The Leatherman & The Rubberman
Daniel Gold had always loved Reykjavík Pride.
The music. The color. The sea air drifting in from Faxaflói.
The feeling that for one afternoon the entire city decided joy was more important than whatever worries waited tomorrow.
Crowds packed the streets. Rainbow flags fluttered from balconies and lamp posts. Children sat on their parents' shoulders. Drums echoed between the buildings.
Daniel marched near the front of one of the larger groups. His crimson hair gleamed beneath the Icelandic summer sun.
Leather trousers hugged powerful legs. Heavy black army boots struck the pavement with deliberate confidence. A black leather harness crossed his broad chest. Thick leather bands encircled his biceps. Around his neck hung the small gold chain with its familiar A pendant.
People cheered as he passed. Daniel waved. Smiled. Enjoyed the moment.
Then something felt wrong.
A cold sensation crawled up his spine.
His smile faltered.
For a second the music disappeared, the crowd vanished as the street changed.
He saw himself marching. But not as Daniel. As PDU-016.
The vision lasted less than a heartbeat.
Glossy black rubber stretched across his entire body. Gold lines traced every muscle. Heavy rubber boots struck the pavement in perfect synchronization.
The crowd around him was gone. Instead, endless ranks of identical figures marched beside him. PDUs. Thousands of them.
Step. Step. Step.
The sound echoed like a machine before reality snapped back.
Music returned. Someone handed him a small rainbow flag.
Daniel blinked. "What the hell?" The vision had felt real. Far too real.
He continued walking as the parade advanced through downtown Reykjavík.
A drag performer danced atop a decorated truck.
Someone sprayed bubbles into the air and laughter filled the street.
Daniel tried to focus on the present. Then another flash hit him. Harder.
His foot came down on the asphalt. Except it wasn't asphalt. It was the polished black flooring of a corridor. A corridor he recognized immediately.
The PDU Centre. Conversion Level.
Glossy walls reflected endless versions of himself. PDU-016 walked toward him. Not running. Not threatening. Simply approaching. The figure's movements were perfect controlled, purposeful.
"You are tired." The voice appeared inside Daniel's head. Not heard. Felt.
"You are resisting." Daniel nearly stumbled. The vision vanished. His boots struck Reykjavík pavement once more. A woman nearby asked if he was okay. Daniel forced a smile.
"Yeah." But he wasn't. Because the voice had not disappeared. It lingered, deep inside his mind, waiting, watching.
The parade moved forward as the Hallgrímskirkja tower rose in the distance. Rainbow banners danced in the wind. Daniel focused on breathing.
In. Out. In. Out.
Then another vision erupted.
This time he was no longer seeing PDU-016.
He was becoming him. His leather harness tightened. The sensation shifted. Changed. Morphed. The leather transformed into smooth glossy rubber. His trousers darkened. Shined. Sealed. Heavy rubber gloves crawled over his hands. A black collar locked around his neck.
Daniel gasped. The vision felt physical as though invisible hands were dressing him. Claiming him. Rebuilding him.
"The parade is beautiful," the voice said.
"Order is beautiful too."
Daniel clenched his fists.
"No." A few nearby marchers glanced toward him. They thought he was talking to himself. Maybe he was.
"You remember the calm." The voice sounded closer now.
No uncertainty. No doubt. No conflict. Only purpose.
Daniel's heart pounded. Because part of him remembered. Not memories exactly. More like echoes. Dreams. Fragments. The sensation of belonging to something larger than himself.
The comfort of surrendering responsibility. Of letting a system make every decision. Of becoming part of a collective rhythm.
Step. Step. Step.
The marching cadence returned. For a terrifying moment it synchronized with the parade. Every boot around him struck the ground at exactly the same time. Every marcher became a black silhouette. Every rainbow flag became a black banner edged in gold.
Daniel stopped walking. The illusion shattered instantly. The crowd flowed around him. Music returned. Color and life returned.
He stood motionless in the middle of Reykjavík Pride, breathing hard.
The A pendant rested against his chest. Warm. Real. Human.
A reminder of who he was. Then something else stirred.
Not PDU-016. Fenrir.
The ancient wolf bound to his soul. Daniel felt it like distant thunder. A growl in the depths of his mind. The wolf did not speak. It never needed to. But its presence filled him with fierce independence.
Wildness. Freedom.
The opposite of conformity. The opposite of the Hive.
PDU-016's voice retreated slightly.
"You cannot resist forever."
Fenrir growled again. A deep primordial sound. The voice fell silent.
Daniel exhaled and the pressure inside his head eased. Not gone. Only weakened.
He resumed walking, the parade continued. Children laughed. Music played. Rainbow flags danced in the wind.
Yet every reflective window he passed showed something unsettling. Most reflected Daniel Gold. Leather trousers. Army boots. Harness. Crimson hair. Burning ember eyes.
But occasionally—just for an instant—the reflection showed someone else.
A figure in flawless glossy black rubber. PDU-016.
Marching in perfect step. Waiting patiently behind Daniel's eyes. Waiting for another opportunity. Waiting for a moment of weakness. Waiting to see whether Daniel Gold or PDU-016 would ultimately claim the body they shared.
And as Reykjavík celebrated around him, Daniel understood something chilling. This wasn't a battle that would be won in a single afternoon.
It had only just begun.
