dva and 76 but dva is having absolutely zero (0) of 76's shit bc she's a fucking soldier who refuses to take some old vigilante's bullshit
isnāt this canon? do i even need to go off about it? (spoilers: yes i do)
76 means well, really. heās gruff and a little bit of an ass, but he does care about new overwatch.
he tries not to take over, you know? heās well aware of the role he played in the original overwatchās downfall, and he knows he has no place in the recall other than an occasional helping hand. he uses their resources because he has to, not because he deserves to.Ā
heās so used to being listened to though. like itās douchey and he can even recognize it, but nothing gets his blood boiling like being ignored when he /knows/ heās right. he was commander longer than he was a follower, and then he was on his own--- point is, heās used to doing things his way.Ā
heās not too bad. sometimes he gets a little bossy, a little pissy, but he calms down quick enough and generally is decent enough to apologize when he oversteps. he doesnāt go off on his own when they call him in for a co-op, doesnāt disobey what they tell him even if he disagrees---but he does disagree loudlyĀ
d.va doesnāt give much of a shit about what he does at first, because heās not even on her radar. she has more to worry about than his baggage and his complaints.Ā
sheās with overwatch for her country, first and foremost--because her other meka pilots can handle the threat at home, the threat thatās on their turf, but her commanding officers wonāt allocate resources to outside threats. they wonāt send anyone to protect them from talon, or the other rising threats that are so new they donāt have names but are dangerous enough to need to be dealt with asap.Ā
Ā so someone had to go. she and the other pilots had talked about it. on secure channels, when they had free moments. about treason, no matter how they market it, itās for the greater good of south korea but itās treason nonetheless and theyāll all have to treat her as an enemy.
Ā theyāre pilots because they love their country, you understand. theyāre a close bunch, have spent all of their formative years together. and they basically had to decide who was going to betray all of them
hereās the thing: hana volunteered. when she could see the others were hesitant, that even the ones who said that they would looked uncertain and heartbroken, she volunteered. she said,Ā āiāll go.āĀ
and no one else joined her. they had assumed only one would go, but she had a futile hope that one, or two would follow her. they couldāve done it on their own, if they went together.Ā
(she cried, a week after she left with her meka and supplies, in a stolen, unmarked truck, when she received a transmission from an untraceable line that wished her luck and confirmed she had been listed as kill-on-sight.
can you imagine being nineteen and knowing you can never go home? that to save your home, to keep it safe, you had to give it up?)Ā
she /might/ see her sisters some day, if they travel, if they retire and pass their mekas down, if they take a trip and somehow can get in contact with her--but itās a long shot. so sheās not exactly lovey-dovey when she requests to work with overwatch.Ā
she explains her situation to winston and mercy, in as much detail as she can give. sheās stoic, has shown up armed but without her meka (she refuses to let south koreaās tech fall into anyone elseās hands if she can help it, has the self-destruct button on her at all times. sheās still loyal, though her superior officers will never know.)Ā
so what iām getting at: they know, from day one, that d.vaās a soldier first and foremost. they understand that sheās not an overwatch agent--sheās a south korean soldier who is protecting her home by allying with them. they are /not/ her priority. Ā
mercy says, bluntly,Ā āif you donāt prioritize us, we wonāt prioritize you. just to be clear. but we will be certain to keep you informed on whatās relevant to your cause. we are willing to be your allies. you need to communicate with us and tell us what you need, and in return weāll tell you what we need. you cannot use us without question, but we will lend assistance. we expect the same courtesy.āĀ
the first month sheās with them, itās tentative. she isnāt social, she doesnāt talk to them outside of missions. itās deliberate. itās her way of saying,Ā āyouāre all older, you all have more experience, but iām still professional, i will prove myself, and iām a warrior.āĀ
when they start to respect her--when they stop looking at her with sad, pitying eyes and with respect, thatās when she lets go a little bit. when she starts dryly teasing, when she seeks lucio and others out for company.Ā
sheāll always be really, really grateful for fareeha, who respected her from day one. who found her after a rough day, alone and lonely, and listened to her story. who told her that sheās a brave and admirable woman for doing whatās right, what she knew had to be done, even with the steep sacrifices she had to give.
fareeha, who doesnāt baby her, who has never done so. who doesnāt call herĀ āsweetieā or ruffle her hair (and that stuff is.... annoying, but she deals with it from the others once she knows they respect her. they mean it kindly, she knows, so she deals with it as gracefully as she can.)Ā
and then 76 appears and starts hanging around. like i said earlier, heās a little bossy, a little pushy, but thatās not her problem. they end up doing what they have to in the end regardless, so his complaints and issues donāt matter.Ā
then they have their first mission together where itās just the two of them. winston had arranged it (he has weird algorithms that determine who should go on what missions together based on their skill sets, and it works about 87% of the time if athenaās loud analyses are anything to go off of.)Ā
it goes well, except at the end hana has to bail out of her meka for a few minutes because someone attached /something/ to it and she has to quickly get it off manually-- her mekaās perfection incarnate, she knows that, but it isnāt the best for any sort of fine-motions. the arms donāt move delicately enough
she goes as fast and quietly as she can, but of course she gets spotted. if she had both hands, she wouldāve gotten him with one hit, but it takes a few when sheās multitasking, and she takes a few grazes in the process.Ā
she thinks sheās fine to return, butĀ she shrieks, involuntarily, when a shot goes through her thigh as sheās retreating back into her meka, and she notices 76ā²s head shoot towards her position. it takes all of thirty seconds for her to fix it up passably for the rest of the mission until they return to base, and then sheās back in it.Ā
when theyāre heading back, her meka stashed away in an 18 wheeler sheās driving with 76 in the passenger seat, he says,Ā ālet me look at your thigh.āĀ
she doesnāt take her eyes off the road.Ā āitās fine for now. iāll see mercy or lucio when we get back.āĀ
āi have a biotic field left.āĀ
āsave it. those are useful for the field, itād be a waste to use it when the base is fifteen minutes out.āĀ
she hears it click on anyway, and she grits her teeth.Ā
ātheyāre meant to be used.āĀ
āi had already--whatever.ā she sighs irritably.Ā āwhatever.āĀ
sheās limping a little bit when they arrive, and she has to slap 76ā²s hands away at least three times when he tries to take over transporting her meka from the truck to the hangar.Ā
itās whatever. sheās exhausted, even before they debrief with winston and athena and she goes for her post-mission checkup. she passes out on one of the cots in medical the minute mercy clears her, not bothering to change or leave.Ā
she doesnāt notice at first, but 76 starts hanging around the bases more often after that mission. especially when sheās there. he asks after her even when sheās not there (nothing overly creepy, but more than should be happening when they donāt know each other. just general,Ā āhowās the kid doing?ā) and coincidentally requests the same missions, even though before they had only had that one mission together despite months of working in the same organization. Ā
then he starts hanging around her. which is weird on a lot of levels.Ā
it wouldnāt be that bad if he actually /interacted/ you know? but instead heās just sitting and watching, with that visor keeping his face inscrutable. when sheās gaming in one of the rooms, sometimes lucio or lena will watch or ask to play a round with her, and 76 will just be. awkwardly to the side.Ā
heās nice enough, she guesses. he brings food, and heāll clean up after them. the one time she was sick, he brought her crackers and ginger ale and stayed close, which kinda ticked her off but the ginger ale was good to have. heās quick to use his biotic field after missions if heās the first to reach her, when heās tasked with bringing her transport. he sometimes reaches out like he wants to grab her shoulder and squeeze, but her body language must be enough to stop him from doing so.Ā
itās /weird/, really. she canāt see his face, canāt read why he acts the way he does. and he doesnāt even do much.Ā
the next mission they have together---thatās when she gets pissed off.Ā
because it was going fine. it was one of the few missions where hana went without her meka, no one else was available, and while sheās primarily a pilot, she /has/ been trained.Ā
and 76 steps in front of her the entire time. shields her, gives her pointless tasks to do, and she canāt say anything because heās the leader on this and itās time-sensitive. arguing wonāt do shit.Ā
sheās fuming, though, and itās with more than a little bit of righteousness that right before they retreat, she shoves 76 out of the way and headshots an agent that he wouldnāt have been able to stopĀ
he turns and snarls at her, wordlessly, and she snaps,Ā ācry me a fucking river, grandpa, next time iāll let him slit your throat. get back to the van.āĀ
they do. he spends the first ten minutes of the ride screaming at her.Ā
āi told you to stay on my left!āĀ āi told you to be the backup, you werenāt supposed to fire unless i couldnāt!āĀ āi told you--āĀ āi told you!āĀ
she lets him get it all out, and when he looks like heāll start again, she speaks up, icy cold, her eyes locked on the road and her hands tight around the steering wheel.Ā
āi donāt know if pulling this protective-macho bullshit gets you off or what, but it needs to stop.āĀ
a strangled, offended noise leaves his throat, and she continues before he can get all righteous and outraged.Ā
āiāll let this go. this one, single time iāll let it go, old man. the bullshit work, the disrespect, the yelling when i did my job--iāll let it all go,ā she says, almost kindly.Ā āwe can be friends, old man. but i wonāt take this shit anymore. iām not whatever fantasy youāre cooking up in that perverted mind of yours.āĀ
āthatās not--ā he makes a weird noise in his throat.Ā āiām not a pervert.āĀ
āiād rather you be a pervert after my ass than this weird, father-figure BS youāre trying to pull,ā she says bluntly.Ā āthatās much easier to explain than you using me to fill some hole from you feeling dissatisfied with not having kids or starting a family or whatever trauma youāre trying to use me to fix.āĀ
heās very, very quiet after that.Ā
they donāt talk for a bit, and when they get closer to base, hana speaks up again.Ā
āyouāre not a bad guy, 76,ā she says.Ā āi think your heartās in the right place. i know nothing you did was meant badly. i know you think you were just being nice and giving me some TLC that the poor teenager isnāt getting from anywhere else. but think about how your actions looked to me.āĀ
āiām sorry.ā she gives him points for not giving any excuses. Ā
āitās fine. but if youāre going to be nice? be nice to everyone. it might actually make your life less pathetic if you made friends instead of trying to be this āsilent guardian angelā which is just creepy.āĀ
āyou donāt....āĀ
ādonāt what?āĀ
āYou donāt sugar coat anything. do you?āĀ
āthatās not my style, old man.āĀ
(things get better after that. itās clear that hanaās still his favorite to everyone except hana. hana just sees that heās making an effort with everyone else and not being a creeper anymore. heās being involved, even if heās still a man of few words. and heās not just bringing her ginger ale when she gets sick, now thatās his entire Thing whenever anyone gets sick.Ā
itās like the grandma who thinks everything can be fixed with chicken noodle soup. except much less filling.
and maybe they joke around a little bit. 76 and hana have their own, dry humor that doesnāt go over super well with anyone else.Ā
she can be a little meaner with him, when she gets in those types of moods, and he just. takes it. dishes it back without crossing any lines. heās the only one who can really take hanaās anger during those weeks when she gets resentful of her position, her acerbic digs and seemingly endless requests for intense spars. and she apologizes by taking him to whatever cheap diner was closest after their latest mission, getting him crappy coffee and eggs.Ā
she reluctantly admits he seems to understand her homesickness more than most here. theyāre the ones that /canāt/ go back, rather than theyāre choosing not to go back. heās not her dad, or an uncle, or any weird family-figure that she doesnāt want. but heās a good friend, after awhile.Ā
