i love the idea that he hates having people around him (i'm guessing it's because of his post-war anxiety), but he doesn't mind at all when his temporary wife comes to see him. in fact, he secretly loves it and is always happy when she's there, even if he'd rather die than admit it out loud. he just acts all stoic while internally he's like, please stay a little longer.

AW and sometimes she wakes up, terrified from her nightmare only to realize she’s safe in his arms.

i’d say there are a few inspirations behind it. there’s sort of an anastasia influence with the whole “lost princess” idea and the possibility of people trying to claim or manipulate that identity. that whole atmosphere of a hidden royal heritage definitely played a part in the vibe. another big inspiration was a book called “The Work of Art” by Mimi Matthews, where a retired and injured captain marries a young woman to protect her from a very shady stalker situation. that dynamic of protection, convenience marriage, and a wounded soldier trying to do the right thing really stuck with me. and then there’s Anne of Green Gables, mostly for the atmosphere. the meadows, the countryside, the soft cottage-core life… all of that influenced the setting and the tone of the story a lot hehehe.

but the overall plot is mostly my own mix of ideas. it centers around eren rescuing mikasa, then eventually marrying her, and the two of them trying to build a quiet life together while both of them believe the marriage will eventually come to an end. also, an important detail: mikasa is still in danger. there are royal loyalists who might try to use her as a political symbol, and there are also anti-royal factions who would prefer that the last princess simply disappear. so her existence alone creates tension. at its core though, the story is really about eren and mikasa healing together. mikasa is recovering from her captivity and the abuse she endured from her former fiancé, and eren is carrying all the trauma and guilt left behind by the war. so beneath the politics and the arranged marriage plot, it’s really about two very hurt people slowly finding peace with each other.

WE HAVEN’T and this is such a great ask!

after the war, eren is basically shattered. more than half of the men under his command died, and even though everyone praises him as a hero because of his bravery and leadership, he doesn’t feel like one at all. if anything, he feels like the opposite. to him, all he can see when people celebrate him is the number of men who never came back. so while the public calls him a hero, he is convinced he didn’t deserve the praise, that the cost was far too high.

for the next two years, he has only one real purpose left: finding mikasa and that’s not just because of duty. it’s also because of the promise he made to her father.

mikasa’s father (the prince) died during a rescue mission led by eren. the plan was to attack a prison camp and free him, but the operation went wrong. the camp was attacked, the rescue failed, and the prince was killed during the chaos. 💔 so for eren, that moment becomes another wound added to everything he’s already carrying. not only did he lose men under his command, but the very person he was trying to save also died in an operation he led. which means that when eren finally finds mikasa years later, his sense of responsibility toward her is enormous. he feels like he owes her something he can never fully repay.
