Gullane, 2018

Built when the area was once a salt marsh which gives name to the surroundings, the castle, to the left, dates from the late 16th century, the home of Patrick Levingtoun of Saltcoats, it is believed he killed a notorious wild boar in Gullane Woods in 1590 and was given the land here as a reward. A coat of arms is over a door in the ruined cottages to the right, which are believed to have been built from the stones from the castle when it became vacant, some time after 1790.
