Staring at his drink, wishing there was something in it that would soothe his nerves wasnât going to make it so â Chad knew that. He also knew that if he took that step, made it over to the bar and asked for something strong to go along with his soda for the evening, there wouldnât be any stopping. He had promised himself, no scenes this evening. Even if it killed him â and fuck did it feel as though it was killing him â he was going to leave this event sober and he was going to go know how he got home that evening, simple as that. There were far too many people in attendance to let himself get sloppy and more importantly, he just didnât want to. Well, he did, in a way. He wanted to drink, that was for sure. He just didnât want the consequences that came along with the drinking. Though he supposed that was what everyone wanted when they had a problem.
He was pulled out of his own ridiculous self-pity as he finally realized that he was no longer alone in his corner. âOh, good evening. I was just â I was considering heading over to the table and browsing what was up for auction, but I wanted to let everyone else have a look first. Itâs always awkward when there are too many people at the table and then you feel this unspoken rush to move on and let others get a look in at the items, you know?â

Jesus took a sip of champagne and made a small face. People willingly drank this? He eyed the deceptively light drink in its fragile glass and wondered how anyone justified paying so much for something that tasted like vinegar and seltzer water.
But someone was approaching so he quickly tried to school his features like he was enjoying himself and not privately thinking that rich people were fucking insane. At least not having a car tonight meant he hadnât had to deal with el parking.Â
âI donât think Iâve been anywhere this fancy since senior prom. Definitely wouldâve had more fun there if thereâd been free booze though.â
âHeeey, Cordelia.â He said, attempting to smile even though he had blood on his teeth and one hand cupping his nose. He felt a little dizzy but that was probably the blood loss. Honestly he wasnât entirely sure, but it wasnât often that he ran face-first into a wall. Wasnât often Jesus got dressed up so fancy, either.
Specks of blood had gotten on his white shirt. Thatâd be a bitch to get out later. Maybe he could get Cor to help him with that, too. She knew loads, she was a nurse. âDo you have some tampons I could borrow, for my nose? Also, how do you know the signs of a concussion?â

âIâm surprised you donât already have one of these,â Winifred greeted Brandon, holding out one of two flutes of champagne sheâd picked from passing servers. âI know youâre PD and all but a fundraiser doesnât really strike me as your type of event.â Not that it was her type of event either, not anymore, but The Red Apple as auctioning off dining experiences and, beyond that, as a Snow, there was an expectation to show face. âEnjoying yourself?â Winifred wasnât having the worst time. These events, though different for her now, were good for networking and building up those alliances sheâd worked so hard to put together in the first place.Â
It was a rather odd twist of events, forcing Luke to attend something rather than being the one forced. However, as reluctant as Gio was to participate in functions with many people, he rather enjoyed auctions. The rush of the sale was just enough to get him excited without overwhelming him. He could practically hear his friend calling him a nerd as he quickly shook the thought away. Even if that werenât the case, it would do them both good to get out of their self-isolations, even if that felt weird for him to believe given his general aversion to going out in general. Following the festival, he had been on edge. He could admit that, and her was certain Luke was feeling the same. Maybe being out with other people, at another event, and nothing absolutely terrible happening would do them some good. Or it would make everything a million times worse. Either way, they were there and there was no changing that.
Seeing a somewhat familiar face â Lukeâs own sister in fact â Gio let out a sigh. The point of the evening was to engage in the auction, yes, but there was also the side goal of actually engaging in human interaction. So, with sound resolve, the man approached her, clearing his throat slightly then holding out his hand to the woman as he tried his best to offer a smile he hoped didnât so quickly show how uncomfortable he still was. âDanielle, correct?â @violentgallowsâ

âFancy running into you here.â Granted Danielle didnât hold an invitation, per say, but it didnât stop her from finding a way inside with Tylerâs jacket over her shoulders while her bare legs were clearly under dressed for such an occasion. But so much money in one room left her with an itch that needed to be scratched, even she had to think about keeping her hands to herself rather than get trapped in here with too many people. Rosie was a breath of fresh air, needing to alleviate some of the pressure to slip a watch off someoneâs wrist or snag something that would pay her rent for the month off someoneâs neck. âWhat are your thoughts on this whole thing?â She gestured towards the event on a whole, because it looked good but Danielle didnât believe that much of this would make itâs way to the people that actually needed as much as it was meant to let the rich get off from feeling too much guilt over the state of the less fortunate. âPart of me wonders what the big appeal was in the first place but then again, it got me here so,â she trailed off with a shrug and a small smile as she glanced at the other.

âOkay, wait, hold on a second,â Cordelia held up her hand, taking a dramatic breath, âwho said you were allowed to look so beautiful? Cosette ââ for real, what the hell, you look amazing,â she greeted the younger woman with a bright smile, âIâm so glad you ended up coming. Have you gotten anything to eat or drink yet?â Already in full hostess mode, despite not even hosting it, though, her family was helping put it on. âIâll probably be stuck on your dress for a second, just so you know ââ really, it looks great.â
Settling down an empty glass of wine in front of her, Melissa traced the raised text of the card. The other attendees at the table were too preoccupied getting drunk themselves to notice her wavering focus. She had just finished with the 'e' in raffle when the waiter returned to give her the third glass of wine for the evening. She gave him the tip she had wrestled out of her wallet earlier when everything hadn't felt so removed, and proceeded to resume her tracing. Melissa had just gotten started with the second 'n' in winners when an unbelievably chipper voice picked up over the speakers.
âLadies and gentlemen, the raffle winners are about to be announced.âÂ
The raffle. She looked down at her raffle number. Sheâd forgotten to put hers into the drawing when she arrived. Or maybe she hadnât wanted to. She canât remember. She took another sip of her wine and just stared at the numbered paper, thinking that it would end up in a box somewhere after this â crumpled up and forgotten.Â
Her eyes tried to focus on the stage, where a blonde in a long black dress approached the mic. She greeted the guests with such a big, bright smile, Melissa wondered whether her face hurt and considered covering her eyes. But she didnât, because the blonde is like flashing light, twirling on the stage like Vanna White â captivating in a way that wouldnât let her look away.Â
The woman sauntered over to the large glass bowl that sat on a stand, filled to the brim with papers of hopeful individuals looking to win some coveted item or experience or another. Melissa looked around the ballroom again, eyes sluggishly trailing over the evening gowns and tuxedos and crystal chandeliers. She wondered at how much this all cost them. How much they were shelling out in the name of charity? She was skeptical (she always was), of how much of the funds raised would actually find its way to the right people. She supposed it didnât matter; not if people won something out of it, right?
Dragging her gaze back to the stage, she watched as the woman picked out a piece paper from the bowl, unfolding it and speaking cheerily into the microphone, âand our first winner of the night is âââ
