Are you happy?
r: how do you think the companions [romanced and unromanced] feel about nicknames or unconventional naming conventions as gestures of affection? [Ex. an RT of any background shortening names like "Cass"/"Mar"/"Hein", a naval officer RT assigning call signs or referring to them by their last names when raising a well executed killing blow/stratagem.]
what a fun ask.
shortened names/nicknames/“cutesy” names.
oh, mar just hates it. he has a name, a name his mother picked out, use it, you worthless little-
spitting with rage, ears flattened like a cat, pupils shrunken to thin slits. one of marazhais biggest sort of dislikes(?) is a lack of respect, and i feel like him getting hit with a nickname is pretty disrespectful, to him.
i also think he would loathe all the cutesy fan-nicknames i’ve seen (and many more i’m sure i haven’t seen) marzipan, mars bar, mar, mara, etc. not a fan at all!
solomorne, canonly, has a shortened version of his name as a nickname with “Sol.” though it is only used in two lines, and only once by the rt.
"I'm only yours, Sol. Always have been and always will be."
and he responds to it! so, that’s all good for him. he does have the longest name in game, though, at 9 characters, so it makes sense to shorten it, maybe. i think sol gets a flush of warmth whenever the rt refers to him as that, especially if they’re laughing while saying it.
heinrix, i think, is flummoxed. hein…? that’s, hm, nobody has called him that, ever. i think he’s not against it, but he gets embarrassed if it’s in public so he does chastise the rt little. but if the rt goes Hein? in private, he’ll look over/up with a little Mmm?
kibellah has a few fan nicknames, i think? kibbles/kibs is the one i see most often, but i default to kibibi and i like “bella.” i think she’s also pleased about it, but a tiiiiiiiny bit embarrassed. it's... a little unnerving to be paid so much close personal attention by her domin.
i don’t think pasqal likes nicknames. he probably gets all huffy at the misuse of an approved mechanicus name. the first time he hears pas? he whips around with his mechadendrites all puffed up, and the rt has to hold up their hands in defense.
i think cassia is torn! on one hand, she places a lot of pride and identity with her name and house, of course. but also, well, it’s the first anyone has ever used a nickname for her! it’s so novel and nice, i think she’s torn between being excited about that closeness, and her social standing telling her to admonish the person for calling a lady that.
jae, unfortunately, you can’t shorten her name further. it’s also not even her real name!
same with idira, but that is her real name.
abelard doesn’t shorten nicely.
ulfar doesn't shorten well, either.
argenta… guess you could do ‘genta or sister. but ehhh.
call signs
abelard is… eagle two. oh, thank the emperor.
arbitrator rts are probably the ones i would see assigning call signs as solomorne, our arbitrator, assigns and somewhat frequently uses call signs.
but 40k, due to taking place on entirely different solar systems sometimes + the variety of species and military compositions, has a wide variety of call signs/identifiers.
in the nightlords omnibus, talos is identified by his serial number by a magos which incorporates his legion + chapter + squad.
cadians also use modified specialized language for communication, but cadians are special in their own way, especially when it comes to military jargon.
in dawn of war 2, csm patrols have the call signs of “syrax.” “night stalker” “eviscerator” which is so 2edgy4you (then again, that’s chaos in a nutshell)
but every human in game belongs to a heavily militarized society, so they would adapt + have no unique opinions, imo. every human has had basic to advanced military training, except for 2~ characters.
i think only cassia would struggle due to her inexperience with combat (presumably she’s only done shooting simulations and read up extensively) and maybe idira for lack of “formal” military training.
marazhai, again, hates it. address me, mon-keigh!
last names
frequently used in game for each character, but with their title attached. master van calox, mistress heydari, master anthar, etc.
just on their own… i don’t think anyone really cares except cassia, because she is a highborn lady. you will add Lady to her name when addressing her, as is expected of polite company.
oh, but marazhai probably wants his full laundry list of titles used. annoying…
Well he's leaving now. With supervision of course. But something tells me this will Continue being annoying for an Amount of time.
