Power Droid. In the original Kenner line, this figure was released in its second wave, when you could hardly even speak of release waves yet. I guess it was unexpected to get eight more Star Wars figures after we already got twelve figures with all main characters from that movie that still blew every kid’s mind. The wave had a strange choice of figures with mostly blink-and-miss characters (one, Snaggletooth, was not even in the movie at all but instead could only be seen in the Holiday Special). From that mix of alien cantina creatures and droids, the Power Droid was probably the weirdest figure, as it was only a block with legs. Power Droid is notable in that it was the only Kenner figure ever, which was packed sideways, as the bubble of its packaging otherwise would have been too big. I don’t recall having seen this figure much in stores but at the same time I don’t think it was rare either. The legs made a clicking sound when moved and the “face” was a sticker attached to the front. It also had a rubber knob on top which could be removed. I’d say it wasn’t the most exciting figure but it sure was one of the sturdiest and would easily survive childhood. This latest rendition of the character, released in The Vintage Collection line, does not have much in common with the original figure other than its block shaped body and the fact that it has two legs. The legs are articulated at “hip” and ankle and the top shell of the body can be removed to reveal the droids interior parts. Various bits and pieces are attached to the top shell and can be removed too, but otherwise sit tight enough to not fall off while playing around with this guy. The knob is there too albeit not made of rubber. The radar like eyes are removable too. While the original Kenner figure was just dark blue this figure’s body is painted in a grayish blue with rusty stains and enough weathering to make it look old and used, as it should.
