she'd  received  a  correspondence  from  an  artist  from  paldea  who  had  recently  learned  of  the  rareita  region's  existence,  desiring  to  visit  and  speak  with  it's  champion.  it  had  been  a  strange  and  yet  unexpected  request,  but  not  an  entirely  unwelcome  one.  the  name  was  familiar  too,  and  with  a  little  digging  in  the  league,  she  found  he  was  the  grass  type  gym  leader  of  artazon.  the  champion  remembered  shrugging  with  a  smile  at  ari,  and  simply  stating  something  akin  to  sure,  why  not  ?

and  that  was  how  they  got  here,  next  to  each  other  outside  on  the  roof  of  a  local  restaurant,  drinking  a  local  tea   (   cocoa  for  six   )   and  chatting  about  everything.  when  the  question  is  posed,  six  almost  hesitates,  but  she  forces  herself  to  start  speaking  anyway.         ❝   well,  rareita  was  founded  long  ago.  it's  said  it  was  created  when  the  stars  aligned  in  the  night  sky,  leading  a  sailor  from  eteria  to  the  forgotten  and  untouched  island.  there,  he  made  shore,  starting  a  camp  and  realizing  he  no  longer  knew  how  to  get  back  home.  ❞       what  little  of  their  history  she  had  pried  from  the  depths  of  the  ruins  allowed  her  to  speak  eloquently  of  the  place  she  so  cared  for.  the  more  she  speaks,  the  smoother  her  speech  gets  as  she  eases  into  the  conversation,  talking  with  her  hands,  making  gestures  and  expressions  that  add  to  the  story.         ❝   so,  he  created  a  new  home.   ❞

❝   it  started  on  the  shore,  just  over  there.   ❞         she  gestures  off  to  the  shores  of  honaru  city,  where  beaches  are  filled  with  rareitan  citizens  simply  enjoying  the  beautiful  day.         ❝   it's  not  really  clear  how  long  ago  it  happened,  but  it  did.  that's  where  it  all  started.  they  began  to  branch  out  through  the  land,  discovering  the  pokemon  that  lived  here,  even  introducing  some  of  their  own.  it's  said  that  caterpie  was  not  originally  a  species  that  existed  here,  but  it  began  to  adapt  and  even  gained  a  new  form  as  a  butterfree,  only  found  in  rareita.   ❞       she  waves  her  hand  again,  dismissing  the  statement.        ❝   at  any  rate,  as  time  went  on,  there  was  a  pokemon  said  to  watch  over  the  land  of  rareita  –  which  had  been  named  after  the  man  who  first  landed  here.  that  pokemon  descended  upon  the  region,  meeting  with  it's  new  inhabitants.  according  to  the  ruins,  it  blessed  the  peoples  it  came  to  fall  in  love  with,  providing  them  with  incredible  power.  the  power  was  unclear,  but  for  a  time,  the  region  began  to  expand.  people  became  descendants  of  the  region,  so  to  speak,  of  the  original  man  who  discovered  it.  they  grew  and  changed  and  created  a  place  of  peace,  a  place  of  love  and  prosperity.   ❞ 

her  face  darkens  a  little  for  a  moment,  as  if  remembering  something  awful.         ❝   but  it  would  not  last.   ❞        a  sadness  enters  her  voice,  it  reaches  her  eyes  –  a  darkness  hidden  behind  something  once  so  bright.         ❝   a  great  calamity  struck  the  earth,  struck  the  region.  it's  not  clear  what  exactly  it  was,  but  what  is  known  is  that  the  legendary  pokemon  attempted  to  save  the  peoples  of  rareita  in  the  distant  past.  it  attempted  to  protect  everyone  with  all  it's  might,  to  keep  the  region  safe.   ❞        her  brow  furrows  in  sadness.         ❝   it  failed.   ❞        her  hands  are  a  little  less  animated,  a  little  less  excited  and  full  of  whimsy.  instead,  they  move  gently,  illustrating  a  sad  tale.        ❝   the  region  was  devastated.  destroyed.  the  peoples  nearly  wiped  out,  thousands  died.  tens  of  thousands…  but  out  of  the  rubble  crawled  those  that  remained,  and  they  began  to  rebuild.  the  brightest  stars  in  the  night  sky  guiding  them  further  beyond  to  become  stronger.   ❞        a  pause,  a  deep  breath  in.        ❝   over  time,  they  continued  to  rebuild,  the  legendary  pokemon  no  longer  showing  itself  to  those  who  remained.  those  who  remembered  created  the  ruins,  the  memories  of  their  appearance  and  the  region  itself.  the  memories  of  the  people,  of  the  pokemon.  everything…  and  then  it  was  sealed  forever,  only  to  be  opened  by  those  who  were  true  descendants  of  the  originals.  many  tried.  all  failed.   ❞

she  looks  out  upon  the  sea  with  a  sense  of  longing.         ❝   the  region's  memories  began  to  fade.  stories  no  longer  were  told,  people  spoke  less  and  less  of  everything  as  time  went  on.  the  march  of  time,  of  progress  and  forward  movement,  it  became  the  thing  at  the  forefront.  our  history  became  long  forgotten,  lost  to  time.  and  so  did  we.   ❞         finally,  she  looks  back  to  the  other,  continuing  to  animate  the  story  slower  more  gentle  than  before.         ❝   it  took  a  very  long  time  for  those  ruins  to  be  opened  again  by  the  last  descendant  of  the  region  –  by  me.  inside  of  the  ruins,  memories  brought  back  to  life  reminded  the  world  of  who  were  are,  with  a  little  help.  memories  don't  work  on  their  own,  they  have  to  be  spoken  of  and  cherished  in  order  to  become  something  greater.  some  of  the  memories  haven't  been  found  again,  they  haven't  been  cherished  and  remembered…  because  i  haven't  gone  back  yet.   ❞

there's  a  gentle  sigh  that  leaves  her  lips.  a  somber,  soft  sound  that  breaks  through  the  air.  she  smiles  at  the  artist  again,  full  of  regret,  but  also  so  full  of  love.      ❝   there's  a  lot  more  to  this  place  than  meets  the  eye.  more  than  even  i  know.  there's  history  and  memory  here,  secrets  left  to  discover.  rareita  and  it's  people  are  special,  they  share  a  bond  with  pokemon  unlike  any  other.  a  bond  with  the  land  and  with  the  stars.  i  can't  wait  to  learn  more  about  it.   ❞    the  thought  terrified  her,  if  she  was  honest.  knowing  the  unknown,  learning  of  the  past.  and  she  was  the  only  one  who  could  do  it,  and  yet…         ❝   i  really  love  this  place.  more  than  anything.   ❞        a  heartfelt  expression  etches  itself  into  her  features  as  she  looks  away  once  again,  watching  the  people  below  as  they  go  about  their  lives  before  looking  up  to  the  stars  and  feeling  like  she  understood.      ❝   i  hope  i  was  able  to  answer  your  questions.   ❞
