Wrong. Firstly the North WAS independent before Aegon and it was doing fine. Secondly claiming it has no resources and everyone would starve because of climate is ignorant to people who live in Artics conditions IRL (Northern Russia, Alaska, Canada, Siberia, Denmark, etc) or even in the canon of the books (Wildlings are even further north than the North is and they're doing fine, minus the White Walkers). Also trading is a thing. Although if you'll remember the North doesn't dabble with Southern customs, clothing or accessories. They have their own style and they rarely like, let alone rely on, Southern resources.

The North is larger than all the southern Kingdoms combined. It takes up over half of Westeros. Also they have the largest population of any other kingdom at around ~15 million people. There is a REASON Aegon wanted it in the first place, and a reason why no other king "cut it loose" and instead kept it as territory. If the North was such a financial drain the Iron Throne would have no motivation to keep it for ~300 years.
