60) “Before you decide to murder me, let me explain…” 

Dick’s head hit the back wall of the safehouse, and he put his hands up before the Glock could whip him in the face. He twisted his arm, grabbing his offender by the arm and twisting, throwing his whole body into the spin as they both landed on the ground. 

“Listen!” Dick hissed, pinning the larger man underneath him, “Hold up a second!” a chin to the knee had him grunting, forcing himself to stay focused as his eyes went fuzzy from the pain. He swore he could taste blood. 

Feeling the other man start to readjust and reach for another gun, Dick stood up and flipped himself over his kitchen counter, reaching for a knife from his cutlery drawer. “Before you decide to murder me, let me explain…”

“No!” A knife flew past Dick’s ear and thudded in the wooden door behind him. “No more! I’m sick of it!”

“Jason, come on!” Dick pleaded, backing away from his brother with his hands up. “It was an accident, it wasn’t that bad!”

Jason pulled a gun from his hip, reaching up to reload it. “Why did you even bring me up?” He ground out through grit teeth, eyes sparkling a little too wetly for being angry. Dick felt guilty. “You know I hate it. You know it never ends well, but you still did it?”

Dick gulped, rubbing the back of his head. “He asked about you. I didn’t want him to walk all over you, even though you weren’t there.” 

Jason stopped walking. “What did he say?”

“He said that you were angry with him, and I mean, you are. But, not why he thought.” Dick knew he was starting to babble, so he took a deep breath and licked his lips. “He said you were never around because you didn’t care about him anymore. I know that’s not true, Jaybird.”

Jason’s eyes were downcast, his hands now by his side. “What did you tell him?” He whispered alothough Dick had a feeling that he already knew.

“I told him you loved him,” Dick said quietly, slowly stepping closer to Jason, work shoes tapping on the floor. Jason had been in his apartment when Dick had gotten home from work, mask on and window broken, curtains waving in the stiff breeze. 

Jason’s hands were shaking, eyes blinking rapidly. “Why?” He asked shakily, breath catching as he gasped. “Why would you say that?”

“Because it’s true,” Dick said, now in front of Jason. He placed his hands on his shoulders, tipping his tear-wet chin up so Dick could meet his eyes. “Isn’t it Jay?”

Jason didn’t need to answer. They already knew the answer. 

When Jason started to shake, silent tears hidden in the dark shuddering through his body, Dick sighed, embracing him in a hug. “C’mon Jaybird.” Dick sighed, walking Jason towards the bedroom. Dick would be fine to sleep on the couch. “You can sleep here tonight. I’ll call Roy and Kori to tell them you’re here.”

Dick made sure Jason was safely tucked into bed with the lights of and his guns on the other end of the room before he silently, slowly closed the door behind him.
