So the Author has written in the journals using a substitution cipher, as seen here in the bottom of the right page:

Now, Dipper's and Mabel's Guide to Mystery and Nonstop Fun has messages scattered all throughout it using a substitution cipher with those same exact symbols, just corresponding to different letters.

(this one is part of the message Dipper wrote a theme song for himself and sings it in the shower and yes I have memorized this code I am a sad little-)
