So much to do , so little I can say . Expected to do so much with so little . So little time , so little energy . Understanding a teen is simple school+homework+social life= no sleep and no sleep = dysfunctional human being and dysfunction human being = … what society deems as a disappointment .
Behind the Curtain:#1
This is a new series that delves behind what really happens in college, especially for pre-meds. I am going to show you readers what is really behind the mirage of pre-med life.
Disclaimer: I am not saying everyone goes through this. It is just what I experienced and what I have seen people experienced or what they have told me.
College is suppsed to be magical. For a pre-med, you are expected to achieve greatly and without fail, to love science and math like it is your own flesh and blood. You are supposed to be a lo of things, but I am going to let you know something: I am calling bs on everything. Starting with this first one:
Myth:You are supposed to freaking breathe math and science.
Reality: There are going to be times you are going to hate those subjects.
I like math and science, I really do. But it’s hard. It’s like a child actually. You love them, but there are times you don’t like them. Harsh, but the truth. It really gets on my nerves when people say, “ Oh, you’re pre-med? Then you can answer this ridiculously long ass proof that even Einstein had difficulties right? Because you must be a genius!”
NO NO NO omg that doesn’t... what the actual fuck. Pre-meds are humans too okay? Everyone repeat after me. We don’t get things the first time too, we stumble and fall, we make stupid mistakes, we get hurt, and most importantly WE DO NOT HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS. So to the professors/TAs who like to keep stereotyping every freaking pre-med student, do you understand how much pressure you put on your students? I know, it’s your job to challenge us, but its like they say: if you judge a student by how well they are able to answer a math problem in under 3 seconds, we’re going to grow up thinking were incapable. And that sucks.
Math and science is complicated and beautiful. It is intricate and demanding; one of the biggest, most compelling puzzle I have ever encountered in my life. However, sometimes I need help breaking it down. And we are so scared to ask for help because these are OUR subjects, our specialties. Things people told us we were supposed to be good at. Pre-med, is exactly what it sounds, it is pre-medicine, pre-before we have everything “figured out” (I know all the med students are going to fight me on this one, but...), pre-before we find the answers. People forget that young, really young, adults are placing this title on themselves. And yeah we knew about its crushing obligations but that doesn’t mean we don’t need help here and then.
So, please, give us a freaking break already with the math and science shit ok? Reality is we are figuring it just like everyone else is.
