✦so why my blog is like this
on the nostalgia loop, and what it's actually asking for
lofi playlists with rain sounds. y2k flip phones and low-rise everything, back in stores. vaporware's dead malls and roman busts in neon gradient. retrowave synths built to sound like a vhs tape that was never actually made. 90s grunge, 00s indie sleaze, "corecore" edits stitching all of it together into one long ache. and underneath all of it, the same phrase, everywhere: i just want a slow life.
it's tempting to read this as pure escapism — people too online, retreating into aesthetics because the present is loud and the future is worse. i think that's half right and mostly incomplete. han's point in the burnout society is useful here: late capitalism doesn't just exhaust you through work, it exhausts you through the demand to constantly optimize, perform, and produce yourself as a brand. nostalgia aesthetics aren't just "the past looked nicer." they're a rejection of a specific kind of pressure — the always-on, self-quantifying, notification-driven present — dressed up as a mood board instead of a manifesto.
what's interesting is that none of these eras being romanticized were actually slow. the 90s had dial-up rage and cable news anxiety. the 00s had post-9/11 dread baked into every teen movie. y2k itself was named after a disaster that didn't happen — apocalypse anxiety repackaged as a fashion decade. so the nostalgia isn't really for those decades' actual pace of life. it's for a specific missing ingredient: those eras had boredom. dead air. a landline you could just not answer. an internet you had to dial into and then leave. the nostalgia is less "bring back 2003" and more "bring back the absence of infinite scroll," and 2003 is just the last visual language available before that absence disappeared.
vaporware makes this most explicit, i think — it's nostalgic for a past that was never real to begin with. roman statues and windows 95 aesthetics were never actually adjacent to each other; the genre invents a memory rather than recovering one. which tells you the target was never historical accuracy. it's a mood being reverse-engineered: "slow, analog, a little empty in a way that felt safe" — and any aesthetic vocabulary that gestures at that feeling gets recruited, real timeline or not.
the "slow life" language running under all of it is the same desire stated plainly instead of through synth pads. cottagecore, cozy vlogs, the whole "returning to simplicity" genre — it's debord's spectacle again, actually: even the critique of speed gets sold back as content, a slow-living aesthetic you can consume at the same compulsive pace as everything else. you can doomscroll your way through videos about not doomscrolling. the form doesn't change just because the content is calm.
which is maybe the actual tension worth sitting with: the desire underneath all this — for boredom, for unoptimized time, for a landline you don't have to answer — is completely legitimate. but performing that desire through more content, more aesthetic, more curated nostalgia, doesn't get you the thing itself. it gets you a very well-lit picture of the thing.
and i know this, and i still slide into it anyway. i can name the spectacle precisely, debord and all, and still put on a lofi playlist because i want the specific feeling of it — not the critique, the feeling. knowing the mechanism doesn't disarm the pull. that's not hypocrisy, i don't think. it's just that naming a thing correctly and wanting it are two separate operations, and only one of them is under your control. the slow life isn't retrievable through vaporware or lofi girl studying at 2am. it's retrievable by actually closing the tab. i know that. i still open the tab.
The Best World Game.
