After being back for a week, I have thought a lot about my experience in D.C. attending the “Assault Weapons Ban” hearing. We have a serious issue in our nation with completely abandoning logical thinking in the wake of horrific incidents. Our society responds in a completely emotional, passion driven rage saying “we need to do something!” What we need to do, isn’t legislate all of the law-abiding citizens into felons. What we need to do, isn’t nationally recognize criminals on mass media for the terrible acts that they commit. And what we definitely don’t need to do, is take away the right of the people to defend themselves. Yes, self-defense against criminals, but also against government that tends to underhandedly take our essential liberties away. Our mission needs to be teaching others about firearms safety, stopping misinformation about firearms and their functionality, confront the issue with the lack of sanctity that is placed on life, and work on solutions to the mental health crisis in our nation.
