I’m sorry but I do not know any good answers to this question. I’m flattered that you would come to me looking for help, but beyond the quotes about “health food” from my previous message, I’m not aware of or simply do not remember the specifics of her eating habits.

Hmmm. Well, I don’t have any specific answers regarding how often or what she used to wash her hair, but I feel comfortable saying she preferred what I think is called a bob or sometimes a long pageboy or a medium cut. I can’t remember who said it (Alexandre de Paris?) but I recall a hairstylist being quoted as saying that she liked her hair “half-length with a permanent.” As I’m sure you know, she wore long hairpieces after her marriage and for a very brief period in the early 1960s she allowed Alexandre de Paris to give her his famous “artichoke” short style, but it appears she preferred to keep her real hair at about shoulder length throughout her life. According to Judith Quine (and Gwen Robyns, I think), she had very fine hair that was also very thin.

I know she loved sweet stuff but was on severe diets while Hollywood decades (salads, lean meats, very small portions). She did that because of the art itself (cinema) also probably for a health thing, but mainly because of the way she thought skinny actresses looked better on screen (if I remember it OK it was her ideas but also a result of a advice/comment she was told once… kind of the voice story).

Exercises: I rememeber reading about strong training for ballet/dancing scenes.

Throughout her life, Grace’s wealth and status usually gave her access to a bounty of delectable foods and, by most accounts, she loved to eat that food. Despite this, her disciplined nature seems to have made her conscientious about her consumption. She told Roderick Mann of Ladies’ Home Journal in 1970 about her love of “health foods” and repeated the sentiment to People magazine in 1982 telling Fred Hauptfuhrer, “A crash diet would make me nervous and bad-tempered. I do enjoy good food but try to eat correctly, the right things. I am aware of the importance of having well-balanced meals. We have whole-meal bread and whole rice, and I tend to avoid sugar. There are a lot of other things I know I should avoid, but I don’t always do so.” 

In regard to physical fitness, I have read various accounts of Grace, like so many of us, attempting this or that exercise method while rarely maintaining any routine beyond a brief period of time. However, I think it is safe to assume that she was hardly ever a sedentary person as walking was a lifelong form of pleasurable exercise for her. My fellow bloggers and friends dosesofgrace and gracefilm each posted wonderful quotes from Grace about how much she loved to walk HERE and HERE.
