Grocon facing criminal charges over fatal wall collapse in Melbourne
Australia’s largest privately-owned construction company, Grocon, has been charged over a fatal wall collapse in Melbourne. Bridget Jones,18, her brother Alexander,19, and French national Dr Marie-Faith Fiawoo were killed when a brick wall collapsed on top of them in high winds on Swanston Street in Melbourne’s CBD in March 2013. The wall was on a Grocon building site.

On Friday, Justice Anthony Cavanough found the union to be in contempt of court for violating an injunction obtained by Grocon outside the Myer Emporium site in late August last year.
Grocon claims to have suffered a loss of $500,00 per day over the blockade and according to The Age is claiming $10million in damages.
A hearing on the penalty costs is scheduled for May 28

A minor victory for the rule of law, common decency and the public in general, who have been held to ransom by union bullies in Melbourne for the past week. I hope that Daniel Grollo remains resilient, that Australians see militant unions for what they are and that the Coalition is elected to reinstate the ABCC. Unions already have the benefit of a system that is skewed ridiculously in their favour. The least they can do is work within that system.
