Hdajk was happy to find a few remaining lemons close to the camp.
You could for sure call that a sour meal.
- Tomorrow I will take Gubok and the others hunting. Hopefully we will go to bed with full stomachs.
- I cross my fingers, Hdajk said, because lemons are not my favorite food.
As said as done, Rusa took Hdajk’s younger siblings hunting and was hoping to catch some grouse or deer.
But all they got was a couple of rabbits.
- I don’t know, they are too sweet to eat, Nobi protested.
- Not if you are hungry enough, Rusa said pragmatically, and it tastes better than lemons.
One rabbit is not much for a family of five. Nevertheless, that night they had rabbit soup, with a twist of lemon, and the kids didn’t go to bed hungry, to the parents big relief.
The next day Rusa came home empty handed.
- There was absolutely nothing. Not even a thrush. Maybe your brother Gubok could spare some dried meat, he mentioned yesterday that he had some.
- Okay, I will ask him, Hdajk said reluctantly, but I don’t like to bother my siblings, they can merely manage themselves these days. In this weather there might be snow in the mountains, so I will probably not be back before darkness, the path up to his camp might be icy.
- Sister, what are you doing here? And in this weather?
Hdajk explained the problem to Gubok.
- I will give you what I have, but it’s not much, maybe just three meals for one man. I’m sorry I can’t help. This winter has been terrible for everyone.
- Well at least the kids wont be hungry, that’s the most important. Rusa and I will manage. For now. Our hunting luck must turn at some point.
- Let’s hope so sister. Let’s hope so.
