Ren was in the Army for seven years (2005-2012) until he was stationed in Iraq and the vehicle he was in was partially destroyed by an IED. His right arm was burned pretty badly and he was shot once in the hip during the following fire fight. He was given an honourable discharge because of complications with his arm healing and came home with anxiety, PTSD, and a fear of cars. When he got home he picked up a smoking habit and a mild drinking habit. It took him a really long time to get his fear of cars, and he sometimes still starts to panic in vehicles.  It was after that the mistrusting, self centred, cynical side of him started to become more prevalent. He started lying about where he was and what he was doing out of some irrational fear of someone “intercepting” him and being shot at or something again. After a long time spent in therapy he doesn’t lie as often, but still does it compulsively. With the help of his anti-anxieties, therapy, and his sister, he slowly readjusted. But the constant lying and paranoia distanced him from his parents a great deal.

Every time I draw Ras and Sham interacting it further solidifies this idea of their relationship I have where basically "platonic life partners" is the best description I've come up with for it. It's hard to say how accurate it is because goojeeoo and I haven't actually rped them in a long time but how I see their relationship now is a lot like how it was back like three years ago when we first made them (was it three or two?) where Sham is just. Very serious and conscientious, and any humor he has is very dry and despite all of this he's still hanging around Ras and looking out for him (how is it even possible?? They're opposites) and Ras absolutely adores him, he thinks that Sham is just the best and while he irritates him unintentionally a lot, he knows that for some reason Sham is gonna stick around for more of his bullshit (like when he falls down the stairs in the middle of the night trying to be quite about getting snacks and Sham sits up with him grumpily to make sure he doesn't have a concussion, blinking groggily and huddled into a robe. He smacks Ras every time he starts to nod off). Idk how to really describe them exactly how I see them. They're best friends (even though Sham tries to play it like he doesn't actually care) and Ras just tries his hardest to make Sham laugh and apologizes profusely when he realizes he's actually really pissed him off and Sham doesn't go out of his way to reassure Ras they're still friends but does things he's not really aware of that say it all and ahH HhhH I love them and don't know how accurate my characterization of Sham is but DAMN did I try
