Serving the last customer for the night, I let out an exhausted sigh as my shift came to an end. The bar was almost empty with only a couple of people left behind, scattered in arbitrary booths, hypnotised by the liquor. I scanned the area a final time, the dreary scene captured into my memory for the nth time, and my eyes landed on the lone girl sitting at the counter. She was sitting in her usual spot, her hands crossed on the countertop and her head plopped down on it making her chocolate brown hair messily spread on her shoulders and arms. She seemed to have fallen asleep as I saw no movement except the subtle rise and fall of her back with every breath she took. Compared to her situation, my exhaustion feels nothing anymore.
None of the other bartenders seemed to notice her. For them, she was just another drunk customer who had finally reached her limit and blacked out but I knew there was more to her than that. I slowly approached her, careful not to startle her out of her sleep and call out to her in an almost whisper,
"Umm, miss?"I didn't know what to say after that since I didn't know her name even though she came here the most frequent of all. Every alternate day I'd see her in the same spot, looking at me with a smile on her face.
Surprisingly, she woke up immediately at the sound of my voice as if she wasn't really sleeping all this time. She clumsily ran her fingers through her hair, trying to fix the mess they'd become and pasting her usual smile on her face, she finally glanced at me.
"Hey, you." She mumbled somewhat flirtatiously but it was evident she was drunk and probably was not thinking through her words.
"Um, the bar is about to close so you should head home before it gets too late." I announced in a professional voice but deep down I was worried if she could get home safely by herself without getting lost.
She frowned for a couple of seconds, trying to understand my words and then mumbled something vaguely to the effect of agreement and stepped off her chair but as soon as her feet touched the ground she stumbled and quickly grabbed the countertop toppling her empty glass in the process. She groaned and turned to restore the position of the glass to which I hastily responded with a "Don't worry about it." Upon hearing this she looked up at me again with the same smile, saying nothing. I wondered how she managed to smile with the same degree, regardless of her situation, every time she looked at me.
She took a couple more steps with great difficulty, wavering like the flame of a candle facing a gust of wind and then sat down again in an attempt to pull her mind out of her stupor. I was now completely sure that she could not carry herself home on her own. She needed help. I quickly said goodbye to my colleagues, grabbed my jacket and walked around the counter to where she was resting.
"Are you ok, miss?" I asked politely, trying to see her face but she had drowsily hung her head down.
"Kira. My name is Kira." She looked up at me and suddenly answered, briskly, to my surprise.
"Are you ok, miss Kira?" I asked again, this time adding her name.
"Ugh...you don't have to be so formal with me." She leaned on the counter, resting her forehead against her palm, seemingly fed up. I decided to leave the question and directly get to the point.
"If you want help getting home, I don't mind..." I offered hesitatingly.
She remained silent, pondering on my offer, for a good long while. I wondered if she had forgotten I was waiting for her reply and had started thinking about something else. Finally, she mumbled, "I don't want to trouble you."
"It's no trouble at all, believe me." I answered promptly.
"Well, then I don't think I have a choice since I can barely walk." She said hopping off the high bar chair. I firmly grasped her hand to which she reacted with a small gasp followed by a faint smile and we headed towards our destination.
As soon as we got out I looked for a cab. I found a cab after about five minutes, during which she didn't loosen her hold on my hand. I opened the car door, helped her get in and followed. She was getting sleepy again at this point and I had to ask her twice for her address. She mumbled it incoherently and after some initial difficulty, I deciphered it immediately repeating it to the cab driver.
As the cab speedily dashed through the streets I averted my gaze outside the window, absent-mindedly following the cityscape swiftly passing by. A peaceful calm had covered the atmosphere inside the cab. Kira was sleeping soundly beside me. After a few moments, she rested her head on my shoulder holding onto my arm like she would fall if she let go. I turned my gaze in her direction. If our eyes had met at that moment she would have smiled in the same lovely way she always did when she looked at me. I could imagine it so vividly that the thought etched a smile upon my face too. I was slightly surprised at my own action since I don't remember when was the last time I had smiled so spontaneously. With it, a memory made its way into my present train of thoughts.
It was a busy day at the bar and it hadn't been more than two weeks since I had started working there. I was overwhelmed by the crowd of people making a jumble of noises as they impatiently asked for their drinks. I was caught up in getting the agitated customers their orders when my eyes suddenly fell on her. She calmly sat in her place, showing no hint of agitation like the rest of the crowd, resting her palm against her cheek staring at me intently. Her peacefulness created a sharp contrast against the chaos that surrounded her and it took me by surprise for a moment. When I recovered from my momentary astonishment I reached her to ask if she needed anything.
"What will you have?" I asked in my usual professional but polite tone.
"You." She blurted immediately, gaping at me with utmost interest.
"Umm, excuse me?" I interjected in utter confusion. I couldn't believe I had heard her correctly. I tried to reason it must have been a mistake on my part since there was so much noise, yet I was sure of what I had heard.
In the meantime, she seemed to have realised what she had said and was now frantically looking left and right as if someone was going to rescue her from her situation. Feeling lost, she finally glanced back at me, helpless and embarrassed, and murmured, "Juice. I'll have some juice."
I tried to keep a poker face so as to not embarrass her anymore by acknowledging her previous remark and simply replied with a "Coming right up." In a couple minutes, I handed her what she had asked for to which she replied with a gloomy "Thank you." After that she appeared to be contemplating upon her comment with regret and mortification rest of the evening.
I kept seeing her every other day from that day onwards. She would always choose a spot at the countertop instead of the distant booths and sit there quietly for hours. Whenever she was present I always felt like I was the center of her attention , her gaze always directed at me. I never saw her talking to anybody else and every time I glanced at her, she returned the gesture with a warm smile. The only time I heard her voice was when I took her order or when I tried to make small talk with her one time which she had participated in happily.
The cab came to a stop and with it my train of thoughts. We had apparently arrived at our destination. Kira was still snuggled beside me, soundly sleeping. I softly woke her up and we got out of the cab. I helped her walk up to her front door where she took a full minute to take her keys out of her bag.
When she unlocked the door and I was assured she was out of any kind of harm, I turned to leave but I failed to take more than a step. I looked back to find that she was still holding my hand looking at me with sparkling eyes. I couldn't tell what could she want now and returned her gaze with confusion. She inched closer but stumbled in the process and I instinctively caught her. We were so close now, I noticed her cheeks had a pink glow on them.
"Thank you." she spoke softly and followed it by her usual smile. Before I knew, I was smiling too. She widened her eyes a little in reaction.
"Your smile is beautiful. Why don't you smile more often?" She remarked. I was taken aback for a moment with this sudden declaration of hers but I composed myself quickly. She was now staring at me warmly. I suddenly realised the position we were in, my hands still on her waist from when I caught her from falling. Heat rose up my cheeks at this realisation but she appeared to be unbothered by everything. Her eyes reflected evident admiration for me and her smile carried honesty and warmth. I found myself captivated by it even if just for a moment. I couldn't help but wonder about her unwavering dedication towards me, how she showed up at the bar almost every day just to see me and how I had never given it a thought until this moment even though I had observed her actions for so long. I had always dismissed it as mere playfulness but now I felt I shouldn't have done so without even getting to know her.
"What's wrong?" She muttered pulling me out of my thoughts. I focused my attention back at her and simply shook my head, mumbling "Nothing.". I realize we had been standing there long enough and I should leave. I leaned in closer and seeing this she closed her eyes. I softly placed a kiss on her cheek, whispered "Take care." and then I stepped back. She opened her eyes swiftly and blinked in wonder. I left her standing in a daze and retreated towards the street. As I reached the curb, I looked back at her one last time and found her looking at me lovingly, her hand on her cheek where I had kissed her. Next time I'll see her we'll have so many things to talk about.
