Two weeks. Two weeks of contractors and builders and dust and noise. And even with all that completed to the pairs liking, the human was still running around the ground floor of the four story building, unpacking box after box and rearranging plant after jar after teapot of inventory. The shopâs opening was to be in two days, and the shipment had just arrived from their hometown - which meant it was late, of course.
For the black feline, narrowed gold eyes and clearly irritated tail slapping directed at the human running around the cluttered store, it was enough. Enough time spent in dirt and noise and clutter and forced socializing with brainless human men with hammers and wood and pipes. They both needed someone more interesting to interact with. But being in a completely new city with no acquaintances meant no idea where to start. Yet Smudge would not wait until the shop opened, hoping that someone interesting would wander through those mundane doors.
Hopping down from the chair and his plush red pillow against the shops front window display, Smudge sauntered over to the decorative door installed unassumingly against the side wall of the shop. He yowled, pawing at the door.
âNot for another two weeks,â the woman replied, barely taking a second glance as she continued placing jar after jar on the shelves across the room.
Snorting his displeasure, Smudge paced around the room, sniffing each box (barely stopping himself from hopping in one), until the woman demanded he climb off one of the displays. For someone usually so even-tempered and sedentary, she was rather finicky today, and the cat was officially done.
Going to the front door of the shop, Smudge gently shook his head and the bell on his collar that was usually silent, jingled. The door obediently opened, and the only sound the cat heard was his human calling out his name in question before the door shut behind him.
Sauntering down the unfamiliar street - Smudge hadnât the interest to explore it until now, instead familiarizing himself with his new four (well, five) story home - the black feline expertly avoided the humans walking, especially one of the kits who called out âkitty!â and tried to reach for him. Smudge inspected each store front, but they were all filled with the usual human nonsense. But just as he reached the corner of the second block, he sniffed. Something smelled faintly like blood.
Curiosity struck him as his head turned across the street from the one his new home was, to the store on that corner. Tall windows showed myriads of bookshelves inside, and Smudge saw the glint of jewels and metal shine against the window panes. As he crossed the street in line with the humans, the door of the shop opened as someone exited, and Smudge felt magical energy blast out following the human.
Demanding interest made Smudge sprint the last twenty feet and slip in through the door of the shop. Once inside, Smudge reveled in the smell of dusty old books - one of the only items he enjoyed dust emanating from - and the light bouncing off jewels in the case caught his attention just for a moment, until he saw the woman behind the front counter. Her. That was the woman who smelled of blood. Although, it was faint, which was odd for one of her kind. With little thought, and even less energy, Smudge hopped up on the counter, sat down, and examined the admittedly interesting woman.
