So, I’ve recently returned to tumblr thanks to coincidentally remembering I still had Gyakuten 4koma to translate and share (even if I’m not the only blog doing it), and well, I figured I might as well use it to catch my followers’ attention.
Aside from my occasional misadventures in fanfiction, I realize I really don’t have much to do on this blog. Much of my original intention was to work on the Gyakuten Saiban vs Ace Attorney project on my main blog, but since that hit so many snags and led me to question how I would continue, I decided to put my main blog on a semi-permanent hiatus, with the hope that I’d eventually be able to return to it one way or another.
Well, now I’ve come back around full circle and feel ready to rejoin the Ace Attorney fandom once more. It’s been a very turbulent path I’ve taken, but I think I have the FF7 Remake reigniting my love for nostalgic pieces of my youth, and I was bound to make a return trip to these blogs.
That said, I do wonder if anyone is still interested in what I have to say or share. Should I reopen the main blog and renew the GSvsAA project? I’m happy to ask for volunteers to join me in digging through those masses of text scripts. Maybe eventually I will be able to start on the graphical differences too.
Of course, that means I’ll have to take quite a bit of time cleaning up my main blog of old and outdated reblogs that I don’t need cluttering it up, but hey, at least I’m motivated again to do something! Either way, that was a job that I was planning to do all this time anyway, but life got in the way as always...
Don’t mind the name on my main blog, it was a fun thought experiment back when I was thinking up an AA/Yakuza crossover and I still sometimes dream up some things, but it’s still primarily an AA blog.

So, uh... hey, guys. Sorry for the delays. I just remembered I had some cool stuff to share and today seems like a good enough day to drop by again.
Everyone knows I have only the most impeccable timing by being absent when I need to be.
Jokes aside, it's kinda awkward of an update post this time because I bring both good news and bad news.
The bad news is: I hate this site and how it sucks when I or anyone looking at my blog wants to find old archive posts. I hate this site even more now that they've changed the formatting and suddenly I can't just copy paste from the text files I've been using for this blog's project.
So I wanna move, but my blogspot site hasn't been updated in a couple years by now. I still need to figure out how I'm gonna port over this entire blog's archives, so my apologies that I don't have any particular updates on this, despite already having the next part ready. God, I hate tumblr.
BUT the good news is: I've updated my Patreon Page. I've decided to take off the translation commissions since not many people would be coming to me for bulk translations and stuff anyway, and definitely not for $3-5 a post. Instead, I want to experiment with writing commissions. I have an original story in the works, inspired by my childhood imagination, where I plan to make it a fan collaboration as well. If people are willing to donate, I will reserve special rights to ya'll to help contribute to this story.
I'm still putting things together atm, but the brief plot synopsis is thus:
A pair of Japanese international students arrive to meet their host living in a small town near San Francisco and will be staying with her for the entirety of their university stay. However, their simple introduction to American life is cut short when a puzzling series of paranormal murders take place wherever they go. As it turns out, their host is a specialized Arbiter of Death - one who judges the most dangerous, corrupted souls of the recently deceased - and this is business as usual for her. However, not everything seems to be going as it should in the Underworld. And to top it all off, she has to be caretaker for a family of primordial Godlike alien dogs who bring her no end of frustrations.
Aside from the main cast, some key plot points, and major themes being set in stone already, the rest of the story is open to readers to decide what direction it may take, what mysteries may develop over its course, and what characters, settings, and other concepts will appear. Please understand, though, that I won't be taking requests to put official or copyrighted content from real franchises, so don't ask for a Batman-meets-Phoenix-Wright crossover or anything. I'm technically making money off of this and I don't want to be sued.
I will be posting the prologue chapter to this on my AO3 shortly. Chapter 1 is in the works and isn't open to requests, but we'll see for later chapters.
In the meantime, I will try to update my blogspot site to get it ready, so I can return to my main project.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Is Better Than I Expected and I Already Expected Greatness
I got the Switch version and it blew my effin' mind seeing Asogi talk to me about rotating joysticks. (Yes, I know the 3DS also had a rotating joystick, but only one, and it's honestly a bit stiff compared to the Switch.) My, how far we've come.
AND THE VOICE ACTING IS PHENOMENAL, I CANNOT GET OVER THIS. Tired myself out voicing every character, though, lol. As always, this game isn't fully voice acted, but the moments where they are, are SPOT ON.
Ahem. As promised in my previous post, I will go ahead and explore localization differences with DGS vs TGAA, but due to spoilers, I'll be hosting them on my game react blog @rubiaryuplays. Please be warned that there will be HEAVY spoilers. I hide none of my reactions there and the last I updated that blog was the last time I finished DGS2 a few months ago. Also, since it's not quite as organized as this blog, the entries are going to be a little more chaotic.
Since I don't have the complete scripts of these games - and even when I do get them, I will NOT be sharing them with anyone until a few months down the line - I will only be going through some things I notice at first glance. Since this is technically my second (third, really) playthrough of the games, I'll deliberately skip unneeded dialogue to get through things faster. I'll eventually get back to those I missed later and post them on here in organized fashion.
As for GS4, I actually have the notes for the next parts saved on my computer, but I still need to give it another proofread and QC since I usually have to research a few things after taking my initial notes. I'll see if I can squeeze in some of that in-between my TGAAC episode posts.

I’ve gone back to add a few more entries to the last project update too (at least the lack of updates makes it easier to find those posts), so please check it out if you’d like. Now, I can finally move on into the infamous flashback case of this game.

As expected, the judge isn't that dumb in the original script. Kyouya here expresses a bit of disdain for "this kind of thing" and the judge asks what he means.
Sad to say, Naruhodo doesn't comment on any "American" or foreign accent he may have. Interestingly, his voice actor in all the promotional materials does speak with a distinct style that easily distinguishes him from his fellow Japanese, even if it isn't a different accent or dialect. It's a very subtle difference in how he intonates, I think. (If anything it's all the more disappointing that the US locale team didn't bring in a voice actor with a "Euro-rock" accent for Klavier in DD. They're the ones who came up with it! Maybe just couldn't get someone else for some reason?)

Haha, it's one of those things that can't be translated well, but Kyouya speaks to the detective in a way that reminds me of how stereotypical celebs talk down to their backstage staff. So Itonoko comments about how "This is the first time anyone's called on me like that."

Aw, Itonoko trying to speak in scientific terms feels like a kid trying to learn words. He ends it with "something-marete" as if trying to cite the doctor, so the judge corrects him with "Was it spoiled, perhaps?" By that, I mean that it was adversely affected.

In JP, his motto is the old Japanese idiom of knocking on a bridge before crossing it; aka be super cautious. The way it's written in English here, though, makes it sound like "Oh, yeah, I'd practice shooting in a hospital."

It has been 5 days since TGAAC was announced and I just realized
A lot of characters in this localized version keep the same names as their source for once. It makes sense given their respective locations. But in regards to this blog's Gyakuten Saiban vs Ace Attorney project, I regularly distinguish between the source and localized scripts by referring to the characters' respective names. This will be a little more troublesome if the name is the exact same.
I do not want to have to write "Well, in the source..." for another million times if I can avoid it, so I have a proposal for you all.
Should I just deal with it and write "[Name] JP" and "[Name] EN" or should I start coming up with creative nicknames? I'm gonna go entirely freelance with them, but for everyone's sake, at least I won't distinguish between "Naruhodo" and "Naruhodou", for example.
It may be a little ways down the line until I get into DGSvsTGAA, but I'm definitely gonna preorder this bundle as soon as I can. They even included the "Ryunosuke's 7 Deadly Sins" promos, lol.
Please excuse the awkward upload schedule. I've been playing DGS2 nonstop the past few days and it's destroyed my sleep schedule.
Look, guys! I’m being productive again! Hooray, it feels exhausting just as I remember it did!
As done before, every post I make will contain differences between the source Japanese and localized English versions of the same game, as well as further details about them, up to the following “To be continued...” screens and eventually the ending credits. As always, there are so many ways the localization can dress up certain lines in the original script to make them into jokes or at least more colorful, so I’m not going to pick out every one. It would take us an eternity longer than my hiatuses to finish otherwise.
To think it took a freakin’ indie game that's like Mafia but with astronauts and tasks to bring me back to the Ace Attorney community and back to my blog’s roots. Is this what they mean by “Circle of Life”? All I know is that I’m constantly running around in circles, both metaphorically and literally.

In the third box, "ウラ返ってる" from 裏返る (uragaeru) in this context is translated fairly, though it specifically refers to a "crack in falsetto" kind of squeak or screech. (Yes, squeaky Apollo.) Now, it's interesting to note uragaeru in a different context can also mean "to double-cross". To be fair, it's also a common phrase, like being "betrayed" by your own cracking voice, but the foreshadowing power...
In the fourth box, yes, they changed the name puns to suit the localized name. Kirihito (Kristoph) is just saying what a "surprise" it is for his first trial to be a murder case.

I just love this line from Apollo. Perfect timing and delivery. Odoroki's line is good too, though comes off as a tad more innocent: "I-It's fine. When it comes to vocal training, even Sensei can't beat me!" Though I have to say the image of Kristoph screaming during voice training is too funny to pass up.

I may have mentioned it before, but I'll make a note here that the Hobohodo meme has its own version in the JP fandom: "ピアニート" (piani-to or pia-NEET), which is portmanteau of pianist and NEET, the most famous of Japanese government welfare programs for the unemployed. It's also slang for "hobo".

Many of you already know, but just in case: The localizers never censored Nick's fave drink. It was the JP devs who had to work with such censors back home, but eventually they just kept it as a running gag to put non-alcoholic fruit juices in fancy wine bottles. It wasn't until SoJ when the devs could get away with featuring a bit of alcohol. Their previous game was slapped with a CERO-C (15+) due to graphic images, so Eshiro and co. were pleasantly surprised to see SoJ get the classic CERO-B (12+) again.
Not to mention, very expensive high-quality fancy fruit juices do exist in Japan and can cost way more than your usual middle-grade wines. Japan and their fancy fruit culture and all. (I forget exactly, but I recall there were plenty of group pictures of the devs on their blogs and Twitters over the years where someone had gotten them fancy bottles of fruit juice as Christmas gifts. The memes live on.)

The differences here are subtle enough that I hesitated on including this, but Kirihito straight-up calls out Odoroki:

Now that I find this dialogue again, it's even deeper than I'd ever thought. In both JP and EN, Phoenix's line works just as well as the other despite having different double entendres. In EN, he makes a pun between the poker hands and people's hands; while in JP, the term used is "yaku", which is normally used to refer to hands in a card/mahjong game, but in more general cases, it means "role" or "responsibility". Just making a note here on how well Olga's lines are written. They really make it obvious that she's "not a native speaker" (for now). While in EN, they just made her English a little broken, in JP, she speaks in a very stiff and formal Japanese, as she is a waitress, but also on the occasion can sound a little off to a native speaker without being broken, per se. She also has a distinct "watashi" among a few other common words that are written in katakana to show a sort of accent.

Okay, everyone knows how bad/obvious/cringe the name puns can be in Khura'in or certain ones from AAI, but please, does anyone not remember "Badgai" here? (Tbf, I forgot too, so I'm not one to talk...)
Btw, his original name is "Narazumo", literally "ruffian", and it's completely in katakana, which makes me think it's a codename or alias. She also specifies that he was a "gangster", not yakuza as we'd assume. Japanese gangs are a bit closer to gangs that we know of in the West, especially that they're more known for foreign influence to their styles than the much more traditional yakuza.
Also, I'm disappointed there was no Odoroki pun here. Sure, she doesn't know him, so it wouldn't make sense, but still a missed opportunity. Also also, she actually talks to the rest of the court when she says "you", so she's selling photos of Apollo's freakout to everyone. Classy...

This entire conversation is just a joke on how "locket" and "rocket" are written the same way in Japanese, and I'm surprised how well it still works in English.
To clarify, Kirihito's line at the end is a bit different:

It's conversations like this that make me wonder if characters can actually hear what the MC is saying/whispering or if they're breaking the 4th wall to hear their thoughts. Here, it's even more ambiguous in JP than the usual between Nick and Maya in prior games. Or are they suggesting that even when Apollo is thinking, he's still loud?

I don't usually include entries for examples where the localizers dress up the text from the original, but this one here really bugs me. I'm not sure if it's a reference to some classic film or just a tip of the hat to classic American court drama movies in general.

As funny as that capitalist line is, it's not found in the source, sorry, guys. Her text in Japanese is very formal, so it takes an extra box just to complete her sentence.
Also, worth to note that Odoroki here mentions yen and dollars, but not rubles, despite the restaurant being Russian-themed. Whether it's writer oversight or just Odoroki being uncultured will remain a mystery.
Lastly, Apollo's last line here makes him seem quite confident, but in the original, he seems just as confused as ever. This is made clearer when Apollo later presses the new statement.

So what did the flaming
defendant do next?
Oh my God, as soon as I saw that "異議がある" (igi ga aru) my mind flashed back to those ridiculous Google Translated trailers of Gyakuten Saiban & Kenji on Nico Douga. Imagine if the devs at the time decided to play with Google Translate to see how "異議あり!" would look after switching it from Japanese to English and back. It would be one of the biggest brain plays by a game developer ever... which probably means it wasn't how it went, but it's fun to think about.
Anyway, I also like this snippet of dialogue for the judge's "flaming defendant", clearly alluding to "Phoenix" Wright. In JP, the bit about setting fire to his heart is just a common idiom in the first place, but who knows? “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney” had been selling fast in the West, so they could have been inspired.

It's at this point when Olga's cover is blown, and in JP, it's more obvious because she stammers between using "atashi" vs "watashi". It's not very common to hear beginner Japanese students refer to themselves as the cutesy "atashi", though one who's a bit more well versed in the language or in anime may pick up on it.

It's this quiet moment between the two of them that really parallels with how Mia used to talk with Phoenix, and it's beautifully poetic. And I'd like to note that even Phoenix's speech pattern throughout this convo is quite reminiscent of how Mia talked, but with a bit of Phoenix's own style. Though in that last line, he could possibly have meant Mia, but more likely meant a certain someone with a similar power to Apollo. Ya'll know who I mean, (W)right?

The translation here is close enough, really, but Odoroki specifically describes it as the "intensity" of his voice and it's only the best answer.
