BUSHWICK GRAFSTRACT
by Fumero
Founded during the Dutch colonization of America, Bushwick was predominantly German in the 1800s, but as the Brooklyn neighborhood became home to a diverse mix of Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican, and Salvadorian immigrants in the late 20th century they brought a whole new set of cultural icons and culinary options. With a unique style of colorful grafstract art that doesn’t fit other categories Fumero has labeled his work as Fumeroism, and in 2015, for the West Coast inspired L.A. Burrito at Wilson Ave and Jefferson St in Bushwick, Fumero blended an assortment of Latin American inspired iconography. In addition to an Olmec icon and poison dart frog Fumero included a hummingbird which, he says, the Aztecs highly regarded for its strength, energy, and diligence, and whose agile movements Aztec soldiers mimicked. @fumeroism
