2018 in Review (Part Three)

I can’t believe this year is almost over. While there’s been many challenges in 2018, it has also been a rewarding year and I am simply grateful that I can keep doing my art. Here’s a recap of all that went down from September to December.

#Glitchbooth at Fu:bar 2018 and Blue \x80  \\\ this fall I got the chance to take #Glitchbooth to Zagreb and Paris to run the installation for the glitch art fam. This was the first time Boo and I went to Europe and for me, it was the first time I left the United States since becoming undocumented 18 years ago. I realized that the decade of undocumentedness and my experience with DACA has left scars and traumas that became apparent during these 3 weeks abroad. On top of that, the process of reentering the States was so nerve wracking. It’s staggering how unwelcoming the US is for anyone legally visiting from foreign countries, especially when compared to Europe. Regardless, the experience of showing at Fu:bar and Blue \x80 with so many glitch artists that I’ve been online friends with for years was so priceless and special <3 I can’t wait to do it again. The first #glitchbooth image is of the group at Fu:bar, the second is me and Kaspar Ravel dancing during Blue \x80.

magic  /// ROM Corruption of the Super Famicom game: Ghost Sweeper Mikami. I spent some time this fall playing Famicom games that weren’t released in the U.S. It is interesting how much easier it is to find female video game protagonists in Famicom games compared to SNES titles. It’s important to consider the degree of sexism involved in marketing and developing video games for American kids.
