Marcia’s house was too quiet for a Saturday afternoon.

No parents. No brothers. Just a huge Soc house with soft carpets, fancy bathroom counters, and three girls with absolutely nothing better to do.

Cherry sat cross-legged on the floor flipping through a magazine while Marcia rummaged through a cabinet in the bathroom.

You leaned against the counter in your greaser jeans and worn sweater, watching her pull out bottles.

“Marcia,” you said slowly. “Why do you have four different kinds of face masks?”

Marcia turned around, holding up little jars like she’d just discovered treasure.

“Because,” she said dramatically, “we’re having a spa day.”

Cherry immediately grinned.

“Oh, I like this idea.”

You laughed. “A spa day? With me? Look at me, Marcia.”

Your boots were still dusty from the lot. Your hair was tied up messy with a ribbon. There was probably still grease on your hands from helping Steve earlier.

Cherry waved a dismissive hand.

“You’re pretty enough to survive a face mask.”

Marcia clapped her hands.

“Exactly! We’re doing nails, hair, face masks, the whole thing.”

You hesitated… then shrugged.

“Alright. But if I walk outta here smelling like flowers, the gang’s gonna start asking questions.”

Cherry smirked.

“That’s half the fun.”

An hour later the living room looked like a beauty shop exploded.

Nail polish bottles everywhere. Hair rollers scattered on the couch. Face mask jars open.

Cherry was carefully painting your nails a soft pink while Marcia curled your hair.

“You’re doing it crooked,” you muttered.

Cherry huffed.

“Stop moving!”

“I’m not mov—”

The front door suddenly opened.

All three of you froze.

Heavy footsteps.

Then a familiar voice.

“Well I’ll be—”

You groaned.

Of course.

Two-Bit Mathews leaned against the doorway with that crooked grin, jacket slung over his shoulder.

“Well if it ain’t the prettiest buncha girls in Tulsa.”

Marcia beamed immediately.

“There you are!”

Two-Bit’s eyes traveled around the room.

The nail polish. The rollers. The cucumber slices.

He squinted.

“…what the hell is this.”

Cherry grinned sweetly.

“Spa day.”

Two-Bit pointed at you.

“You’re lettin’ them do this to you?”

You lifted your freshly painted hand.

“Don’t start.”

He laughed.

“Aw, c’mon sweetheart, you’re a greaser!”

Marcia crossed her arms.

“You’re dating both of us. That means you’re participating.”

Two-Bit blinked.

“Participating in what exactly?”

Cherry held up a bottle of nail polish.

“Sit.”

Two-Bit immediately backed up.

“Nope.”

Marcia grabbed his arm.

“Sit.”

“No.”

You leaned back on the couch with a lazy smile.

“C’mon, Two-Bit. You scared of a little polish?”

His jaw dropped.

“I ain’t scared!”

Cherry smirked.

“Then sit.”

Two-Bit looked between the three of you.

Cherry smiling.

Marcia staring expectantly.

And you giving him that soft little look he could never say no to.

He sighed dramatically.

“…I hate all of you.”

But he sat.

Five minutes later he looked deeply uncomfortable.

Two-Bit sat stiff on the couch while Cherry applied a green face mask to his cheeks.

“This is humiliatin’.”

Marcia carefully painted his nails.

“You’re doing great.”

You leaned over, laughing.

“Don’t move your hand.”

He squinted at you.

“You’re enjoying this way too much.”

“Maybe.”

Cherry placed cucumber slices over his eyes.

“There.”

Two-Bit froze.

“…I can’t see.”

Marcia giggled.

“That’s the point.”

He sat there in silence for a moment.

Then muttered,

“If the gang finds out about this I’m blamin’ all of you.”

You leaned closer, whispering in his ear.

“You love us too much to snitch.”

He grinned slightly.

“…that might be true.”

An hour later…

The spa day was over.

Cherry and Marcia were cleaning up while you walked Two-Bit to the door.

He stretched his arms.

“Well that was the strangest afternoon of my life.”

You smiled.

“Admit it. You liked it.”

“I did not.”

You grabbed his hand.

His nails were painted dark red.

He stared at them.

“…they’re shiny.”

You laughed.

“You’re keepin’ them.”

“Like hell I am!”

But he didn’t wipe them off.

Two-Bit shoved his hands in his pockets and headed toward the porch, shaking his head.

“If the boys see this I’m dead.”

You called after him.

“Tell them your girlfriends made you do it!”

He grinned over his shoulder.

“Worth it.”

And he walked home with painted nails anyway.

(Reader is a Greaser)

In which Trip and reader are always running back to each other, but it never turns out well no matter how hard they try.

You meet Trip in the spring. He’s wearing a sweater that costs more than your whole closet and that stupid grin he only ever wore around you. You're leaning against the DX wall, chewing gum, grease under your nails, pretending like you don’t feel your heartbeat thud a little faster when he walks up.

He doesn’t care you’re a Greaser. Not at first. Not when it’s new. Not when his hand brushes yours and he kisses you under the bleachers like you’re something he wants and not just something he hides.

He says, “I don’t care what they think.”

He lies.

By summer, he flinches when his friends see you together. Starts calling you “trouble” like it’s a warning instead of a compliment. Laughs too loud at Soc parties when someone mocks the way Greaser girls wear their eyeliner thick and talk with a little heat in their voice.

You catch him saying “It’s not serious” to some guy in a letterman jacket. Like you’re not waiting on him, curled up with the phone cord wrapped around your finger. Like you didn’t skip shifts at the DX just to sit in the passenger seat of his pretty little car, legs on the dash, his hand on your thigh.

“You don’t get it,” he says, voice tight. “It’s not like that.”

But it is. It’s exactly like that.

Fall comes and you try again. You meet behind the field. Kiss like it’s the first time, like the last fight didn’t wreck you. You whisper, “Why does it always feel like we’re pretending this’ll work?”

Trip just looks at you, quiet for once, and says, “I don’t know.”

Winter’s colder than usual. You don’t talk. You don’t look. You see him with a blonde in a cardigan at a drive-in. She’s soft and smiling. You’re in Darry's old jacket, smoke in your lungs and something ugly in your throat.

You don’t cry. You tell yourself that means you’re over him. A Lie.

By next spring, he’s on your porch again. Same damn sweater. Same grin. You don’t say yes, but you don’t say no.

You fall into him like habit.

It’s better for a week. Maybe two. But then someone sees. Someone says something. And suddenly Trip’s looking over his shoulder, like you’re the secret again.

“Why do you always do this?” you ask, voice splintering.

He stares at you like he hates himself. Maybe he does.

“Because I can’t have you and have them, too.”

You say, “Then choose.”

He doesn’t.

You don’t fall apart. You’ve done that already. Enough times to know how to survive it.

You just let it end.

You walk away this time. For good.

Trip doesn’t stop you.

And the saddest part is? He almost does.
