Most days the underside of the Smith-Ninth Street subway bridge over the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn is a tangle of ungainly gray beams, but this week it has been aglow in bold colors every night. The vivid projection, dubbed “Spectrum II,” is an intervention by artists Colin Bowring and George Del Barrio, who are using powerful theatrical lights to beam a flowing range of hues onto a feature of Brooklyn’s urban landscape that is either unremarkable or oppressive, depending on who you ask.

CURRENT: Gowanus is an art exhibition and sale presented by Arts Gowanus and curated by Benjamin Sutton. The exhibit surveys the breadth and depth of visual art that is being made in Gowanus today. The Brooklyn nonprofit opened with  a benefit last evening and is now on view through weekend.  The show is colorful, thoughtful and curious (take note of Matt Callinan‘s amorphous ceiling installation of white balloons), so find your favorite pair of saddle shoes and maybe a flask of whiskey, and head back in time to see the future.
