why do people in this community err toward descriptive/constructivist models of gender and openly acknowledge its impossible to strictly define or essentialize what makes a person a âmanâ or a âwomanâ because men and women relate to their identities in an infinite number of ways but simaltaneously also enforce prescriptivist/essentialist models of sexuality (âlesbian only means this, bi only means thatâ) in spite of like a similar variety of experiences attached to those identities too. hypocrisy, mayhaps.

âCompared with the straight feminists, lesbians are doubly marginalized by patriarchy and heterosexism. The radical gesture of Wittigâs claim manifests that the discourses of heterosexuality are so universal and ineluctable that only an earthquake-like rebellion can shake its solid foundation. As Wittig describes, the straight mind develops a totalizing interpretation of history, social reality, culture and all the other subjective phenomenon, which weaves an interlocking network of the âsymbolic orderâ through language (âThe Straight Mindâ, 23). These discourses engender, interpenetrate into, and reinforce one another, leading to the impossibility for lesbians and gay men to communicate in the heterosexual society âunless they speak in their (heterosexual) termsâ (Wittig, âThe Straight Mindâ, 25). With the stigma of abnormality and aberration, lesbians fall into the objects of psychoanalysis, being treated as pathological cases and differentiated from âthe normalâ.â

the way how a misogynistic (racist, homophobic, etc) system works is that EVERYONE living in it is, to some extent, misogynistic (or racist, homophobic, etc), including those that are affected by those systems of bigotry. and everyone on some level is susceptible to internalizing misogynistic etc ideas, itâs just that those primarily affected by them are going to have more incentive to try and unlearn and dissect and challenge those ideas than those that are not.
Iâm saying this as a woman assigned female at birth who has struggled with a lot of internalized misogyny and has, knowingly and unknowingly, probably perpetuated that misogyny against other women. Iâm also saying this as a brown person with internalized racism, who knows other brown ppl with internalized racism, and knows the ways we can perpetuate that racism against each other.
Iâm not a huge fan of the idea that âmenâ (of whom they include trans women/transfems, a group that is certainly affected by misogyny & has as much incentive as afabs to unlearn misogyny bc of both their queerness & their womanhood/transfemininity) are the only ones that are âall misogynistic to some degreeâ because it is not helpful, and because weâre all undeniably misogynistic to some degree. (Cis) men are exempt from experiencing misogyny, and so therefore they tend to have less incentive to unlearn misogynistic ideas, but to characterize misogyny as something exclusive to men and not something that can also be harboured and internalized and perpetuated by women to the harm of other women is wrong. Itâs a form of unhelpful and false essentialism that misses on reminding women that they also play a role in the systems that oppress them and that they must take an active role in unlearning misogyny, that being a (cis) woman isnât a qualifier for ânot being misogynisticâ.
