It became a wonderful evening. The unmistakable smell of grilled meat made them all dizzy with anticipation.

- I can’t wait! Boui said Don’t you think it’s ready?

- Well, I believe it’s done Dubi said. Let’s eat! Children! 

- Yum! Yum! Yum! Noor and Eira finished their plates before the others even started.

Everybody waited in line to get their meat, something most of them hadn’t had for weeks.

Attracted by the tantalizing smell, even strangers came to ask for something to eat, and Toidr didn’t like it much.

- You don’t belong to our family! he said manly.

- Toidr, in this family we treat all strangers with respect. Give her a plate of food, and be grateful that we can share food with strangers.

Afterwords there was singing and dancing.

- I don’t know how you can dance now after all that food! Ob’hi sighed.

- Come on Ob’hi! Have some fun!

Hours later, tired and full, Hdajk and Rusa went to their cave to have some sleep.

- Now tell me, what happened there in Forgotten Hollow? What took you so long?

- Oh Hdajk, that place is grim. Really grim.

The next weeks were a continuous struggle. Sanie and the other youngsters in the family, who didn’t have children to feed, tried to help Hdajk and the family, but some days there was simply nothing to share.

Koryi, Dubis partner, had died last winter and left her with three children to take care of alone. That was really difficult, even under normal circumstances.

In Boui’s houshold things weren’t much easier, even though the children were a bit older. With Ob’hi’s boyfriend Uykjl, there were now four teenagers to feed (and we all know that teenagers need more food than grown men), and even if they all tried to hunt and help out, they were inexperienced.

Some days Hdajk and the family ate insects and grass. And other days nothing.

The hunger made everybody a bit on the edge, and unusually tired. 

Even Hdajk started napping on the middle of the day.

While Ruse was always on attention and lookout for game, and walked further and further away from the camp. Unfortunately without much luck.

It was a beautiful night at Rock my Soul and the boys were ready to party!

The girls were already on the dance floor.

There was mingling...

Stunning performances...

Bush activities...

- Hey Efhag! someone whispered, Isn’t that your sister over there with that foreigner?

- I'll kill him! Efhag hissed, but was firmly interrupted by his older sister.

- No, you are not! Boui said. Don’t you remember what father said? Hdajk have the right to decide for herself. Besides, you are smarter than that.

- You are right sis, Efhag nodded. I am.

The days went by, but Oyw still wanted to be left alone. He was heartbroken.

The children all tried to cheer him up, without much luck.

Rusa moved in and also tried to raise Oyw’s spirit, but wasn’t successful either.

Everyone could see that his physical health was gradually deteriorating. He spent most of the day sleeping.

And in the night they could see him wandering around, like he was searching for something or someone.

Often he was heard mumbling and talking to himself or to someone only he could see.

One early morning they found him lying on the ground.

- Oh no, oh no, oh no! Father!! Wake up!!

- Boui!! Dubi!! Help!! He won’t wake up!

- Hdajk, Boui said softly, he is not going to wake up. He has left us.

- Noooo! Hdajk didn’t want to believe it.

- What are we going to do now? How are we going to continue without him?

- I don’t know Hdajk, Dubi said, I guess we just have to.

- We can’t let him lie here in the sun. Boui was always the practical one.

- Is father sleeping? Gubok asked.

- No, Hdajk sobbed. His spirit has left us. He is dead.

- We will put him in one of the caves for now, and then bury him later next to your mother. They should be together now.

- We already are, the wind whispered.

- Sorry father, Boui hurried to say, that was a bad choice of words. We know you are a proud man, but now that your hair is white and your strength is redused, we don’t want you to go hunting alone. That’s why we thought it was a good idea for our brothers to accompany you.

- And don’t forget that you can teach them a thing or two about hunting. I’m sure your grandchildren would love to join too. That would be very exciting for them!

- He he, I know some tricks about hunting, don’t I, Oyw smiled.

- You sure do father!

The next week the boys were ready for a hunt. A new acquaintance of Koryi, Rusa, was also present. He came from a place far to the east (or was it north?). Oyw and the others met him for the first time. He talked a bit strange, but understandable, and also brought with him new technology - a bow and arrows. Most of the guys were not that impressed, it looked very flimsy, and it was unclear to them if, and how, it would even work.

It did not take long before the first deer were observed.

- There! Just in front of us, Oyw whispered.

The hunting team was not impressively well organized.

- Meshaloob Klyg! I almost had him!!

But then Rusa got a well-aimed shot.

- Ooh Be Gah!! That arrow went very fast and very long! Klyg was divided between jealousy and admiration.

- Oh Boui, I’m so nervous! Thank you for being here.

- I understand sis, but really, I just remember Ka’he as a very friendly person, she was always so kind with me. Teaching me about plants and stuff. And about cleaning.

- Cleaning?

- Yeah, I seem to have forgotten most of it, haven’t I? My camp is a mess. But you know, four kids ... Oh here she is! Welcome Ka’he!

- Hello Ka’he. I’m Dubi.

- Dubi...

- I’m sorry about the mess.

- Mess?  Ka’he’s eyes were filled with tears.

- Boui just told me that you are such a neat person, Dubi knew she was just babbling, but couldn’t stop herself. And the camp is a total mess. You know, after mother died things have been a bit disorganized. I hope you don’t mind too much.

- I don’t mind at all. It’s you I came to see...

They had some food, and talked about this and that, about the children and grandchildren, about herbs and plants, about hunting rabbits and the hot weather this summer. But some questions were not asked, and some things were not discussed. Until it was time for Ka’he to leave.

- I just want to know one thing, Dubi’s voice was thick. Why didn’t you take me with you? Didn’t you care about me?

- Oh, my darling one. I cared about you so much, more than my own life. That’s why I left you. Can you lift the mountain? Can you stop the rain? No, and in the same manner I couldn’t take care of you. I couldn’t take care of myself either. You have to remember, I knew them! I knew 'kny and Oyw very well. I knew they would care for you, and love you. In fact, they already did. I just had to leave to find myself again. And then later, I thought it best if you just forgot about me.

- I didn’t.

- I know. And now I can see it was a big mistake. But believe me; I never stopped thinking about you. I learned about every little step you took in life. When you lost your front teeth, when you caught your first fish, when you started to bleed, when you met Koryi, when you had the twins. I knew everything!

- But how?!

- Shanga Baba told me. I’m convinced that ‘kny told her every little detail, knowing that I would learn about it. And I love her for that. And for taking so incredibly good care of you.

- I miss her so much!

- So do I, darling. So do I.

- Okay, the first thing we need to do is make sure father takes a bath. I will take on that task, Boui said firmly. Dubi, can you get the kids to help you clean up here, and Hdajk, maybe you can collect wood and fruit? 

- Sure! Hdajk nodded.

- When that is done we need to talk about what to do. We can’t have it that Hdajk should carry all this on her shoulders, don’t you agree Dubi?

- Absolutely!

- Come on now, father! I’ve filled the bathtub for you. You really need a bath. Badly. What would mother think if she saw you like this!?

That seemed to do the trick. The water turned black, but the stench that had surrounded Oyw slowly disappeared.

The toddlers were next.

And the camp itself.

Finally it was time to sit down to discuss what to do.

- Hdajk will need assistance in the camp and with the kids, but most importantly we need someone to take care of father. We should ask Won, Efhag and Klyg if they can help out.

- Take care of! I DON’T WANT TO BE TAKEN CARE OF!! I DON’T WANT A BABYSITTER! I can take care of myself!! Oyw was very upset with his daughters.
