doing it just because I wanted you here.”
“So you wanted me to stay?”
You finally looked over at him, clenching your jaw as your throat tightened up. “Of course I did.”
His clammy hands reached out to cup your cheeks, thumb sweeping over your jaw.
“I never stopped loving you. I always thought of you, wishing you were by my side instead of halfway across the world.” You had to tear your gaze away from him; it was all too intense. “My greatest regret was never telling you how much you meant to me.”
   “Tōru…”
“Please… Please, tell me you still want me.”
You licked your lips in contemplation, and in your hesitation, he took his answer.
“That’s okay. I understand.” No, he didn’t. His voice was strained, and you could see his chin wobbling. You hated that it was you who caused that. He had already begun to pull away by the time you looked back at him.
“Wait,” you rushed out, hand reaching for him desperately. It had been far too long without his touch.
“I want you. I’ve always wanted you.”
Your gazes met once more as his glossed over. He leaned into you, eyes falling shut as his hand cupped your face.
And with that, he pressed his lips to yours. It was a feeling you had imagined many times throughout your life; it was something that you had given up hope of ever feeling. But if you had a choice, you knew you would choose him every time.
