The self-title debut album by the Foo Fighters was released on 26 June 1995.
Written and recorded by Dave Grohl just 6 months after the death of Kurt Cobain and the end of Nirvana, Grohl recorded the songs as "some sort of cathartic therapy," with the only other performer on the album being Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs) who played guitar on "X-Static." Grohl chose the name Foo Fighters hoping to convey the sense of a full group (and then brought on musicians to tour).
Foo Fighters was a critical and commercial success, peaking at #23 in the US and selling nearly 1.5 million copies. It was nominated for the Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammy Awards (which went to Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York).
