Just heard that fraxus week is on the same week as gratsu , sorry i didn't know i would have tried another date as to make it easiser on the fans of both ships , the date was set according to last year's date since we are trying to keep the same date for every year
That’s okay! ^^ Actually, we’ve been hosting Fraxus Week around the same dates (15th - 21st of July) since 2014 so I don’t know how this happened but Nalu Week got delayed this year too (but only this year, it’s gonna take place in the first week of July again next year) so hey that’s three weeks lmao.
But don’t worry, I’m sure the ones who participate are still participating no matter what and late entries are always fine anyway!

Here’s my part for @gratsu-weeks Gratsu Christmas 2015! I know Gray and Natsu are not interacting a lot, but I hope you don’t mind? You have Christmas to look forward to, though. I’ll aim for fluffy fluff then!
My prompt was gift, as I’m sure you understood from the title. As this is the first fanfiction I’ve ever posted on Tumblr I’m a bit nervous, but I hope you like it!
~~~
The morning was cold and dark. A large blanket of clouds lazily made their way through the sky above Magnolia.
Small crystals of frozen water, more widely known as snow, softly floated through the air and landed gently on the ground, covering the town with a soft, white-coloured blanket. The roofs was heavily coated with snow, looking as if they were ready to collapse, but the sturdy buildings could handle way more than that.
A few snowflakes found their way to dark, dark hair and landed there. They laid there in wonder when they didn’t melt, giving them some longer time to live. The white greatly contrasted the black and blue-ish strands, and stayed there when the person slowly made their way through the backstreets and small alleys.
The person walked with silent steps, leaving imprints in the fresh snow that'd shortly after be erased. The ice-mage’s breath left him with small, white clouds to mark their departure. Gray frowned and pulled the soft scarf closer around him. It wasn’t that the cold was affecting him, he was just more… aware of the chilly temperature. Well, after becoming a certain flame dragon-slayer’s mate it probably wasn’t avoidable.
Natsu himself had mentioned that the summer seemed warmer than before.
For once Gray wasn’t walking to just walk. He was walking… to think. To wrap his head around the fact that a certain holiday was approaching excessively fast. It was the 20th today. Just four days ‘til Christmas Eve and the last day possible to buy something for Christmas.
He had still not gotten his boyfriend a gift.
Could you blame him though? What could he get a guy who had been mostly _everywhere _in Fiore? A person who more or less always brought a souvenir? A mage who had all he needed and more? And most importantly, an idiot who always destroyed everything with flames when he wasn’t careful enough?
It was a pure miracle that the flame-brain’s house was still standing, in Gray’s honest opinion.
But then again, Gray himself was in his best health, even after all the times Natsu had taken him. He always showed a great care then, and was to all time gentle unless asked otherwise. Perhaps it was a dragon’s instinct, deeply buried within Natsu- to take care of what you love.
So, Gray guessed, perhaps the last reason did not quite justify that he hadn’t gotten Natsu a present yet. But by all means, the other reasons should be enough to get why the ice-mage was gift-less so close to Christmas.
The dark-haired mage was so deeply burrowed in his thoughts that he didn’t see the large patch of ice in front of him and nearly slipped. He cursed under his breath. It was an ironic thing really; the ice he created himself did not affect him in such a way, whereas he was as vulnerable as anyone to the ice that nature created.
But he was generally a little bit more careful than most people, obviously including a mage with bright pink hair. Perhaps he should get him shoes with spikes so that he didn’t slip all the time?
Then again, maybe that wasn’t the brightest idea. Natsu would probably only destroy more with sharp nails underneath his feet.
Gray rejected the idea.
Finally the sun broke through the clouds and bathed the town in orange, pink and yellow. The snow started sparkling and the whole thing was as from a postcard. In front of Gray was the most majestic building of all, and he decided that it couldn’t be avoided anymore.
He had to take this matter to someone who could help him. With steps that had to be forced he walked to the guild.
And to… her.
~~~
“Yo, Cana.”
Gray popped down on the bench by the table the card magic mage was sitting on. She was, as per usual, chugging down on a full barrel of ale.
“Hm?” She turned towards him and immediately her dark brown eyes glinted in amusement. “Wearing your boyfriend’s scarf, I see?”
He could not stop the heat that rose to his cheek when he remembered the dragon-scale scarf. But he could not remove it as he had promised Natsu to keep it safe before he left for his job with Happy and Lucy.
Gray shook the embarrassment off. This was not the time for being shy. Everyone knew about their relationship anyway, so why did he get so uncomfortable every time someone brought it up?
Focus.
“Well, yeah, but that’s not why I came here. Listen, I need your help.”
“For what?”
“Ah, you see… It’s soon Christmas, right? And I’m, you know, kinda lost as for what I should give him.”
Cana laughed. “With that grave face of yours I thought it was something horrible that had happened! Hey Lisanna, get over here!”
“Wait, wh-”
Cana shot Gray an overly exasperated look. “Lisanna and Natsu are close friends right? She’ll probably think of something. Or at the very least she’ll be very good help. But perhaps I should ask Erz-”
“No no, Lisanna is fine,” Gray quickly assured her with a paler face than usual.
Cana smirked at his expression. She knew the ice-mage’s weaknesses. They had been friends for a long time, after all.
Just then the youngest take-over mage appeared with a questioning face. “What is it that you need me for?”
Jumping up from where she was draped on the table Cana threw her arms around Lisanna and Gray.
“To go shopping!”
~~~
They couldn’t get at it at once as it still was pretty early with little to no shops open. That left time for brainstorming.
“What do you suggest, Liz?”
“Hmm. Well, Natsu is not one for wearing much other stuff than what he already has, so that obviously leaves clothes out.”
“You got that right,” Gray agreed.
“You could get him something delicious, but he eats about anything anyway.”
The ice mage nodded.
“And books are out of the question…”
Cana groaned. “This is harder than I thought it’d be. I’m beginning to get why you seemed so desperate!”
Gray crossed his arms. “I know, right?”
Lisanna smiled gently. “Now now, we’ll figure something out. I guess you could get him a decorative item, but his house _is _already pretty stuffed. It’d have to be something really personal and meaningful if it were to work. On the other hand, what about a photo album?”
Gray leaned forward and placed his elbow on the table, resting his chin in his hand. “Well, I guess that’d be nice, but we don’t really have much pictures. Both of us kind of live in the moment, so we never felt the need to take any.”
“Okay, let’s think of something else then. What about a necklace or a bracelet? It’d only be a simple accessory, but you could get something that really is special.”
Lisanna was really trying her hardest to make this work.
“Maybe, but I’m not too sure. It’d get in the way when he fights, and he already had this scarf to think of.”
Gray stroked the scarf, savoring the softness of it. He was starting to really miss Natsu. He missed their fights. He missed their banters. But he also missed the kisses the other would give him unexpectedly, making him blush. A lot. He missed the way they were constantly touching, either by holding hands, having their arms around each other or simply by brushing their shoulders together. He missed their cuddling. He wanted to snuggle his face into the crook of Natsu's neck. He needed the other’s affection. But he also wanted to wrap his arms around the other and just hold him there.
Yep, he really missed Natsu.
They sat in silence for a bit while Gray was lost in his thoughts before the ice-mage opened his mouth again. “Gomen Lisanna. It’s just that I’ve never ever really gotten him anything for Christmas before, and now that we’re together I just seriously want it to be something special, you know?”
The white-haired mage smiled again. “It’s okay. I know how hard it can be. But as soon as the shops are starting to open up, let’s go and see if we can find something, yeah?”
~~~
“Lucyyyyy, I’m starving! Let’s eat!”
The dragon-slayer’s whining struck a nerve in Lucy. She could feel her irritation start to bubble up.
Why had she asked him to join her on this job again? She wasn’t really sure. They weren’t far away from Magnolia, but far enough that Lucy had insisted on taking the train, much to Natsu’s demise. It had been quite the journey, trying to stop him from puking. Well, at least the ride only took an hour.
“Natsu, you’ve already eaten at least two meals today! Remember, we were here to _earn _those jewels, not use them all up after we got them! I need to pay my rent, as you’re aware of. C'mon, let's get on our way back home.”
Natsu pouted and walked after the blonde girl, with a stomach that felt emptier and emptier for each passing minute. No, second. For each passing second he grew hungrier and hungrier. Yes, that fit better.
“If I starve to death it’s your fault.”
She ignored him, and instead looked around with a concerned expression on her face. “Where’s Happy?”
“Dunno.”
Lucy whined in frustration. “This is the last time I take on a mission with just you two! I swear, after you got together with Gray you’re getting more and more unreasonable when you’re not with him!”
Natsu turned his head up and away, smelling the air that was filled with the scent of delicious food.
Just the thought of food made his mouth water, so what do you think that pleasant aroma did to him?
“’s not my fault he’s that irresistible. I can’t wait to get home to him,” he mumbled, distracted by the smell. It seemed like curry. He could totally go for that now.
“You guys are so cute,” Lucy said as she shook her head. “What did you get him for Christmas?”
Natsu stopped, his eyes widening slowly as he took her words in. “Ch-Christmas?”
Lucy turned around to look at him with a raised eyebrow. “Yeah, Christmas. It’s just four days until Christmas Eve, you know?”
When Natsu just stared at her she connected the pieces quite easily.
“You don’t have anything for him, now do you?”
The dragon-slayer shook his head. Lucy face-palmed.
“Our way home need to wait. Come on, let’s find him a present. What do you think he would want?”
Natsu tried to look as if in deep thought, but he failed miserably. “I have no idea. Maybe curry?”
The celestial mage whined again. “Please be reasonable with me, Natsu. You need to get him a gift! It’s your first Christmas together!”
The two of them had some sort of a stare-down, but was soon interrupted by a blue exceed.
“Natsu! Natsu, come quick!”
It was Happy, flying towards the two of them at full speed, a large grin spread on his face.
“What is it?” Natsu asked the cat, glad to get away from Lucy’s glaring eyes. She was not as intimidating as Erza, but still.
Happy’s eyes was large and bright with excitement. “I found the perfect present for Gray!”
Natsu’s eyes lit up. “Good work! See Lucy, you needn’t worry so much!”
Lucy crossed her arms. “I’ll believe it when I see it. Show us, Happy.”
Happy nodded and took the lead. He started talking. “Well, first I was following the smell of fish, right? I heard this town has some really fancy dishes made of fish, and I was a bit curious. In my opinion fish is best raw, but still. But when I was there I met Lyon! He was there alone, and I think he was looking for a present for Juvia. And that was when I remembered that you had no present for Gray, so I started talking to him and asking him if he had any idea what you could give to Gray. Well, first he threw a fit because 'Gray had ruined the perfect opportunity to be with Juvia but had instead crushed her heart’ and stuff. But then he remembered that perhaps he had a chance to get on with her now so I think he forgave Gray. He started talking a lot about Juvia after that but finally got back to my original question and he knew exactly what you could give Gray! Look, we’re here!”
~~~
Walking around all the shops of Magnolia was actually not as easy as Gray had thought it would be. The town was rather large, and the streets were completely packed with shops, stands and, of course, lots and lots of people. The group of three had been fairly early, but it was still lots of ordinary humans and a few mages to get around.
The shopping streets, and basically everywhere else had been decorated for Christmas. There were large bells hanging with festoons of spruce. There were mistletoes wrapped with red ribbons hanging on the most unexpected places with giggling, lovesick couples underneath, shyly stealing kisses from one another. There was a Santa surrounded by kids on a large chair in the middle of the busiest street. There were a lot.
The three mages was sure to at least look into each window they passed, and more often than not they walked inside the shops, looking at everything. Jewelry, clothes, decorative items, even food. There were a lot to choose between, but none of it felt right.
They bumped into Sting and Rogue after a while, and chatted for a bit. The two of them had already been together for quite a while, so they were used to getting each other presents. Gray ased them for advice, having no idea what else to do.
“You’re trying to get a present for Natsu-san, right? I know how hard it is the first time. But there is one thing that is important to remember, Gray-san. It’s not the price on the tag that counts. It is the feelings you pour into what you give him!”
Sting’s words were clear, but still they left Gray confused. Rogue saw this and took the time to explain what his boyfriend meant. “What he is trying to say is get him something you can’t get anywhere else. For example, make something. Those presents have always meant more to me than anything you can buy, even if the quality isn't the best. Think about it.”
They talked a little bit more, before they bid each other farewell and merry Christmas.
Those two had actually been far more helpsome than any other, because finally, Gray was getting an idea.
~~~
Heads turned towards the sound of the guild door being slammed open, not really surprised but still a bit startled at the sudden noise. Illuminated by the quickly setting sun was three shadows.
“We're back!”
The cheerful voice carried easily through the already noisy guildhall and was clearly heard by everyone with various amount of acknowledgement. The three members of the guild was soon comfortably settled in the familiar building, all wanting to see their friends again. They hadn’t been gone for so long, only a few days, but it still felt good to be back.
Lucy went to Mira and Lisanna. “It's nice to be home!” she said, collapsing onto a barstool. “Natsu sure is hard to be with when he's away from Gray!”
Mira smiled as Lisanna laughed. “Really?” the youngest sibling said. “Gray isn't nothing but pitiful. He’s like a lost puppy without his other half! It’s a bit cute, actually.”
Erza came over with a plate of cake in her hand, happily eating the delicious strawberrytart. “Cute or not, the two can still wreck some havoc. I heard Gray was close to starting a fight with a shop owner Lisanna. What happened? It’s not like him.”
Mirajane and Lucy looked over at Lisanna with questioning faces, having not heard about it. Lisanna chuckled. “It was when Cana and I went shopping with him, to help him look for something to Natsu. He was getting frustrated and went to the owner of one of these shops and started asking him about what the best kind of present would be. The owner didn’t have any good ideas to give, and I guess it just was the tip of the iceberg for him as he lifted his hand and started making ice. Cana and I managed to stop him before he did any damaged, though- he reminded me a bit of Natsu there.”
Over to the exceed- Happy was quickly by Carla’s side. Wendy welcomed him warmly back, and Lily gave him a short nod. Happy started talking away about everything that had happened on the job, from keeping Natsu on the train to completing the job without destroying any towns and to meeting Lyon and finding a present. Out of the exceeds and the dragon-slayer it was only Wendy that really listened and commented his story.
It was the same old, really.
Natsu however searched the hall with his eyes as quickly as he could. He frowned and pouted when he didn't find what he was looking for. A certain woman caught onto it.
“Looking for Gray? You won't find him here.”
Natsu turned towards her. “Aw, why not? Where is he?”
Cana sighed. “He’s at his home. But you can’t go there- he’s busy with your present. You have to wait until tomorrow.”
“Aww!” Natsu whined. “But I missss hiiiiiiiim!”
Cana only shrugged, offering him no help. Natsu slumped down on a bench, arms crossed. He missed the ice-cold bastard a lot.
~~~
When the next day came around Gray was sitting inside the guild as the doors was slammed open, much like the day before.
“Grrrrayyyyyyy!”
Natsu started running towards his boyfriend before the ice-mage understood what was going on. The dragon-slayer attacked his boyfriend with a kiss and everything was okay.
“Welcome home,” Gray gasped when Natsu finally released his lips. The other gave him a large grin.
“It’s great to be back!”
The gifts were placed underneath the tree, and everything was okay again.
Christmas was just around the corner.
~~~
Hmm, what could it be in those presents? The answer will come on Christmas! ^w^
A big thank you to @gratsu-week for putting the Gratsu Christmas Event together. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve seen so far and I’m happy that I get to participate :)
"Merry Christmas, brats!" Makarov yelled from his seat by the beautifully decorated tree. "Present time!" A smile broke out over his alcohol-flushed face before he stretched his arm out and snatched up a random present.
Happy perked up in anticipation. "Go ahead." Natsu said softly, stroking his soft ears in encouragement. "That's the present you brought right? Go watch her open it."
Happy had been talking about his Secret Santa present for the last two months. His excitement was contagious. Natsu had never been as excited for a Christmas as he had been for this one.
Okay, maybe Happy's cheerful attitude wasn't the only reason he was so eager for this year's holiday. Natsu had put a lot of thought into his present this year, more than any previous Christmas.
'It's because you care more about this person than anything else.' Natsu shook his head to clear his thoughts. This person wasn't interested in him like that, but Natsu still made it his personal goal to make his Christmas one he would never forget.
"This one's for Lucy!" Makarov called out. Lucy? Shit. That meant Carla probably already opened the gift Happy had gotten her.
Natsu's eyes searched the guild hall for the sky dragon slayer. Sure enough, once he caught sight of a mane of dark blue, he saw Happy staring at a very pink cheeked, white furred exceed with nothing short of pure adoration. 'Good for you, buddy.'
Natsu was so caught up watching everyone laugh as they opened gifts, he didn't even hear Gray approaching. He sure as hell didn't smell him. Everyone was home for the holidays. The guild hall was jam packed.
"Why are you sitting here all by yourself, Flame Brain?" Gray questioned as he sat himself down beside him.
Gray felt a smirk tug on the corner of his mouth. That face splitting, eye closing grin was always catching. "You too." He answered softly before handing him another glass of eggnog.
Natsu looked at it curiously. "I saw you ran out so I brought you some more." Gray shrugged nonchalantly before taking a sip from his own glass.
"I see..." He pulled the glass up to his face and took a whiff.
"The hell?" Gray raised a dark brow.
"Just making sure you didn't put anything other than rum in here." Natsu murmured before taking a sip. "It's good, thanks."
"Do you really think I'm that much of an asshole?" Gray grumbled, brow tense with irritation.
"I'm not here to call you an asshole on Christmas. I'm also not here to argue with you, so I guess that technically makes you –" Gray scoffed and smacked the back of his head with an open palm. "Ow!"
"Serves you right." Gray grumbled.
"If you wanted to start slappin' people, why'd you even come over here?" Natsu rolled his eyes.
"It's Christmas, you dunce! You were sitting over here looking all lonely so I figured I'd keep you company."
"Why do you care if I'm sitting alone or not?" Gray blinked at him, knowing what the answer was but unable to actually say it out loud. "Well?" Natsu prompted.
"Natsu, I..." Gray said softly, cheeks growing hotter by the minute.
"Here's one for Natsu!" Gramps bellowed across the guild.
The fire and ice mages snapped their heads forward at the announcement and were greeted with the sight of Pantherlily flying towards them dressed in an elf costume.
Gray bit his lip to hold back his smile, the unimpressed look on Lily's face said he clearly didn't enjoy wearing the red and green outfit and it’s matching hat. Natsu, however, didn't seem to pick up on his mood. He burst out laughing as the black exceed landed on the table in front of them. "Nice dress, Lily!" Natsu gripped his sides, tears forming in his eyes.
"It's not a dress, it's a tunic!" He hissed back. That sent Natsu further into hysterics. Pantherlily considered throwing his present at his head when he chortled so hard he fell into Gray.
"Don't mind him. The moron's had quite a bit of eggnog this morning."
"Yeah, yeah. Merry Christmas." Pantherlily sighed in exasperation. He set the present gently on the table before flying back to the guild's drunken Santa Claus.
When Natsu finally calmed down a few minutes later, he couldn't help but notice his head was still leaning against Gray's shoulder. 'That's weird, why didn't he shove me off the second I touched him?' Natsu shrugged it off. It must just be holiday spirit causing him to be nicer to the dragon slayer than usual.
"Aren't you going to open your present?"
Right! His present. "Oooh!" Natsu nearly squeaked.
Natsu's eyes lit up in a way that had Gray's stomach knotting in what had to be anticipation. 'Keep telling yourself that.' He couldn't help but roll his eyes at himself. Who was he kidding?
Natsu looked the present over before unwrapping it. He loved trying to guess who it was from before looking inside. "To: Natsu." He read quietly. "Caution: Fragile." Damn. That meant he couldn't shake it to guess what he had gotten.
"Hmm..." The dragon slayer pursed his lips while he contemplated.
"Here we go." Gray crossed his arms over his chest. This was gonna take a while.
"It looks like Mira's writing." A smug grin spread across Gray's face. He'd watched Natsu open presents for years. He knew how to throw him off when it came to Secret Santa.
"Yeah, but the way Erza's crying with frosting on her face and crushing Mira's face into her boobs, I'm guessing she was Erza's Secret Santa."
Natsu peered up at the bar, and sure enough, the teary eyed requip mage had half of a three layer cake in one hand and was pulling Mira to her chest with the other.
That left one more option. Natsu had to scent the wrapping paper. Gray snorted when Natsu began to smell the package all over, carefully turning it around multiple times. "And you call Lucy weird."
"Shut up." Natsu grumbled and continued. There were so many scents on it! He smelled leather and steel – Erza. A summer breeze – Wendy. Cedar and sap – Laki. Roses and citrus – Mira. Ink and paper – Levy. Pine needles on snow – Gray. Cinnamon – Gramps. Of course it also smelled like an Exceed from Lily delivering it.
Natsu's brows furrowed together. "Whoever got me this year made sure a lot of people touched this before it went under the tree. I can't make out which scent is the strongest. They're all so different."
Gray watched with pure amusement as Natsu got more and more frustrated. "Ugh! This is driving me crazy!" He griped before slamming his fist on the table. "I've guessed who it was every year before opening it! I can't break tradition!"
"Then take a guess and open the damn thing."
"Screw you."
"Aren't you curious about what's inside?" Gray asked as casually as possible. It was the best way to get Natsu to open the freaking gift already without letting on how excited he was to watch him open it.
"Shit, I am." Natsu muttered in realization. "I really am." He had to know. He had to know now. "It's from Levy." He blurted without thinking before tearing pretty, red wrapping paper apart.
He lifted to lid of the box to find another box. 'From Gray,' was written on the top in his surprisingly fancy cursive.
"You bastard!" Natsu snarled and beat him with the side of his clenched fist. "You tricked me! You ruined my perfect streak!"
Gray laughed as he held up his forearm to take the brunt of the halfhearted attacks. "It wasn't that difficult, Ashes!"
Natsu growled at him once more before turning his attention back to his gift. He pulled the lid of the second box off and gasped. He was so enraptured with what was before him, he didn't notice Gray staring at him in what could only be described as awe.
Natsu trailed his fingers over the intricate ornament. His eyes took in the detailed dragon made of purple ice with sheer admiration. Every scale was placed perfectly, the eyes had an amazing slant to them. It's jaw was strong and it's wings were spread proudly. It's tail curved as if the dragon were flying, and it's claws looked so sharp.
"Gray, this is... It's beautiful! Thank you!"
"Eh?" Gray looked more than a little surprised. "You aren't upset?"
"Upset? No! This is perfect!"
"But it's just an ornament that goes on a Christmas tree. Everyone else got something really cool," he gestured around the guild hall with a wave of his hand, "aren't you mad that that's all you got?"
Natsu looked him dead in the eye. Gray could see in his expression that he had offended the fire wizard. "No. What the hell kinda person do you take me for? Presents aren't important to me!"
"They're... not?" Come to think of it, Natsu was always happy with whatever he got for Christmas. Even that one year when Romeo was 5 and built him a Happy replica out of twigs and mud, Natsu still gave him that brilliant smile and told him the gift was amazing.
"No, you stupid ice block! What matters is the thought that goes into the gift and the time you spend with the people you care about!"
"Oh." Gray's face flushed when he remembered the way Natsu's fingers traced the detailed ornament in fascination. He'd spent weeks making the ornament only to destroy it and start over. He needed it to be perfect.
"Idiot." Natsu grumbled before going back to admiring the ice figure.
Gray swore he heard him murmur something along the lines of 'so pretty,' and felt heat prick at his face. "Come on now, you don't have to get so worked up about it. I just wanted to piss ya off a bit before showing you the better half of the gift. Sheesh."
"Better half of –"
In his flustered state, Gray kept talking about the first thing that came to mind. "Why don't you care about presents anyway?"
Natsu lifted one shoulder in a lazy shrug. "I don't know. Igneel always made me something for Christmas, and sometimes I wondered why I didn't get more. I feel stupid about that now." Gray watched as he bit his lip, lost in thought for a moment.
"Anyway, after he left, I thought a lot about how he raised me. How he tried to make every holiday special, even though it was just the two of us. Then Christmas rolled around and I was all alone. It sucked. All I wanted was to be with... with family. But I didn't have one around anymore."
"Natsu.." Gray said softly. His hand twitched with the yearning to pull him close, to comfort him when he looked so forlorn.
"It's okay." He perked up and flashed Gray a smile. "I met Gramps not too long after that and he brought me to the guild, and I had one again. A family. People to love and celebrate holidays and achievements with. People to laugh, cry, and fight with. Since then, just being around all of you is more than enough for me. I don't need gifts."
Gray smiled and turned his head to wipe tears in his eyes. 'Stupid Flame Brain, making me cry.'
"But I love this one all the same." Natsu pulled the dragon out carefully from the soft material it was nestled in. "It really is gorgeous, Gray. I forget how detailed your ice make magic can be."
Gray scratched at the back of his head. "Yeah. I didn't just use magic to make it though. I used it to make the basic shape, and from there I carved it."
Natsu's eyes widened as he once again regarded the complexity of it all. The scales, the claws, the wings, the eyes, the teeth. Gray had put so much effort into this. "But why? Why did you take so much time to do this when it could have taken you a few seconds?"
"It wouldn't mean as much." Natsu turned those piercing eyes his way and his heart began to race. "Don't look too far into it, Ash Brains."
"But you –"
"Tsk. You're so dense." Gray reached over and plucked a small piece of paper from the dragon's mouth. "You didn't even notice this."
"There's more?"
"I already told you that!"
Natsu took the paper from his hand and unrolled it. "A receipt?" He read it over, jaw dropping in disbelief. "You paid all my damage bills from my solo missions?!"
"You only had 3, don't make such a big deal about it." Gray murmured as he picked at an invisible thread on his pants.
"Is that why you've been going on so many jobs the last few months?"
"Yeah. You rack up quite the bill when you decide to go on a rampage."
That was so sweet. Why did Gray put so much into this gift? He usually got his Secret Santa something they need around the house and a nice bottle of booze. And why was he blushing so much?
Gray fidgeted under the dragon slayer's stare. He looked around for something, anything to change the subject. "Gramps has vacated his seat near the tree. I guess that's all the presents for this year." It was only then Gray realized he didn't get one.
He stood to grab another drink before he opened his mouth and said something stupid. He always was one to blurt random shit out when he was nervous. The way Natsu was staring at him definitely made him nervous.
Gray took a step toward the bar and nearly shrieked when a warm hand shot out and grabbed onto his. "Hey, let go!"
Natsu immediately did as told, brushing his fingertips over the palm of Gray's hand so softly that a shiver rolled down his spine.
"You didn't get your present."
"I'm just going to assume someone forgot. No big deal."
"And why not?"
Gray finally turned and looked into those vibrant, green eyes. "I guess all that stuff you said about family really struck a chord with me."
Natsu smiled. "That's sweet and all, but I have your gift right here, Ice Princess." He reached into his vest and pulled out an envelope with a bow stuck on it. Gray smirked. He wanted to laugh but he wasn't in the mood to get punched again.
He took it and had it open in the same minute. He stared in confusion at the papers in his hands. One was a simple piece of paper with an address on it.
'7648 Alpine Road
Crocus Cemetary,'
The others were simply two train tickets to Crocus, set to leave on January 1st.
"Natsu, what is this?"
Natsu took a deep breath. He had no idea how Gray was going to react to this. "I hired a private investigator to find where..." He cut himself off. What if Gray didn't want to know?
"'To find where'...?" Gray repeated.
"That address is where Ultear is buried. I thought you may want to go visit her. Say one last good bye, maybe tell her about your life since the Grand Magic Games. I bet she'd be proud that you've learned devil slayer magic."
Natsu watched as Gray's lip began to tremble. 'Shit, I made him mad. Shit, shit, shit.'
"Natsu, you asshole!" Gray choked back a sob as tears began to stream down his face.
He grabbed Natsu's hand and yanked him onto his feet, crashing their bodies together. He wrapped his arms around that warm body, face buried in his scarf as he sputtered out small insults between words of thanks.
"How cute!" Cana slurred from a few tables over. "I see you finally man'd up and told him how you feel, Gray! I'm proud of you."
"Cana!" Gray hissed, snapping his head in her direction to glare at her.
"What is she talking about?" Natsu asked.
"Oh, so you didn't tell him you're madly in love with him?" Cana winked.
"Listen here, you drunk –"
"You love me?" Natsu breathed.
Gray failed to form any more words. He slowly turned back to Natsu, hands shaking. "I... uh... yeah? M-Maybe just a little –"
The last thing Gray saw was the smile on Natsu's face before he was pulled forward. Natsu's warm mouth was on his in the next instant, hands clutching at his unbuttoned shirt as his lips and tongue turned Gray into an incoherent mess.
When Natsu pulled back, he had to laugh. He'd seen the ice mage blush before, but it had nothing on this. His entire face had gone pink and there were even hints of red in his cheeks. "I love you too, idiot. We're gonna be spending a lot of time together when you get back from your visit with Ultear, got that?"
Gray felt a stab of disappointment. "Aren't you coming with me? You bought two tickets."
Natsu shook his head. "I thought you'd want to go with Lyon. He deserves to visit her too."
Mavis, Natsu had really outdone himself this time. "He can come, but he can buy his own ticket."
"Huh?"
"I know you've already met Ultear, but I want to introduce you again... as my boyfriend."
Boyfriend? Damn it, Natsu could feel that he was now blushing harder than the ice devil. He leaned forward, head resting in the crook of his mate's neck. The scent of pine needles on snow seeped into his senses and he welcomed it wholeheartedly. "Looking forward to it, Snowflake."
