a look on how elsy and chanâs relationship is :)
just how I did bimi moments, I wanted to do one for elsy and chan. hope you guys enjoy and please feel free to leave some feedback because it is always appreciated!
[8th member of got7/soloist]
1am calls
âwhat are you doing up so late?â
elsy smiled through the phone, deciding on facetiming chan. âI wanted to call you and knew youâd be up around this time.â she answered. âand been missing you.â
chanâs lip curved up into a small smile, trying not to get distracted by just that line elsy had said to him. elsy always had a way of saying things that chan always adored. âmiss you too.â chan said back, it being awhile that the two had seen in each other in person. with being so busy, they hadnât find the time to be with each other.
âyouâre always working.â elsy told him. âwhy donât you take a break right now?â
âbecause if I take a break I waste time to finish this song. and plus, Iâm almost finished with it.â
âoh bang chan, you have always been the same from when I first met you.â chan smiled once again, taking a small glance at elsy. she too had a grin on her face and that made chan smile wider as he let out a small laugh. âI just love what I do.â
elsy had let out a yawn as she laid her head down on her pillow. chan took notice of elsy rubbing her eyes. âyou should sleep, els.â the girl was quick to shake her head. âIâll sleep when you go back to your dorm, and sleep.â
âactually, itâs 1am. you should leave now. save your work for tomorrow.â
ânot happening, my love.â
elsy gave chan a soft smile after hearing those two words, deciding not to argue back with him. either way, elsy knew chan wouldnât listen and would continue working on music.
after a few more minutes of talking, silence came between the two as chan concentrated real hard on finishing his work. elsy was still laying in bed, slowly closing her eyes.
chan didnât realize elsy had fallen asleep on the call until he had closed his laptop. âwoo! finally finished-â he immediately stopped talking when seeing elsy sleeping peacefully. chan smiled at the girl, âgoodnight, my love.â
sick
âhow are you feeling now?â
ânot any better.â elsy sighed, letting out a cough right after. the girl had been sick for about two days and had yet to feel any better. she felt horrible and chan could hear it by her voice and as well as her cough. âI can barely sleep now.â
it was close to midnight and as much as elsy was tired, the girl just couldnât fall asleep. she was always woken up by her cough. âhave you eaten?â chan asked. elsy shook her head no. ânot really.â
âIâm coming over.â
âno! donât do that, bang chan.â elsy said. âI donât want you getting sick.â
âdoesnât matter, els. Iâm coming over right now.â he said. âbut itâs late!â elsy said right back. âsee you soon, my love.â elsy couldnât say one word as chan had finished the facetime call. she let out a cough, now waiting for chan to arrive soon.
and when a few minutes passed by, elsyâs door swung open with chan coming inside her apartment. elsy felt to weak to look up from laying on the couch, but she knew it was chan since he knew her passcode to enter. âoh look at you.â chan cooed as he sat a plastic bag down on the coffee table. he lifted elsyâs legs up so he could sit down and placed her legs on his lap. âstill not feeling your best?â elsy shook her head at his question, rubbing her eye. âno, and I havenât gotten much sleep.â
âhere, I brought you some soup.â chan said getting it out the bag, along with a spoon. âeat it, then you can go to sleep. Iâll be here with you.â
âyou donât have to do that, chris.â
âI want to, I canât leave you all alone like this.â he said. chan had taken the opportunity to be with elsy, instead of working on new music. âIâm not going to sleep until you do.â elsy gave him a soft smile as she slowly sat up, engulfing chan into a tight hug.
elsy ate the soup slowly while chan watched her. they had the tv on for background noise. and when she was finished eating, she rested her head on chanâs lap. âgo to sleep now. Iâll be here with you.â chan slowly ran his fingers through elsyâs hair. she had her arms wrapped around his torso as she slowly felt herself drift off to sleep.
soon after, chan fell asleep, sitting on the couch. elsy had finally had her full sleep time.
surprise
elsy took a seat once she got inside the venue. she was attending one of the stray kidsâ show in LA, but she hadnât told chan about it. so he didnât know elsy was there. âdo you think he suspects something?â she questioned hannah, her being there as well and being the only one to know elsy was attending. hannah knew elsy wanted to surprise chan. âI donât think so. does he think youâre in the states or something?â
âno, but I have been pretty dry with him.â elsy chuckled. âand he usually knows something is up when I only respond with one word messages.â
âweâll then I guess this will be a great surprise for him.â
after much screaming and cheering, as well as singing out loud, elsy and hannah were on their way backstage to stray kidsâ dressing room. they had left a little before the show ended, not wanting to get caught by the members. âI say we scare them.â hannah suggested, she laughed with elsy as the two found some hiding spots. elsy picked behind a sofa, while hannah picked behind a tall plant.
âthat was a great show!â felix said as he barged into the dressing room with the others following behind. âboo!â hannah jumped out, startling everyone. âhannah?!â chan exclaimed. âjesus, you scared me.â
âthatâs what we were hoping for.â she said.
âwe?â
âsurprise!â elsy slowly stood up on her feet from hiding behind the sofa, all eyes on her. the girl instantly made eye contact with chan and he ran towards her. the two engulfed each other into a tight hug. âoh my god! what are you doing here?!â
âwell you know I was going to be here in LA to record a few songs, so I thought maybe I should stopped by and see you.â elsy smiled as she wrapped her arms around chanâs neck. âyou did amazing out there.â she kissed chan on the lips, causing the boy to turn red. he tend to get shy when showing PDA around his members. âI definitely like this surprise.â he giggled.
his members began to tease at chan, causing him to turn even more red. âyah! turn around, everyone of you!â
caught
elsy giggled a lot more as she took another sip of her drink. she was sat on her couch next to chan, having a glass of wine. but the girl could feel herself becoming tipsy the more she drank, her face already being a tad bit red.
and she was laughing uncontrollably, which only caused chan to laugh with her.
the two decided to stay in, not wanting to go out like they had plan. which made elsy take out some wine. chan drank a few sips here and there but it was elsy who kept gulping down drinks. she had lost count after her fourth.
âI wonder when bam and yugyeom are getting here.â she said. âIâm almost done with this bottle.â
âand its only been you drinking, els.â chan chuckled. âmight want to keep it down, no?â
elsy shook her head as she chuckled. she went and grabbed chanâs face and brought their lips to each other. she moved in sync with his, not wanting to let go of chan anytime soon.
the girl even went ahead laid back on her couch, bringing chan down with her. elsy only broke the kiss to take off her shirt. âelsy-â
âitâs hot.â she giggled. the girl could see chanâs red face. he would tend to get a little shy when their make outs turned into this, but nothing more would happen. but tonight felt different and maybe the two were finally ready to take that next step.
it was chanâs turn to take off his shirt, which he rarely ever done. so that made elsy think tonight would be different. chan went back down to kiss elsy again, her arms wrapping around his neck and fingers running through his hair. right when elsy had unclasped her bra and was going to throw it on the ground, her front door and swung open.
âlee jiyeon- oh my god!â bambam shouted as he turned around quickly. elsy let out a scream as chan tried covering her chest. âwhat is going on- oh, elsy.â yugyeom came in from behind bambam, laughing out loud.
âso this is what you guys do alone? have sex?!â bambam exclaimed. he still was laughing hysterically. âno!â chan and elsy said in sync. âI swear, Iâm changing my key so you two never come barging in again!â elsy pushed chan off of her and grabbed his shirt to cover her chest and left the living room.
âIâm with it.â bambam said. âso I never have to witness this again in my life!â
chan let out a laugh as he sat on the couch. now the attention of the two was on him. âwhatâs so funny, lover boy?â bambam snorted. âyou think we want to come in and see you like that with our member.â
the three began to laugh as elsy came back with clothes on. âwow jiyeon, first jin-â
Subin looked around the room in confusion; a singular wall of mirrors with the rest being covered in off beige shade, it wasnât quite yellow enough to be beige and it wasnât quite green enough to baby poop. It was a hideous color. Who decided to paint this room? Subin couldnât help but squint at the autorious color combinations, it was all bright and overwhelming and it hurt his eyes.
âSeo Subin?â Subin heard the voice of a man call out, but he kept on staring at the poorly painted brown color. They were really starting to bother him. âArenât you Seo Subin?â The man spoke directly to him this time, startling Subin out of his daydream-like state.
âOh! Yes! Iâm so sorry, Iâm not used to being called by my Korean name.â Subin smiled sheepishly as he stood up to follow the man into the audition room. He had only come to this agency after being recruited at the underground rap shows by some man who went by the name of Park Jinyoung. It was a multi day competition and right now his team had made it into the final round, so he wasnât entirely sure what compelled him to accept the man - who Subin had mistakenly signed up for vocal lessons at Underground Shows Day Two: Explore the World Through Music Free Sessions - who told him to come audition at his company, JYP Entertainment. It was eleven oâclock at night, Subin had been competing all day long, he was struggling with his Korean due to the lack of sleep and many shots of soju, and the only Korean song he could remember all the words to at this late hour in the night was Tears by So Chan Wee and thatâs only because he had sung it fifteen times at karaoke with the Busan team last night. (Mind you, he was definitely drunk and definitely pitch-y.) He couldnât find one good reason for him to be here right now: auditioning to become a trainee at JYP Entertainment company, to maybe debut in a K-Pop group, when his entire life was already being laid out for him.
But right on cue, when the man sat down behind the long pull out table next to two women, Subin bowed and introduced himself as a seventeen year old native Australian boy who currently spent his time divided between Seoul and Adelaide. And when he was told to, he opened his mouth to sing the song that he had somewhat - if belting out the lyrics after four illegally drunken beers with the Busan Hip Hop team counts as preparing - prepared for the judges. ExceptâŚ.Subin is now belatedly realizing in his head that the song he is singing is not, in fact, Tears by So Chan Wee but it is, in fact, Always Be My Baby by Mariah Carey (Which Subin totally did not listen to on repeat on the taxi ride over to the building.). Taking a deep breath between the verse and the chorus, knowing itâs too late to go back now, Subin gives it all heâs got and tries his best to finish off the song strong. Except, now heâs finished and the judges are just staring at him.
âUhmâŚ.How did I do?â Subin asks nervously, ready to let his shaky knees win and collapse to the ground. One of the judges snaps out a daze of some sort, staring at the young boy with what appears to be fondness, and smiles brightly.
âYouâve definitely passed!â The woman grins, âButâŚ.Could you perhaps sing another song for us?â
âI told you he was great! Didnât I tell you guys?â The man suddenly began to boast to the woman sitting next to him, tapping her arm repeatedly. Subin was confused again. What was happening?
âSure?â Subin said, maybe after another song theyâll tell him whatâs happening? This time when Subin opened up his mouth to sing, he made sure he was singing Tears by So Chan Wee.
Everyoneâs first impression regarding Got7âs leader was the same but as the years passed, Jaebeomâs intimidating aura has toned down a bit - thanks to the people he is surrounded with.Â
The moment JYPe told him and the rest of the members about their plans, Jaebeom already knew who Violet is. He could say that he was a fan of her works - the girl is like a mixture of Heize and Zico but more in a calmer form. He acknowledged her skills of producing lyrics and music.
But Jaebeom didnât know Violetâs off-stage persona, he learned that fans call her real name off-stage. He just knows about her stage persona. Turns out that she is a shy ball of sunshine.Â
After getting to know her more and thanks to his girlfriend who helped to break that awkward wall, Jaebeom treated Hyeseon just like how he treats the other members but he has a soft spot for her and he tends to keep an eye on her.
Honestly, he had mixed feelings with the PRâs team but he trusted JYPe in-regards with the idea. He didnât hate the idea but heâs not against it.Â
Along with Jaebeom and another 2 members, Mark somehow knew about Violet. Sadly, he knows her through the news that she was hospitalized - at the same time it taught Mark to be more mindful of what he is going to say to her in the near future, not that he is not mindful.
It was normal for him to think that the girl is going to be sensitive but he didnât know that sheâs the opposite. Hyeseon is the opposite of sensitive regarding the situation she had faced - in fact, she embraced it and she said that sheâs not ashamed of it nor she is proud, thatâs because that is what she felt at that time and she is merely human.
Mark looks up to her in that expect and it made him to be protective of her - hence he isnât afraid to show it. Compared to his first meeting with her, Mark is considered one of Hyeseonâs protectors. (That includes Jaebeom and another 2 members.)
Not to mention that Hyeseon is the closest with Ahrin - which makes Mark extremely happy that Ahrin along with the other 6 bodyguards saved her life and Hyeseon mentioned to him that Ahrin is a keeper.
To think that he was the only one excited makes him nervous on meeting this Violet girl. He was curious why there were a few nervous faces on his other memberâs faces too - especially Jaebeom and Jinyoung.
Jackson thought that they hated the idea but after seeing how shy and friendly JJP is towards her - it made Jacksonâs friendly and just extroverted aura emerge and thankfully, Hyeseon was at the same level of energy as him.
But after spending time with her, Jackson realized that she was more than that. He was actually shocked that she has that split persona when he finds out she had a rough past - both from his members, Violet herself and more in depth and clearly - from his bodyguard-girlfriend.
He was the last one to know that his bodyguard-girlfriend is friends with Hyeseon, causing him to be so flustered when seeing Chaeun kissing Hyeseon on the cheek.
Since both Jackson and Hyeseon produce their own lyrics and music, they often had worked together such as featuring on each other songs.
He just went along with the idea of JYP because by now, he honestly just gave up with JYPE itself. As long as Got7 and his members arenât harmed, he is fine. But he canât help but slightly be curious on how the group works with a girl in the group.
Jinyoung was the only member who didnât talk to her - because he was quietly observing Hyeseon, in terms of her personality. He, along with his Got7 members, has met Hyeseon in MAMA Awards in 2015 and 2016 - MAMA Awards 2017 was the last year that he would see her and he finds it odd. Then he found out from his manager about the news of the girl being hospitalized as she tried to take her own life.
Since that day, the news made Jinyoung to lessen his savageness - learning that his words might hurt people, he was extra careful to the people he is surrounded with.
Thatâs what Jinyoung remembered as soon as he met Hyeseon for the first time and he doesnât say much but as they spent time together, Jinyoung opened up to her and he would always keep an eye on her, at the same time he had vowed to his bodyguard-girlfriend that he would take care of Hyeseon from those hateful netizens.
Just like Mark, Hyeseon has mentioned Eunhee to Jinyoung and the new member could see that Jinyoung really loves his bodyguard-girlfriend - seeing that he always has his ears turned red whenever she mentions Eunhee.
Youngjae was extremely confused but he just went along with the JYPEâs idea. He was confused at the same time he was curious. But deep down, Youngjae was worried that he might turn awkward when they were going to meet.
His worries immediately washed away after meeting Hyeseon face to face - he could feel that positive vibes of hers as they bowed to each other and they instantly hit it off, maybe because Youngjae could relate to her so much.
Youngjae always supported Hyeseon, both of them are like close friends. He tends to stick to her during schedules that they had together. He even visited Hyeseon during her dance training breaks - when Hyeseon has to learn Got7âs discography.
Youngjae knows the girl was vocally talented and he acknowledges it after fans wanted him to collaborate with her. He knows that Hyeseon is struggling with their choreography - and he could totally relate.
Just like other older members, Youngjae is particularly protective of Hyeseon, knowing what had happened to her - and sometimes he wonders if this is how his bodyguard-girlfriend felt, during the times when she had to keep an eye on him during the âsasaengâ incident.
Bambam was shook, yes shook. He kind of liked the idea of a girl being in the group, at the same time he was curious.Â
Then his curiosity immediately shuts down as it becomes excitement. When the name of the girl came out, he kept asking the executives if they are really adding her in - because he didnât want them to keep his hopes up.Â
It was finalised and Bambam was so happy and both of them met, Bambam immediately broke that awkward barrier by talking to Hyeseon both in Thai and English - knowing that the girl has Thai blood in her. He felt at home since there was someone like him.Â
The both of them instantly hit it off and Hyeseon decided to tell him to drop the formalities since both of them are Thaiâs and she feels that it was unnecessary since she was just a year older than him.
Bambam really likes her works - her own written songs and her own producing. He even wants to collaborate with her - both in English and in Thai.
After spending more time with her, Bambam somehow found out about her depression from Hyeseon herself since he got curious about Hyeseon drinking a few anti-depressants.
Seeing how his hyungs reacted, itâs safe that Yugyeom doesnât mind the idea of a girl joining but he instantly thinks about their choreography because he himself knows that it was intense and he was worried for the new member.
Somehow he got information about Hyeseon from Bambam and he was relieved that the girl had her own training and he was shocked that Hyeseon has 5 years of training. The leader had almost 3 years of training. Hyeseon could have been Yugyeomâs senior.
Yugyeom was so shy when he met Hyeseon face to face. He then realized that Hyeseon was a replica of Jackson but she was the laid back version. Whenever thereâs Bambam, there will always be Yugyeom so either one would always appear when they hangout - especially for Hyeseonâs dance practices.
Yugyeom didnât hesitate to support Hyeseon since she needed help regarding her dancing skills - although he told her that Hyeseon was doing great, he believes that Hyeseon keeps practicing, she would reach his level.
Though Yugyeom is the youngest, he is aware of what Hyeseon has gone through - which is thanks to Bambam, and he felt that it is his duty to protect Hyeseon also keeping an eye from haters since he treats Hyeseon like his own older sister.
Jiah is 2/4 of the OCâs born and raised in Australia
Farm girl 1/2
Jiah has two little brothers (Hitoshi and Daehyun)
Her brother Hitoshi (2003) is adopted from Japan and as he was young they had to learn Japanese to help him learn English
Jiah is the most protective older sister of both brothers and especially of Daehyun (2009) who is deaf
Sheâs known as the sunshine of Got7 because of her giant grin whenever sheâs excited
Is known as the mum friend among young / new idols and idol groups
Swears sheâs adopted half of her companies new trainees. (Everyone calls her mum)
Sheâs the scariest member when angry
Gets the angriest over hate and discrimination and people have witnessed said anger
Fans call her Mumma Wolf (itâs her favourite animal)
Is a very talented instrumentalist and can pick up a new instrument and play it within the day
Bass is her favourite along with drums, piano and guitar
She can also play the cello because concert band in high school needed a cellist and she learns fast
Sheâs read all the fan fiction people write and send in (all the OCâs have none of you are safe)
Is a giant book worm, loves reading but she also loves sleeping so itâs a big fight between what she wants to do the most
A lot of idols have a crush on her and she gets flustered every time she gets told
Easily flustered, doesnât take compliments well
But can smoothly give you a compliment
Is actually a bit of a flirt depending on her mood
Very playful and always makes inside jokes with each person she meets
Sheâs actually quite close friends with Kanghyun of Onewe
Idols she biases: Onewe Cya, Oneus Keonhee, Skz Han, NCT Jeno and Renjun
Isnât shy about her admiration for Onewe and Oneus
Is shy about admitting that she likes Cya
Relationship with her band
Sees a lot of them like older brothers that she likes to tease
Mark: sees him as her oldest brother, she even calls him hyung- but thatâs mostly because she doesnât like calling people oppa
They are seen out and about a lot together mostly for grocery shopping though - when they lived in the dorms
Jaebum: treats him like a second father figure and jokingly calls him dad teases him and Jinyoung the most with stupid inside jokes
Probably seen a lot looking at animals and pouting about how they want more cats (and dogs) but that theyâve reached the threshold of animals allowed at their dorm đ
Jinyoung: she called him mum and thatâs how the entire fandom started calling him mum - itâs her fault blame her. She teases him all the time about it
Both are actors and have appeared in a few dramas together, most of the time Jiah is off doing different dramas to Jinyoung though that she doesnât want them watching
Jackson: best friends, absolute chaos buddies and have no remorse when it comes to teasing everyone else
Heâs the only one thatâs seen any of her films (that she knows of) because he came with her to a premiere- peep a sex scene that she was told got cut and now heâs scarred for life
Youngjae: honestly she motherâs him, he doesnât have a tough bone at all when sheâs around so sheâs always worried for him
He trusts her the most with coco and always asks her to take care of the precious doggie. He also likes to talk to her about a lot of deep stuff when it comes to family.
BamBam: ultimate sibling rivalry. Inside jokes, bringing up each otherâs pasts, throwing things you name it thatâs them
When they arenât being children sheâs usually taking care of his cats or heâs taking her shopping to update her wardrobe as itâs âtastelessâ in his opinion
Leave her be she likes being barefoot, and wearing baggy clothes when no one else is around let her not wear pants or a bra pls
Yugyeom: these two are probably the closest out of all of them. Have inside jokes that only they know and are quite clingy - he makes her feel safe
If sheâs not crying to Mark about her stresses sheâs crying to Yugyeom who puts her in the biggest hug and tries to make her laugh- literally melts when heâs with her.
Other idols
DKB are her children fight her, sheâs practically adopted Junseo and Yuku
Heechan has a crush on her and sheâs fucking oblivious to it
NCTâs Jungwoo is close to her theyâve been friends for a while.
She also knows Yuta as her brother Hitoshi is a fan- she got them to meet
Big fan of Dream and WayV
Her and my other OCâs all grew up together, same town, same school etc
With Skz Chan features her in Chanâs rooms just for fun because he can and they have started an Aussie segment of just her him and Felix
Like many other idols have Jeongin called her mum once instead of her name during a vlive and she lost it when she found out
No one has let him live it down
Sheâs a pretty big fan of Oneus she met Hwanwoong first backstage of a live show and she was so nervous to meet him she stuttered said he was pretty and ran BamBam wonât let that go
When she met all of Oneus she was still pretty nervous but didnât run away. Keonhee however was figiting and fighting the urge to do exactly the same as her and yell âyouâre prettyâ
Meeting Onewe was hilarious, she already knows Kanghyun- their motherâs being friends, sheâd been in the area and decided to say hello to him and Oneus
Big surprise to them, she should have expected to see Onewe and not just Kanghyun but once again got super nervous
According to Kanghyun she bullies him to which she responds you are pretty much my brother itâs expected at this point
Has a fat crush on Cya- lets be real who doesnât if you donât you are lying to yourself
Iâm joking đđ
Confessed to him later down the track my writing a song for him and performing it at a solo comeback
Kanghyun definitely had to tell him that it was about him đ
Her friends and family are very supportive of her job

A/N: Finally finished (with extra cheese!) after having sat in my drafts for weeks! This is probably best to read on desktop rather than on mobile since mobile editing is being wonky. Decided to try something new with the OC. Also realized I could kill three birds with one stone by fulfilling three requests in this imagine. Enjoy!
âyour mark imagine about the car ride made me tear up, your writing is so good ! i was wondering if you could write another fluffy mark drabble about a girl who is super focused on school and doesnât rlly have any friends, but suddenly mark comes around and insists on being her friend, but she doesnât want any friends. so sheâs totally in denial when itâs obvious he likes her and she likes him. dk if that made much sense but hopefully it did to you! thank u sm in advance <3â
ââ
âKang Jisoo? Are you related toââ
âYes, sheâs my sister.â Jisoo took her uniform from the teacher with a short bow and not another word.
She was used to it, expected it every time she entered a new space.
âOh Kang Jisoo, you just got your uniform? Great, you can sit right over here by the window!â The giddy teacher chirped. Jisoo slowly made her way to the only empty seat, ignoring the stares from her new classmates as she passed. âWhat a coincidence! You know, Jiwoo also sat there when she was in my class two years ago!â
Jisoo gave a feeble laugh. âYes, well...â
âIâm sure youâll be a delight to have in class just like she was!â The teacher said before addressing the rest of the class. âWell, now that weâre all here, letâs get started. Welcome to high school orientation everyone! You will all be my homeroom students for the year...â
For Jisoo, it was just another day stuck in the the shadows.
ââ
âHello, are you even listening?â
Mark glanced at the boy sitting in front of him before letting out a bored sigh. âYes Jackson, you did look so cool at your match yesterday.â
âUgh you werenât even listening!â Jackson groaned, putting his head down on the table in defeat. âI've been asking if you could volunteer for the fencing teamâs carwash fundraiser this weekend since one of our members canât make it.â
âYeah sure, whatever,â Mark replied dismissively, returning his gaze past Jackson. For Mark, it was just another day at lunch with some of his closest friends. Jackson would blab about some random topic of the day while the others would passively listen as they ate, occasionally taking jabs at the talkative boy.
Jinyoung, sitting next to Mark, had noticed between bites of his lunch that Mark had been checked out of their groupâs usual silly conversation. He turned to see where the boy was staring and let out a snicker. âWhy are you staring at Kang Jisoo?â
Jackson, being the King of Subtlety, quickly whipped his head around to the object of Markâs attention. Jisoo was sitting alone at her usual spot a few tables down, completely engrossed in the book she was reading for a class. She would take a sip out of her milk carton every so often, but never put her book down, completely unaware of the stares she was getting. Jisoo was often seen eating by herself during lunch, so Jackson thought it was odd how Mark was paying her mind that day. âOh? Does someone have a thing for Ms. Kang?â
âJisoo? Thatâs her name?â
âYou donât know her?â Jaebum, usually half-present during these lunchtime conversations, looked at Mark incredulously. âItâs the last year of high school!â
âExactly! I know I only transferred here in the second year, but donât you think itâs weird how Iâve never seen her before? Or wouldnât think of talking to her? Itâs our last year yet...JB, do you know who that is?â Mark quizzed his friend, pointing to a boy tossing his trash.
âUh...I actually donât know...I think I have him in bio?â
âAnd Jackson! That girl over there!â Mark pointed to another girl walking into the cafeteria. âWhatâs her name?â
âKiso? Miso?â Jackson scratched his head in confusion.
Jinyoung raised an eyebrow at Mark. âIs this your way of telling us youâre tired of us?â
âOf course not,â Mark assured. âAll Iâm saying is that even though our school is so small, we donât even know our own classmates. Weâve been stuck in a bubble, not that thereâs anything wrong with our group, but itâs our last year of high school. I think we should try getting to know our own class, donât you think? JB, Mr. Class President, you of all people should agree.â
âYou do have a point,â Jaebum agreed pensively. âSo what? Are you going to try and be best friends with Jisoo now?â
Jinyoung sneered. âYeah, good luck with trying to even talk to her.â
Mark looked at the three boys curiously. âWhat do you mean?â
âThat girl will not give you the time of day unless you are a textbook,â Jackson joked, going back to picking at his food. âSheâs all about school and grades so she doesnât have a lot of friends. Or any friends, really.â
âSee, all the more reason to try,â Mark contended.
âIâm surprised you donât at least know of her,â Jinyoung said thoughtfully, hand under his chin. âDonât you know her sister?â
âWhoâs her sister?â The simple question was met with audible gasps.
âWait, you really donât know?!â Jackson looked around, making sure Jisooâthough far away and still not paying attention to anything around herâwasnât listening. âHer sister isââ
âHey Jackson!â A boy had sidled up to their table, notebook in hand. âHere are those notes you asked for earlier.â
âOh thanks man!â Jackson took the notes and brought the boy in for a pound hug. âSee you in math!â
âYouâre hilarious! Iâll see you in English!â The boy chuckled before heading off. The three friends looked at Jackson with amused expressions.
âYou have no idea who that is, do you?â Mark asked dryly.
Jackson simply shrugged. âI could have sworn the only class I needed notes on was math.â
ââ
The next day, Mark made it a point to hunt down Jisoo. He didnât know why he was particularly drawn to attempt befriending her, perhaps it was the challenge? Mark wanted to prove his friends wrong. Was it so bad to want to try making new friends? Maybe she just didnât have a lot of friends because people were jerks. And Mark wasnât a jerk, he got along with people really well, even if he was the more soft-spoken one in his friend group. But there was a first time for everything. Mark could break out of his shell and make a new friend.
But if he didnât know anything about her before, how was he supposed to find her now?
Luckily he had made it a point to actually look up when he was walking into his classes today rather than scroll on his phone as he strolled in, because he finally spotted her sitting in the back of the classroomânose shoved in another bookâduring his third period.
âHi, is this seat taken?â
Jisoo glanced at the seat next to her. âNo, go ahead,â she replied, removing her backpack from the chair so Mark could slide in next to her. Before she could return to reading, Mark spoke up again.
âThanks. Iâm Mark, by the way.â He stuck a hand out to Jisoo. Â
She only smiled at his hand, returning her attention back to her book. âMark, I know who you are.â
He shyly retreated his hand to his lap. âYou do?â
âYeah, Iâve only been sitting a few rows behind you the whole year.â She smirked, eyes still glued to the pages before her.
âOh, butââ
âJust because you donât know me doesnât mean I donât know you,â Jisoo interrupted, glancing at the boy in amusement.
âOh.â Mark didnât expect their first interaction to turn out this way. He imagined Jisoo to be more...shy and soft-spoken. Lost when it came to people. Kind of like him, but more so. He didnât expect her to bite. Dumbfounded but determined, Mark pressed on. âI know you like reading. What are you reading now?â
âWhat are you trying right now, Mark Tuan?â Jisoo put her book down and gave Mark a bemused expression. âYouâve never spoken to me a day in your whole life, despite us being in the same Honors English class for the last three years, and now youâre coming up to me asking what Iâm reading?â
Mark looked up at Jisoo ashamedly, suddenly feeling small under her gaze. âItâs never too late to make new friends, is it?â
Her gaze softened a bit. âItâs a book of poems in English. Mrs. Baek let me borrow it to practice reading English prose.â
âOh, cool.â Mark nodded, wanting to relate. âSo do you like writing? Are you planning to go into it after you graduate?â
Jisoo shook her head and gave Mark a wry smile. âYou donât need to try so hard Mark, I donât need your pity.â
Mark was silent for a moment. âI wasnât taking pity on you. I was just thinking about how weird it was that weâve been in the same classes but I didnât know you, though I should, and thatâs why I wanted to talk to you.â He averted his attention to the front of the classroom. âIâm sorry for bothering you.â
Jisoo continued reading until the silence became too unbearable for her to handle.Â
âDo you really not know who I am?â
Mark shook his head. âShould I? You know, I didnât imagine you as the type to have an ego.â
She grinned to herself at the boyâs cluelessness. How refreshing. âI do like writing, but I may go more into journalism later. What about you? What are you thinking of doing, Mark?â
Mark returned the smile, giving Jisoo his full attention. âWell Iâm glad you asked...â
ââ
The usually empty desk next to Jisoo in her English class had become Markâs self-assigned seat. Every day at the beginning of class, he would cheerfully slide into his seat as she was hovered over some assignment due the following week.Â
âGood morning Jisoo!â
âGood morning Mark,â Jisoo would greet back quietly with a small nod before returning to her work.Â
Despite having sat next to her for weeks, Mark felt he had barely learned anything about Jisoo. Jisoo had a tendencyâand was really good at doing it without him noticingâto deflect questions back onto Mark whenever heâd ask questions about herself. When he asked her what she liked to do for fun outside of school, she had said she didnât have much free time because of all the work she had to do for her other classes.
âBut what about you Mark?â Jisoo asked before Mark could press on. âYouâre on the volleyball team, arenât you? Whatâs that like? When did you start playing?â
Seeing as only fifty minutes of class every day was not enough for Mark to get closer to Jisoo, and Jisoo would quickly leave to her next class as soon as that one was over, Mark knew he had to try even harder.Â
Which brought him to lunch today.Â
âSo are they like...together now? Or something?â Jackson, Jinyoung, and Jaebum were baffled as they watched the unusual pair sitting together tables away from theirs. âMark always sits with us during lunch.â
âOf course not, Mark would have told us if he was seeing someone,â Jinyoung assured Jackson, though he was half-convincing himself. His friend wasnât one to step out and talk to others, but here Mark was, speaking animatedly to Jisoo. âI guess he was serious about trying to make new friends.â
âStill, this is the first time Iâve ever seen him talk to her,â Jaebum stated confusedly. âWith Jisoo, Mark looks almost...outgoing.â
âSee Mark, your friends think this is weird too.â
âWhat do you mean?â Jisoo nudged her head in the the direction of the three boys burning holes into the back of Markâs head. They immediately busied themselves as Mark turned around, attempting to seem like they werenât staring. Mark chuckled as he turned back to Jisoo. âSo what? They think everything I do is weird. They canât talk though, theyâre really weird too.â
âNo wonder you guys are friends,â Jisoo stated pointedly, stabbing at her salad. âSo why arenât you sitting with them right now?â
âWhy? I canât sit with my other friends?â
Jisoo looked at Mark skeptically. âYou think weâre friends friends? You sit next to me in English and we talk before class starts.âÂ
âHey, I told you about the time I split my pants in elementary school in front of my crush, and not even the guys know that,â Mark explains, darting his eyes at the aforementioned boys. âWe are friends.âÂ
Jisoo studied Markâs face for any sign of insincerity before relenting. âOkay Mark Tuan, Iâll bite. So what brings you here to sit with me today of all days?âÂ
Mark simply shrugged, finally allowing himself to start eating. âWell I realized that you know a lot about me, but I wanted to know more about you.â
âWhat do you want to know?â Jisoo closed her notebook, giving Mark her undivided attention. It didnât seem like Mark was going to budge, so she knew there was no point in trying to get some studying done for tomorrowâs quiz. Jisoo was also just genuinely curious as to what Mark was getting at.Â
âOh! Uh...â His eyes darted around as if searching the cafeteria for the right question. Mark hadnât expected her to open up that easily. âWhat is your favorite...color?â
âMustard yellow.â
âWhy?â
And thatâs how it started. Jisoo went into a story of she had an affinity for fall colors and was compelled to buy everything she saw in those shades. Jisoo and Mark amicably went back and forth sharing stories of the random things about them, Mark feeling touched by the sentiment that these were now things only he knew. Jisoo was obviously very closed-off so Mark felt a sense of accomplishment with how much she was sharing with him, trusting with him, in such a short amount of time. Judging by how rarely he saw Jisoo talking to others, he thought that people also knew very little about her. Though he did vaguely remember the guys saying something about knowing herâ
âSo what does your family look like?â Mark asked after finishing a story about how his sisters used to dress him up when he was younger. âI think Jackson or Jinyoung mentioned something before about you having a sister too?â
The small smile that had inched its way onto Jisooâs face instantly dropped and she looked almost panicked. She abruptly got up from her seat and started to gather her things. âI should probably start getting to my next class, itâs a bit of a walk.âÂ
Mark frowned at her sudden disposition. âSorry, did Iââ
She gave a small bow before leaving him. âSee you tomorrow!â
He sat there watching Jisooâs retreating form, completely dumbfounded by what just happened. Mark turned around, meeting the now-shameless stares of his friends who had watched the whole interaction happen. The three of them just shrugged at Mark, at a greater loss than he was.Â
ââ
Jisoo found herself inexplicably looking forward to her daily interactions with Mark.Â
After she brushed him off that day in the cafeteria, she was really worried about how she was going to talk to him ever againâJisoo was even more shocked that she wanted to talk to himâbut it turned out that she had nothing to worry about. The following day, Mark had sat next to her during class like usual and talked to her normally, asking if she had understood the assigned reading. He never mentioned anything about family ever again, conversing happily with her as if the end of their lunch together had never happened.
Thatâs when Jisoo realized she considered Mark a friend.Â
And it was normal for friends to look forward to seeing their friends every day, right?
âGood morning,â she greeted teasingly as Mark lazily slid into his seat. âYou look awful. Did you stay up late playing video games for the fourth night straight this week?âÂ
âVery funny. Itâs the only way I can play with friends in other timezones.â He laid his cheek on the desk and side-eyed her. âBut Iâm glad youâre enjoying this.âÂ
âOh no, it pains me to see you looking tired. It means you wonât be listening to me nagging you to put as much effort into your homework as you do video games.â Mark rolled his eyes before rolling his head on the desk so that he was facedown. Jisoo let out a hearty laugh as she finally took notice of his outfit. âMark, were you too tired to even turn the lights on this morning? You look like you dressed yourself in the dark!â
âWait, what do you mean?â He shot up in his seat and looked down at his clothes.
âYour shirtâs inside-out! Howâd you even button up your shirt this morning?!âÂ
Mark quickly put on his cardigan, slightly hiding his little mishap. âOh my god, Iâve been walking around like this all morning, and no one told me anything!â Jisoo, amid her fit of giggles at her friendâs troubles, wiped away the stray tears that had formed in her eyes. Her laughter subsided when she noticed Mark silently staring at her, an impish smile quirked on his lips.Â
âWhat?âÂ
âYou look prettier when you laugh. You should do more of that.â
Jisooâs face quickly flushed. âPrettier? What do you mean by âprettyâ?â
âWhat do you mean what do I mean? Youâre pretty!â Mark shook his head and chuckled. âOh wait I remember, the Kang Jisoo has a bit of an ego. Fine, when you laugh, youâre so beautiful,â Mark corrected himself with another laugh. âHappy now?â
Mark broke into more fits of laughter as he noticed Jisooâs face turning shades darker by the second. She slouched in her seat and covered her face with her hands. âMark, why would you just say that so easily? What am I supposed to do about it?!â To Jisoo, Mark had said it as if he were talking about the weather.Â
âI donât know, I think itâs Jacksonâs sappiness rubbing off on me. Weâve been hanging out too much lately,â Mark joked, turning to the front of the classroom as Mrs. Baek walked in, signaling the start of the period. For the first time ever, Jisoo couldnât focus on the lesson, Mrs. Baekâs words going in one ear and out the other.Â
It was also normal for friends to call their friends beautiful, right?
ââ
Jisoo told herself she only let Mark walk with her home because her house was already on the way to his and the days were getting shorter. Itâs better for a girl to walk home with someone, especially a guy, when it was starting to get dark, of course.Â
And Mark most certainly forced his jacket onto her when a gust of wind had whipped past them that afternoon. She hadnât asked to use it and she definitely did not exaggerate how cold she was by wrapping her arms around herself so that Mark would notice. Jisoo really was cold and Mark, being the nice friend that he was, had forced his jacket over her.Â
âSee if I werenât walking with you, youâd be freezing!â
Jisoo rolled her eyes as she returned the jacket to Mark. âWe were a block away from my house, I think I would have been fine.âÂ
âYeah, yeah whatever you say,â Mark replied with a sneer, waving you off. âSee you tomorrow?â
âYeah, if you donât oversleep and actually make it tomorrow,â Jisoo joked, earning a playful shove from Mark. âByeââ
âJisoo, youâre home!âÂ
A middle-aged woman donning an apron and with fresh dusts of what seemed to be flour on her face had emerged from Jisooâs front door.
âOh Mom, yes, I just got back.âÂ
The older woman walked up to Jisoo, lacing Jisooâs fingers with hers and beaming brightly. âI just got the best news today! Weâve got a special surprise arriving tonight!â
Jisoo smiled as she dashed her finger across her momâs cheek and flicked the powder off. âIs that why youâre going crazy in the kitchen?â
Her mom nodded. âItâs not every day we get this surprise, so weâre having a feast tonight.â She looked behind Jisoo to see Mark still standing there in the walkway, watching the interaction. He waved when Jisooâs mom looked his way. âOh! Is this a friend from school?â
Jisoo gave a nervous laugh. âYes, well...â She nudged her head and gave Mark a slightly-panicked look, motioning for him to come over. âThis is Mark Tuan from my Honors English class. He lives a few blocks that way so we walk home together sometimes.â
Mark stuck his hand out to the older woman. âItâs nice to meet you, Mrs. Kang.â
She gladly took it, shaking his hand profusely. âVery nice to meet you, Mark! You must join us for dinner, I made a lot of food and this is the first time Iâve met one of Jisooâs high school friends. More of a reason to celebrate!â
âNo Mom, Mark is really busyââ Ignoring Jisooâs protests and before Mark could get a word in, her mom had dragged the two of them into the house.Â
Jisooâs house was simply decorated, the mustard yellow walls doing most of the eye-catching. It was warm and cozy as the smell of her momâs cooking wafted in the air. One thing Mark noted to himself was that he couldnât spot any family pictures anywhere.Â
âI think Iâll be learning more about you today than I have in all the time Iâve known you,â Mark teased, giving Jisoo a nudge as her mom ushered them to the living room.Â
âWhatever you do, donât ask too many questions, answer all of my parentsâ if they have anyâbut be vague when you answerâand just give me your food when my momâs not looking if you canât finish it,â Jisoo hissed quietly as she pulled Mark to sit on the couch. She turned back to her mom. âSo whatâs the surprise?â
The older woman shook her head, a mischievous glint in her eyes. âWell it wouldnât be a surprise if I told you, now would it? Your father is picking it up right now.â She was about to return to the kitchen but quickly turned back to Jisoo. âI almost forgot! Dear, could you go over to Mrs. So next door? I asked her to fix my pants and was supposed to pick it up today before she went on her trip with Mr. So, but I still have so much to cook.â
âI can come with,â Mark volunteered.Â
Jisoo gave him a hesitant look. âNo...you better not. Mrs. So gets weird about strangers coming over. You can just relax, Iâll be right back.â
Mark went to join Jisooâs mom in the kitchen. âMrs. Kang, I can help you finish cooking or set the table while waiting.â
She clapped her hands gleefully. âOh, Iâd appreciate that Mark! You can help me make the cheesecake, it wonât take too long to make. Hereâs an apron!â Mrs. Kang lowered her voice to Jisoo as Mark busied himself with the apron. âHeâs handsome. Bring him around more often.âÂ
âMom!â Jisoo gave her mom a frightened look, silently ordering her to stop, before turning to Mark. She stifled back a laugh as she noticed he was wearing her dadâs âkiss the cookâ apron. âIâll be back. Donât make too much of a mess.âÂ
Jisoo was at Mrs. Soâs longer than expected. As soon as she rung her doorbell and the older woman came to the door, Jisoo found herself answering a parade of questions. Mrs. So claimed to have not seen Jisoo in so long and wanted to catch up, even though Jisoo would sometimes join her mom and the other older women in the neighborhood for weekly tea. Mrs. So had occupied Jisoo with so many questions that she had almost forgot the reason why she was there.Â
Taking a breath after finally leaving Mrs. Soâs with her momâs pants in hand, Jisoo headed back to her house, hoping her mom wasnât similarly bombarding Mark with questions or embarrassing stories about her. She was also really looking forward to whatever surprise her parents had in store. Perhaps it had arrived when she was gone? Maybe they were finally getting a dog? With that exciting prospect in mind, Jisoo happily bounded to her doorstep and opened her front door, ready to be greeted with aâ
âSurprise! Iâm home!â
Frozen in her spot, Jisoo allowed herself to be engulfed in a bone-crushing hug by her older sister.Â
âUnnie...youâreââ
Suddenly Mark emerged from the kitchen, looking as giddy as a kid at a candy store. âJisoo! I didnât realize your sister was the Kang Jiwoo! I see her on tv all the time! I should have put two and two together. Why didnât you tell me?âÂ
âYes, well...â Before she could even begin to formulate an answer, Mrs. Kang had enjoyed them in the foyer.
âCome and take a seat before the food gets cold!â She ordered, ushering the kids into the dining room. âJiwoo dear, you must be starving! I made all your favorites!â
Jisoo felt like a lost scubadiver with only a couple of breaths left in her oxygen tank, a few seconds away from drowning.
She wanted to scream. She wanted to get away. But she could only sit there and watch silently as Jiwoo seemed to bewitch her friend at the dinner table like she did with everyone else she encountered. Jisoo couldnât even enjoy her momâs cooking.Â
âThis is top secret information, so keep this on the down low,â Jisoo advised jokingly as Mark pretended to zip his lips. âBut weâre shooting the music video for our comeback single. One of the locations is a half hour away, and the other girls are just staying at a hotel, but I decided it was close enough for me to come home and spend the night.â
Mark had stars in his eyes as he conversed with Jiwoo. âWow, a comeback? You must be super busy! You probably have a tour coming up too! I saw some footage from your concerts overseas before on the news, you guys got really big!âÂ
Jiwoo gave a shy laugh, looking down at her plate in modesty. âYes, well...â
âJisoo does that too!â Mark pointed out, turning to the silent girl next to him. âYou probably get it from her, donât you?â Jisoo could only shrug as she occupied herself by tossing the food around on her plate, not wanting to answer and confirm his speculation.Â
âOh, Jisoo gets a lot of things from me,â Jiwoo added with a lighthearted laugh. âWhen we were younger, she used to always follow me around and copied whatever I did. I remember I used to get so annoyed when sheâd mimic what Iâd say.â
âReally, she used to copy you?â Mark looked back and forth between the sisters. âBut you two are nothing alike!â
Mark had no ill-intent behind them, but as those words left his mouth, Jisoo knew she was done for. He had finally seen Jisoo for what she really wasâeverything that Jiwoo was not.Â
Out of breaths in her oxygen tank, she was drowning.
ââ
Mark was certain Jisoo was avoiding him.Â
He thought nothing of it initially. She had been quiet during dinner at her house, but Jisoo was always quiet, so that was nothing out of the ordinary to him. The next day during their class together, she had arrived just as class was about to start. She had no choice but to take one of the seats up front, so Mark had no chance to talk to her in class. Perhaps she had been running from her last class? Mark knew Jisoo could be a bit of a grade grubber. He speculated that she was probably trying to negotiate her grade up from a 99 to a 100 with a teacher, and thatâs why she ran a little late.Â
But then it happened again the next day. And the day after that. And after that. And so on. He noticed she wouldnât look his way during class. Then sheâd quickly leave as soon as class let out. Jisoo was also nowhere to be seen during lunch. Nor was she at her locker after school, where Mark would meet with her so they could walk home together.Â
Jisoo didnât answer any of his texts or his calls. Had he not seen her every day during English, Mark would have been really worried that something happened to her.
But it had been a week after the dinner at her place and Mark was still worried because something did happen to her, otherwise she wouldnât have been ignoring him for that long. He felt helpless, he didnât know who to ask about her whereabouts.Â
Jisoo had really opened up to him in the last few months, so why was she closing herself off again?
Mark finally caught her on her walk home. As soon as school finished that day, he had made it a point to race to her block so she would run into him. Jisoo was a good girl, she surely wouldnât be skipping out on class just to go home early so she could avoid him.Â
Jisoo found him leaning against a lamp post near her house. Waiting. She was about to make a run for it when Mark turned and saw her.Â
âJisoo, wait!âÂ
âMark, jus-just leave me alone.â She tried to sound assertive, but sounded like she was trying to convince herself more than Mark instead.Â
He walked up her, eyes boring into her skull, willing her to look at him. âWhy have you been avoiding me?â She stayed silent, averting her eyes in any other direction but his. Mark knew she was trying to figure out a way to make a run for her house. Jisoo knew he was a fast runner and could easily catch her. âDid I do something wrong? Was it something I said at dinner to your parents? To your sister?â Taking her chances, Jisoo attempted to dash past Mark. With cat-like reflexes, he grabbed her arm, spinning her around and holding her in place so she was forced to look at him. âWhatever it was Jisoo, I want to apologize for it properly, but you need to talk to me.â
She had never been so close to him. She found looking Mark in the eye unbearable so she averted her gaze elsewhere. âWhy do you care?â
âWhy do I care?â Disbelief laced heavily in his voice.Â
âYeah, itâs fine, itâs not like my sisterâs going to hate you for not checking on me or anything,â Jisoo said offhandedly, slipping herself out of Markâs grasp. âShe loves all her fans.âÂ
Suddenly it all made sense to Mark.Â
âJisoo, do you really think that lowly of me?âÂ
Whatever resolve Jisoo had built up came crumbling as soon as she heard the hurt in his voice. âMark...â
âI always thought that you were only distant from others because you were so focused on school and people misunderstood you, but you were doing this deliberately, werenât you?â The heartbroken look on Markâs face tore Jisoo to shreds. âJisoo, how could you think I was being like everyone else? Weâre best friends.â
Jisoo could feel herself getting choked up. She felt like a fool. Of course he wouldnât purposely use her like everyone else did, Mark Tuan was the nicest person she had ever encountered. Never did he ask anything of her, except for her time.Â
Which is probably why she had fallen for him, slowly but surely.Â
âIâm sorry,â was all she could say, with her head hanging down.Â
Mark looked at her with a stern expression. âYou know what your problem is? You push people away before they can hurt you. Youâve never let anyone in long enough for them to see how amazing you are.â He reached into his backpack and pulled out a small mustard yellow gift bag. âTalk to me when you like yourself as much as I do.â Without another word, he tossed the bag to Jisoo and left in the direction of his house.
ââ
âDo you...mind if I join you all?â
It was an odd sight to take in. The boys looked to Jaebum for guidance, always yielding group decisions to the unofficial leader.
âSure Jisoo,â Jaebum choked out. The boys hurriedly moved their stuff from the table, shifting themselves to make room for her. Jisoo quietly took a seat directly across from Mark and began digging into her lunch, unaware of the stares she was receiving.Â
âSo Miss Kang...â Jisoo made a funny face at Jacksonâs formality. âWhat brings you here to sit with us?â
âYou guys are always staring at me during lunch, I figured Iâd join you so you wouldnât have to strain your eyes so much,â Jisoo teased, side-eyeing the boys as she ate.
âOh, she bites!â Jackson bellowed. All of the boys, except for Mark, laughed at the usually quiet girlâs uncharacteristic jab.Â
âI was also just thinking about how itâs our last year. Itâs kind of weird how I see all my classmates every day but Iâve never really made the effort to talk to them. So I guess, here I am now.â Jisoo gave them a sheepish smile, as if asking for permission.
âWell youâre more than welcome to sit with us during lunch whenever you want,â Jinyoung invited graciously with one of his signature eye smiles.
She smiled warmly at them. âThank you.âÂ
Mark could only stare silently across the table at Jisoo as she conversed easily with his friends, his eyes fixated on the mustard yellow bow tying up her hair. It had been over a week since he had last spoken to Jisoo. Joining him and his friends at their usual lunch table was the last thing Mark expected her to do. Watching as she blushed and giggled softly at one of Jacksonâs typical flirtatious jokes, he didnât expect her to get along with his friends so well either.
âBetter get going,â Jaebum announced as the bell rang, signaling the end of the lunch period. They all got up to clean up after themselves. âDonât forget about the meeting after school. And Jisoo...â
âYouâll have lunch with us again tomorrow, yeah?â Jackson asked, looking at Jisoo hopefully.
She glanced at Mark who looked back at her with an unreadable expression. âWell...if itâs okay with you guys...â
âOf course it is,â Jinyoung reassured. âAnyone whoâs able to completely debunk Jacksonâs stupid conspiracy theories is all right with us.â
âHey!â
âSure, see you guys tomorrow,â she replied gratefully, waving the three boys off as they headed to class.
âJisoo...â
âIâm sorry, am I overstepping boundaries?â She looked at Mark worriedly. Of course heâs still mad. She silently scolded herself for imposing. âI knew I should have asked you first if it was okay.â
Mark shook his head as he pulled Jisoo aside from the other students leaving the cafeteria. âNo, not that. You always sit at the same table or spend lunch time cleaning lab supplies for Ms. Kim. What are you trying to do here?â
Jisoo sighed as she gazed up at Markâs questioning eyes. There was no point in trying to come up with a lie, Mark had already seen right through her once before. âCan we talk and walk at the same time? I really canât be late to History, we have a quiz.â Mark rolled his eyes before gesturing Jisoo to lead the way to class, a small smile playing on his lips. That was the Jisoo he was used toâalways prompt.
âI missed you.â
Now that was the Jisoo he was not used to.
Mark stopped in his tracks. âAre you sick?â He placed a hand on her forehead. âYour temperature seems fine. Are you really the Kang Jisoo, the one who thinks nagging someone about how much sleep theyâre getting is a sign of affection?â
She removed Markâs hand before continuing to walk. âIt means I care.â
âSo do I.â
âAnd thatâs why I missed you.â Jisoo stopped walking again to look at Mark properly. âMark, you were right. I do tend to push people away because Iâm afraid of getting hurt. Like before. I thought I was going to get hurt again so I pushed you away too.â She gave him a regretful look. âIâm sorry I thought so little of you, Mark. Of course you werenât going to be like everyone else. Youâre my best friend.âÂ
âBut why do you keep pushing people away?â
âIsnât it obvious?â She smiled sadly as she looked down at herself. âIâm not Unnie. Sheâs a beautiful and successful Hallyu star that everyone wants to be or be with. I was always compared to her ever since we were kids, and whenever people talked to me, it was always about herâthey would ask if I could get them tickets to her concert or an autograph or if I could give her a letter and to let them know what she says when she reads it. I was always living in her shadow.â
Now Mark was the one looking apologetic. âThat must have felt awful.â
âThatâs why Iâm so focused on school. I can finally do something that Unnie didnât get a chance to finish. When it comes to my education, I can just be me, not Kang Jiwooâs younger sister.â
They gazed at each other for a moment, letting Jisooâs words sit. Though she had said that he was right, Mark now felt horrible about berating Jisoo before. He suddenly took her hand and started walking hurriedly.Â
âYouâre right, youâre not your sister,â Mark announced undoubtedly. Jisoo didnât have it in her to protest. She could only stare at Markâs grip and let him tug her along. âJisoo, youâre you, perfectly you. Youâre Kang Jisoo, the girl who silently judges my unkempt hair in the morning even though sheâs basically had the same haircut since the fourth grade.â
âHey!â
He gave Jisooâs hand a gentle squeeze as he continued walking, unintentionally causing her stomach to stir. âYouâre everything you should be and nothing less. I wouldnât have it any other way, and neither should you.â
They had arrived right outside of her History class. With her hand still in his, Jisoo scanned Markâs face with uncertainty. âSo weâve confirmed that we are best friends, but still, how could you be so good to me? I feel like Iâve always given you 10 when youâve given me 90.â
âBecause I like you,â Mark replied simply, releasing her hand with a shrug. âAnd donât worry, you donât have to say it because I already know. Otherwise you wouldnât be wearing the bow I got you.âÂ
Jisoo felt her face flush red. âBut Iââ
The bell rang again. âI better run to class before Mr. Jeong gets mad again. Meet you at your locker after school?â Unable to produce a proper sentence, Jisoo nodded dumbly, earning an ecstatic smile from Mark. He quickly pecked her on the cheek before heading off in the opposite direction. âGo be the educated Jisoo that I like, bye!â
She grinned to herself like an idiot as she slid into her seat, Markâs words replaying in her head over and over again. More motivated than ever, Jisoo happily greeted her classmates around her as she got ready for the rest of the period.Â
âBecause I like you.â
Slowly but surely, with the help of a good friend, she was beginning to like herself too.Â
jenn_kang Happy Maison day! Today also marks my 7th debut anniversary. I knew I wanted my next album to be super special since it will be my 7th album. I worked really hard to release this on my debut anniversary and I am extremely happy with how everything came out. Thank you to everyone around me who worked tirelessly to bring this project to life. I am so blessed to have an incredible team by my side. Thank you to all my colleagues and mentors who have put their precious time into me for the past 12 years. I hope you Iâve made you proud. I dedicate this album to my members. Thank you for showing and teaching me love, even when I felt I didn't deserve it. Thank you for being a place for me to call home. I love you.
(I'm sure the news is already out, but I will be going on a world tour this year! Please watch closely for more details (;
