What I was doing last week. (More stuff with my fellowship)
It's pretty neat. I was working specifically with Nat Robinson for Juhudi Kilimo, which is a micro finance company that instead of providing straight funding will provide things like high-yield dairy cows or solar tech, or other helpful farming things, and then the loan acts as its own collateral. They also provide support to train you how to most effectively use whatever you got for your loan.
This Week in Social Entrepreneurship: Applications open for the Global Social Benefit Incubator's 2013 cohort and students learn what it'll take to build a New Economy
Santa Clara University’s Global Social Benefit Incubator (GSBI) for the 2013 cohort is accepting applications through July 15th. GSBI Online helps early-stage social enterprises that have the potential to create significant social impact through financially sustainable operations. Each accepted entrepreneur will be guided by two mentors who will provide hands-on assistance: an experienced Silicon Valley corporate-level executive, and a local in-country executive. Successful participants will graduate armed with a fundable plan for scaling their organization, including a business-plan summary presentation, an “elevator pitch,” and a one-year operating plan.
reRoute: Building Youth and Student Power for a New Economy, brought to you by the New Economics Institute, will bring together a diverse new generation of professionals from across the U.S. and Canada to share strategies, tools, and stories about creating a solidarity economy from the ground up in our communities and on our campuses. Join a diverse group of young professionals as they converge in NYC between July 19th and 21st. Registration is “pay what you can" through July 5th.
The 15th annual UK Social Enterprise Awards are now open. This year there are 10 categories, some of which are new, plus an award that recognizes five individual champions of the sector. The Social Enterprise Awards celebrate the pioneering work of Britain’s social enterprise movement, businesses that are regenerating communities and changing lives. All 10 categories are open to social enterprises, while some are also open to charities. Nominations are due by August 6th and the awards ceremony will be November 27th in London.
This is a really special opportunity for ladies in Nairobi, Kenya. On July 1st, join Young Women Social Entrepreneurs for some inspiration at the "How She Does It" Dinner with June Gachui, one of the few intellectual property lawyers in Kenya who has opted to specialize in entertainment and the creative industries. This is an amazing chance to grab some dinner with June and gain insight into your career path from an overwhelmingly successful woman. And don't forget to bring your old clothes to contribute to the ongoing clothing drive for Heshima Kenya.
