How to dip your π¦Ά into Open Source
Contributing to Open Source projects can be a valuable experience for beginner programmers. It can help you learn new skills, build your portfolio, make connections, make a difference, and gain recognition for your work.
But... how do I start? Well here's an option to get you started β
Google's Summer of Code (GSoC) is an online mentorship program that matches beginner contributors to open source software development with mentors from open source projects β
GSoC takes place every year mid January with registration to be a contributor usually opening around mid March. Unfortunately for this year (2023) the application deadline is tomorrow γ· (April 4)
However! There are so many open source projects available this year so I highly encourage you to try to apply even if its past April 4 you might get lucky π
The key to getting accepted by an org is to interact with their developer community and keep in contact with the orgs mentors. This is why I believe even if they application period has ended if you join the orgs online communication app and involve yourself in the community and keep sharing your skills and expertise with them you will still have a good chance of being able to join!
Best of luck! (γ₯qββΏβΏβq)γ₯
(even if it doesn't work out this year there will always be the next and the next and the next... I recommend checking out the archive for how the previous years went to better prepare yourself to jump on this opportunity next year!!)
Because I did not know about narcissistic abuse, about the common-ness of pathological lying, about the rampancy of gaslighting - how so many men are deceivers, how there are so many abusers, I will be forever scarred, even if the wound becomes less visible with time.
I guess I want to help any and everyone who might be preyed upon to avoid that same fate.
(some tags removed due to a campaign by ASPD/NPD tumblr accounts to target my content - with some valid critiques I was glad to read - but also a fair amount of harassment and misreads on their part)
My mentors are good - great even but...why would they think I can do python when I've made it abundantly clear I know anything but? πππ I don't want to fail but I feel kind of set up.

Google Summer of Code kick-off
The list of accepted GSoC particpants has been published and students have been notified of their status. Congratulations to Vinay Varma, Emily Thomas, and Jaideep Seth on being selected! We're glad to have you with us and look forward to collaborating with you throughout the summer.
On behalf of all OpenWorm contributors, I offer a sincere thanks to all those who submitted a proposal: your enthusiasm for OpenWorm and for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) shone through beautifully. To those who were not accepted this year, especially if this is your first time contributing to FOSS, please continue your involvement in free software and in open science: there are so many problems out there, and they become so much more achievable when we work together.
Huddle up like the 1998 Gophers! Join us at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium for the final exhibition game before the real thing. Minnesota takes on Kansas State Friday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.
Friendly reminder to any university students out there that Google Summer of Code applications are open until April 3rd!!!
